MOLASSES...Types & Sugar Content (fyi)

the only way molasses "sweetens" the smoke is because it breaks down all the organic nutes in the soil and makes it more easily available for the plants, since organics is suppose to make your smoke taste better, obviously with the chelating properties of the molasses it's able to break the soil down and give the plants more of what it needs helping to increase growth, looks, and taste. the molasses is not being directly absorbed by the roots to make it "sweeter" it's what the molasses does to the soil and then what the soil does to the plant to make it "sweeter" because of the added benefits......thats my understanding anyway and sounds reasonable enough for me, otherwise you could just add cherry koolaid and have your plants taste like cherry lol.

so when u use molasses with your normal nutes or guano's not only does it add all the benefits and extra trace minerals it also helps break down them normal nutes so the plants can use it quicker which probably adds flavor.

the main factor for using it is it's cheap and basically it's the main ingredient in alot of expensive nutes "and most of them claim there products increase yield, vigor and flavor"
so instead of paying $15-$20 for a little bottle of a product that's basically molasses you can go get gallons for the same price and add it to your normal feeding.

the chart i seen had molasses listed 1bls per gallon is 3-1-5, thats alot of potassium and an ingredient thats low in alot of normal nutes you buy.....seems to me like you can't go wrong using molasses?

This is the same conclusion I came up with, however there are at least several products which claim that the sugard directly affect sweetness and flavour in the buds. One of those is "Sweat Leaf" from advanced nutrients. Now I would normally say these guys know what they are doing. I mean they have PHDs and some very qualified people formulating these things, and I think its possible that there is some mechanism (direct or indirect), there must be more to it, thats what I am trying to understand.

I have written a couple of e-mails to plant science and biology organisations, so I will see if they reply with anything interesting.

It sounds kind of elementary and naive but adding sweeteners and sugars actually does imrove the sweetness of the bud. I added them mid-late flowering and not during the flush, that seemed to work best. Adding them during flush is sort of a waste imo, because the plant won't have much time to process them...if u wan't it to effect the flavor give it when the plant is growing it's hardest (mid flo) and give it time to process. Maple syrup is also great, I added MS or Molasses at 5 ml/gallon. I don't know anything about using it (molasses) to improve a bacterial colony or using it as a chelate but it worked great regardless. This was in the early days when I did alot more experimenting with random organic nute additives...in pro-mix by the way.

Great info on the varieties of Molasses.

I got one reply from some institute for plant biology. they said sorry we dont have any knowledge on this topic, I asked them to please refer me to somebody who can help. they replied with sorry we cant help you. I was a bit pissed off!

I am sending an e-mail to Advanced Nutrients now, so we will see...

so whats the opinion on flushing then? do you want to quit giving molasses during your flush? or like some people think they actually soak the molasses up through the roots and get more sweet so you'd want to use it right up to harvest.

I know the thread author is a coco nut (far as I know)...so I'll assume the stuff can be used in coco
I'm ditching Sweet and getting some unsulfured molasses somewhere....
Not one post referenced sourcing any of the brands thrown out
Is it found in those high class, liberal, arrogant, snob organic grocery stores?
Or is this shit at Safeway?

Got mine at a Wal-Mart super center. It's unsulphered & it was $1.97 for a bottle. If ya need the namebrand, PM me & I'll get in for ya. I haven't used it yet tho....just starting my 2nd real grow.

So, molasses + water is the only thing I need to use for feeding/waterings? OR should I use other "stuff" in addition to the molasses & water?

High all. Good reading.
I mix it with nutrients. I use PBP - Growth, FF Tiger Bloom - Flower. I also use Superthrive for the young ones.
I have been using the Brer Rabbit Mollasses for about a month now. What I have noticed is lusher and greener growth.

great read my question is why not just use sucanat?does molasses have more nutrients available to the plant than raw sugar cane?sucanat dissolve better in water i would believe?i'm curious i have no experiene with molasses which is better?i have been using sucanat

I just picked some up today to start feeding my indoor plants. I am using the same nutes as you Whizzard and was wondering how much mollassess you feed per gallon along with your other nutrients? Im in my 3rd week of flowering and going to start using it in the next week.

Brer Rabbit blackstrap mollases in most food stores (mine is price chopper) its with the syrups around the syrup, pancake stuff. About 2.00 a bottle.

I used this the other day and by the next day there were crystals all over the following day when I turned the lights on. Could be the timing of the plants cycle bringing out the crystals but I seen a huge increase in crystals and smell of the plant and used that 1 tsp per gallon.

Hello everybody, been a long time since I stopped by here...

I seen the topic and figured as a blackstrap molasses user for 3 years, grower for almost 5 years, I have found that it does make the bud sweeter, as for exactly how I think that has already been explained here better than I could explain it, the Molasses link in my signature by 3LB is great to read to get to know more about molasses..

I have used 1 tsp. per gallon every other watering to vegg & flowering plants, I also feed nutes every other feeding, but since I use the molasses I have been able to reduce my nute strength just a little, I would post my nute regimen, but I grow 6 diff strains right now, and I have started to just add a little of this, and a little of that here and there..
Diff strains call for diff nute strengths..
Once you learn your plants you know just what to add & when..

I will post what I use for my soil mix (vegg & flowering)
I use Experts Professional Potting Mix from Walmart, it has very little bark in it opposed to Miracle Grow Organic, and really requires little additives.. (just a little added perlite)

It already has enough dolomitic lime in it, but I add about 1/2 a cup per cubic foot of soil, I add worm castings (1/2 cup per cubic foot of soil) I like halving, lol
I add 1/2 cup of powdered seaweed extract, and I am currently out of it, but I did add 1/2 to 1 cup of JBG (Jamaican Bat Guano, although I think now I would use the Indonesian Bat Guano for the added P, it is the highest P based Guano.. I already get enough N so the Indonesian would work better since it has less)

When I need added P in flowering I have found adding liquid bone meal & liquid seaweed extract work well along with the 1 tsp. of molasses every other watering (which would make every other watering technically a feeding)
Liquid bone meal is a good source of P (0-12-0)
I forget the seaweed extracts NPK right now, but I use Maxicrop's brand...

I won;t say just how much I use because how much per gal (in bubbled teas) you use would vary to how big your plants are, whether they are light, medium, or heavy feeders...
And if you use a mix in your soil like I do then in a week or two, or however long the nutes take to break down, turn to chemical form to be used, etc.. be careful not to mix too strong of a tea because they start to get those nutes once they start vegging good..

Ok, so I am high and having a little trouble explaining things well
But hopefully what I am trying to say can be deciphered by another stoner as high as me, lol

I am no organic expert, but learning day by day, as I have for the past 5 years...

Happy growing everybody!!!
