Micro V-Scrog Cab

Construction has begun!

Construction has begun!

So I went to Home Depot yesterday and got the first round of supplies for the cabinet. I found an awesome doweling kit so I can put the entire cab together with pegs. But, it only works on wood 5/8" think or greater, so I had to modify my plan on the fly, and it is made of 3/4" high-grade hardwood ply. It cost about $50 for the full 4'x8' sheet, but it's such a pleasure to work with that it's totally worth it.

The doweling kit has a guide that allows me to drill holes perfectly so the dowels will fit right. Here are some photos:
(Sorry the photos are sideways. The next set will be right)

So once I had all the pieces cut and the dowels drilled and placed, it was time for a dry fit, and... it all fits!

At this point, the batteries in my drill and circular saw died, so it's time to recharge, and post while I wait.

I'm still waiting for the fan and filter to be delivered, but the next things to do are to paint, mount the shelf for the plant and the intake baffles, and mount the shelf for the fan and filter.

Stay tuned for the next installment! (tomorrow?)

Looks awesome dude! I can't wait to see it in full swing. What are the dimensions? It looks a lot like the one I built;) I used 1/2" plywood and pre-drilled holes for the 1 1/4" screws.Keep me updated holmes! How do you post a thread? All I can do is put my stuff on other threads. Hmmm... I'd like to start my own in the vertical section, but I think the proxy I use limits what I can do. Is a proxy really necessary for security on here? My biggest concern is security. Do you know of a good proxy that doesn't limit your options? Good luck buddy, and safe growing!

Progress Update

Progress Update

Hi, so progress is slower than usual (which seems to be my M.O. these days)

Here's where we are with the cabinet though. The fan and filter arrived, and I modified the plan a bit, but it can easily be changed back to the original idea if this doesn't work. Okay, here are some photos:

In this one, you can see the front of the cab with the intake slot cut out (there are identical slots cut on the sides as well, for a total of 50 sq in. of intake)

This is the back with the door on.

This is the back view with the door off. Still need to add the light and do a bit more painting.

Here's a detail shot of the sliding tray and intake baffles:

So that's it for now, more to come at my own damn pace!

Hi OrgAeroMan,
Starting your own thread is easy, there should be a button on the top left that says "new thread" when you're in the forum window. Does that make sense? Also, I don't use a proxy, just other people's WiFi for sites like this. I also make sure to strip any EXIF data from pictures I upload.

very nice work man, i can't wait to see your finished
cabinet.

btw, could you maybe take a couple pics of that doweling
kit you bought? i could really have used something like that
when i built my clone factory, lol, as i did something similar
with the floor for additional strength, i just had to do it all
by eye.

anyway, sorry i've not been by lately, my wifi is sometimes
very unreliable so i am occasionally out of touch for days
at a time.

Hey SOG, great to hear from you again. The doweling kit is called the General E-Z Pro Doweling Jig Kit and I got it in the tool section at Home Depot for about $30. Totally worth it, as the dowels fit perfectly.

Here's a photo:

If for some reason the picture isn't coming up like it should, you can also find it by googling "general tools 841"

Hope this helps!

That's great for doing it by eye, I can never get the holes perfectly vertical that way, but the kit has a sleeve that holds the bit up and down, it's perfect! Makes it so much easier. Everyone who wants to make a cab that is easily disassembled should get one.

lol, believe me man, mine is NOT perfect, just 'good
enough' for stoner work, lol.

for real, the minute you mentioned the tool i knew i
wanted one as i am itching to build a cab from scratch
rather than modding an existing box.

anyway, like i said, i can't wait to see your finished cab,
it looks to be shaping up to be very nice!

looks like you have a nice build going on...did you get your whisperfan yet? I run a 120(?) cfm one and I am very happy with it...first time I plugged it in I was like wtf?! is it working? is there a switch i have to turn?...then I put my hand in front and felt the rush of air and heard the airflow! Then I showed my gf, she thought it wasn't working too lol..
I plan on getting the 80 cfm one to cool a 400w cmh ... with filter. I think it can do it, those fans are amazing. Also I'm not sure if you know but the whispers have a built in ...umm...well the fan will "gear up" automatically if airflow is restricted too much on either intake or exhaust, so any type of fan controller wouldn't work..didn't see you mention anything about a controller..just a fyi.

