Good day fellow Minions.
So I have this big pile of old (used) soil, leaves grass clippings and stuff on my compost pile and have started moving the process forward to repurpose and reamend the soil. Learned the hard way that FFOF contained aphids and fungus nats and had thrips from dirty clones so it is necessary to sterilize the soil of these pests first before I reuse it and reamend it. Plus having it sit outside all fall and winter long and now spring all kinds of nasties could have invaded the stock pile of compost.
Old soil consisted of light warrior, coco, FFOF, bat guano, bone meal, blood meal ect because I do a hot soil (subcools super soil) and coco/ light warrior mix as a cool soil for regular planting of clones and seedlings. After use it was dumped into a compost pile to winter over and hopefully rid the garden area of the pests.
Goal 1 is to avoid pests at all costs.
Goal 2 is to reuse and reamend the soil for future use.
Goal 3 is to not have to purchase new soil for the next few years.
So here we are, the pile of dirt.
Second is the 2 pans at a time (8 total) used to rotate the soil into the grill for 20 minutes at about 180 -200 degrees for 20 minutes to steam the critters out and their eggs. Figured I spent at least 800-1000 to kill bugs over the last year as my learning curve. Spent at least 2000 or so on soil and the parts that make it up over the last 14 months. Hoping to save a bundle doing this method to prevent bugs and save from buying new soil.
at 400 degrees it takes the grill 25 minutes to heat the soil to 200 degrees or so and then I open the lid and keep it at 200 for 20 minutes.
When finished the soil mixture looks great and is ready to be used as the cool soil.
I will also take the normal 30 gallon trashcan and mix together the hot soil to cook for 30 days or more as the 1/3 mix for the repot to 7 gallon bags for the flower cycle. Believe this cool and hot soil mixture allows the roots to find the nutrients when they need it most. Will post up the worm bin for the castings in the next post. Comments welcome. Hope that helps.
