Just thought that I'd turn you folks onto an experience that I had today while going to sell a washer and dryer at the second hand store. (Yes, pawn shop)

I was walking around waiting for a clerk when I stumbled on a whole pile of grow lights. They had the Diamond brand, a couple PL's and a few sun systems. 400w and 600w lamps with ballast and bulb for $75. 1000w was $85usd Just couldn't beat it. I played really really stupid and I told the guy it would work great in my grease pit in the garage for working under the car. He said that he couldn't agree more.

Moral of the story... When you stumble upon grow lights in a pawn shop, you'll probably get a GREAT price. But when you turn around and find a 4x4 hydro table with stand and reservoir with all the fixin's for $144usd, you realize that the pawn shop isn't such a bad place after all. Killer setup for under $300. Check 'em out!!! :woohoo:

Just wanted to let the folks who overlook that as an option in on the thought for when they're looking to buy some new stuff. I just about shit. I'd hate to be the guy who sold it to them. Anything you sell to a pawn shop around here get's logged with the police dept. He asked me my name so I gave him an old adversary's name. That was all he asked for. Took my washer and dryer elsewhere!

Yes, I highly doubt anyone at a pawn shop is too concerned what you use their merchandise for. That's pretty good idea though, I never thought about that before. Sadly I think the last pawn shop around here went under years ago.

Yep, pawn shops are great spots for finding deals. I got the A/C for my grow for $50. And tools for SUPER cheap.

No grow lights though :)

Wow, what a screaming bargain!

I've bought a few lights and other accessories second-hand on craigslist (www.craigslist.org). Didn't get as great a deal as you did, but that equipment served me well and it held its value, too: I was able to re-sell all of it for the same prices I paid, and, in one case, made a nice profit. Buying used gear is the way to go for those on a budget.

There are many on line aquarium interest forums They all have buy & sell threads. Folks offer previously owned pumps, lighting equipment, chillers ,controllers water testers etc.

Believe it or not, I haven't had a single problem with anyone on craigslist, either buying from or selling to. It's been good to me.

I knew this trust fund kid out in AZ who put an ad on craigslist for girls looking to get into porn. Real salesman this little punk is. Him and his buddies banged a few broads until they started to catch on. He had a whole phone system setup and everything. If you were one of those girls, you probably thought you were getting a real "Pro".

Good for shits and giggle though.

Now, to get to work on the next project... Hmmmm....

All my pawn shop ever has is breadmakers, Sega Genesis units without adapters, hair dryers and random power cords.

Although they DO seem to carry aquarium heaters and aquarium air pumps. Sure, they were manufactured around 1950, 1960.. but they still work. The heaters go GREAT with a seperate mycological hobby I once had. The air pumps will be great for the DWC res(s) I plan to set up. I just wish they carried air pumps with the large output tubes versus the small ones that seem to be standard.
