the number of ignorant people astound me.

They can't help it. I'd say that 90% of all people believe what you tell them, if you bring it across believable enough, and underlaying any info with "danger" always makes it more believable, or urgent to believe. Humans are quite simple at large, they believe what they want, which after a certain time turns it into reality for them.
