Micro Muffler **DIY**

Cozy Amnesia

Did you say it's as quiet as a PC but in your other thread did you say it's the same as a game running in an XBox 360?
Well...there are different PC cases out there, mine is truly near silent...but a 360 is a 360. I doubt I'd like laying next to a 360 to sleep either. You may well have addressed the air sound...but what about mechanical sound? Most of an XBox360's sound is mechanical btw, so if it sounds the same....

Yeah your right, some PCs are near silent (like the laptop I'm typing on right now) and some are loud as shit (like a desktop Mac, lol). Its closer to the desktop mac...

The muffler has eliminated almost all of the noise caused my air movement, almost all but I can still here it a little bit. Then there is mechanical noise, which is mostly contained inside the cab, but a little does escape.

Although the noise of the fan has been reduced maybe 90%, that 10% is still as loud as a noisy PC. Any other noise in the rum will easily drown it out, like a refrigerator running or the A/C or whatever, but if everything is silent then it can be heard easily.

I'm wondering if adding a scrubber to the intake of the fan, which will increase static pressure and no doubt make the fan motor whine a little more, will make it quieter because the sound of the air entering the fan will be muffled a little...

nice work cozy. I have that same fan and love it. I have been thinking about making a muffler and carbon filter, and this has given me some nice ideas to work with. Adding a carbon filter may help cut down even more on noise once you hook that up.

Very innovative Cozy, I like it.

after looking over that website that sells all kinds of fans and such, I have just about settled on the smallest S & P inline for my armoire grow. I notice they also sell silencers. Do you think a 4 inch S&P inline used in conjunction with a 4 inch silencer would work as well as your home made micro muffler? Here is a link to what I'm talking about: http://www.hvacquick.com/frfnconfig.php?fm=ld
I have emailed the company, asking if those silencers were designed to use with that kind of fan. I was just wondering if there was any reason you didn't just go that route besides the price... looks like the smallest silencer would run you 76 bucks.

Thanks for the advice AlphaCat,

As soon as I read that I went to the Whisperline thread in the equipment forum and read the whole thing. I decided to get the lowest level whisper ceiling fan as described by the original poster. So now I got a seed in germ and this fan on the way and now I gotta figure out how I'm gonna rig it up in my cab. Check out my thread entitled "Beginning of Armoire grow" and you will see what I'm working with. I would love any advice you could give me in that thread about how I should position this thing in my Cab. :bandit:

This is a great thread that has helped me figure out how to fix the fan noise in my cabinet. Some have expressed concern with putting fiberglass into the airstream which is a valid concern, although the mesh liner helps I think. I'm sorta in the construction industry and know there is a product for sound deadening in ductwork. It's more of a semi-rigid product than regular fiberglass and some varieties can be used for lining round ducts. It's designed to be in the airstream without degrading or shedding fiberglass and is fire resistant. Here's a link to a product but there are lots of different manufacturers with different products.

It's available wherever fine commercial ductwork products are sold. Look under HVAC supplies, tell them the return grille plenum in your furnace is noisy and you want to buy some acoustical duct liner.