Order any seeds yet? I'd recommend something simple and kinda "oldschool" like the c99 mentioned or maybe a whitewidow or superskunk...these older lines are much more likely to have the stable uniformed genetics you're looking for and they're a little cheaper usually. Also easier to grow..so the first seeds you order won't be any kind of disappointment ;)

..enjoying the build :lurk:

Hi StealthDragon, welcome to the show!

The whisperfan is installed, actually, but I took it out of its housing, so it's about 5" tall instead of 7.75". I also have a 150CFM whisperfan in my main cabinet cooling 2 150w HPS and 1 100w CMH. I'm not sure I'd trust my 80CFM to cool 400w though, but the 150CFM 6" fan works wonders and almost as quiet as the 80CFM because of its increased duct size.

I actually got my seeds in the mail a while ago, Joey Weed's C99 and Blueberry. I think I'll grow those out in the main cab and do a cut of Super Silver Romulan in the small cab. It stretched about 2" last time I ran it, so it should work pretty well for filling in the screen in this box.

Thanks again for stopping by, stay tuned!

Sorry I disappeared for a while there, moved to a new place and didn't have internet for a while. Didn't want to go on a weed growing site from work either. It turns out that my new place has a closet that is way too deep on one side (perfect for a hidden door!), so I've decided to sell the micro cab in a bit, after I finish the new room. There will be a test of this box, just not for a bit. Sorry!

Hi anyone who is still following this old thread!
Just as an FYI, I did test with this box and a few different lighting options, and found that with a 100W CMH, the temps were 1-2 degrees above ambient, and with a 150 HPS they were 2-3 above ambient. So, all in all, the box works! And I'll end up selling it for a few hundred bucks to a friend who is not so handy with tools. So, win-win as I continue to build my new closet. Thanks for watching, and I'm interested to see other people who try similar things!

high man, good to hear things going so well for you, i actually had to do it the other way around going from a nice sized closet into a small cabinet and also because of a move, lol.

anyway, how about some pics of the new closet set-up and some of your plants, you've never posted any bud-porn man! ...lol

peace, and stay safe, SOG

(btw, you don't see me on much 'cause my internet access is through wifi only so intermittent at best)

Yeah, I'm still around, but work has been hectic and the new closet construction has been slow, to say the least. I just ordered a Lumigrow ES 165, 12 smartpots, a blumat system, and 12 auto-flowering seeds (6 Onyx and 6 Himalaya Blue Diesel) to do a seed run so I can grow outdoors in the summer. I should be on a bit more frequently now that work has settled a bit.

And SOG- I don't really like to put pictures of actual plants online, seems a little risky to document the actual illegal part of this hobby. Suffice to say, my ladies look nice (but not perfect usually) and do their job as well as I could ask.

Oh WOW! how plans change!! Please let us know how the Lumigrow turns out. I had a list of advice for you but the LED changes everything. Good Luck.

Peace.

Yes, plans change quickly around here. And I figured I'm saving myself $400 an ounce not buying weed anymore, so dropping $550 on a lamp that will last 5 years is not a huge deal. The reason I'm doing some auto seeds is so I'll be able to grow outdoors this summer, as I'm away from home in the city for (coincidentally) 10-11 weeks in the countryside every summer. Things should all be delivered in about a week-ish, which should give me time to finish the second chamber of my closet. (It's 9.5 feet tall, and while I was tempted to grow the world's largest indoor plants, I decided that 2 chambers will be better in the long run.

high man, good to see you and hope you have a terrific 2011!

anyway, i understand your concerns regarding posting pics but, unless the man has a reason to be looking at you, it is EXTREMELY unlikely your pics would ever be used against you, just be careful and strip all data from your pics, especially GPS data if you use a phone cam.

btw, have you considered exploring the Coloidal Silver method of femminizing seeds? ...if you did that then you would have all female seeds to put outdoors.

do a search for 'Phenomenal', he has a thread on the technique that has been going strong now for over 2 years and he is still active in the thread to answer questions.

anyway, good luck in the new year bro, may all your endeavors end in success!

peace, SOG
