I got about 100 seeds from my (blue cheese x amnesia) x Mi5 cross. if i grow 20 and select the best male and female and inbreed them is it the offspring from this first inbreeding that il start to see the auto flowering trait?

just bumping this question up before it gets lost....

dargo -aloneinthewoods have you got any photos of your onyx?

i hope you dont mind me posting them here :) i dont have any finnished pics only the one im running now as you can see it started very indica looking like your mi5 seedlings the first leafs behing allmost round in shape its next to a 2ltr bottle repotted into a 20 ltr pot a day or two ago ...

enjoy

First of all a word of warning as this may be an oversimplification. Whether or not a plant autoflowers might not just be about a single gene as unexpected behavior has been documented when people have crossed autoflowering plants with "early" strains and hemp strains. Also I'm not an expert on the subject so please someone correct me where I'm wrong.

Anyway..

Like most plants and animals cannabis is a diploid which means it has paired chromosomes. One chromosome from each parent.

Autoflowering is controlled by a recessive allele. What this means is that in order for the trait (autoflowering) to become "active" in the offspring, both parents need to have passed it on.

The cross you plan to grow is between an autoflowering plant and a non-autoflowering plant. Because we know autoflowering is controlled by a recessive allele we can deduct that the plant is a so called homozygote, which means that both chromosomes are the same. Let's call them "aa".

From the non-autoflowering part of the cross we can't really know if it was a homozygote for not autoflowering or a normal/af heterozygote. For the sake of simplicity lets assume that it's also a homozygote, just with non-autoflowering and dominant chromosomes ("AA").

Let's do the cross... as both parents provide one chromosome all resulting offspring will be of the type "aA". This is a heterozygous cross which results in the dominant allele being visible (i.e. the plant does not autoflower).

Then we get to the f2 generation. Essentially we are doing an "aA" x "aA" cross. The possible outcomes are: "aa", "aA", "Aa", and "AA". All are equally likely but as "aA" and "Aa" are essentially the same thing we could say that 50% are "aA".

So from the generatiom 25% of offspring will be of the "aa" (homozygous recessive) type and will autoflower. 50% of the "aA" type (heterozygous) and won't autoflower but might still be interesting for an af-breeder or whatever. 25% will be "AA" and won't autoflower no matter how much you inbreed them.

If you just want "lotsa autos fast" instead of taking your cross to the f2 generation you could also just cross your cross with an auto. Then you'd be doing a "aA" x "aa" cross and you'd get 75% af / 25% non-af instead of the other way around.

i have never seen this before interesting two seeds per calyx does she seem to be putting on more size on each calyx than her siblings ? could be a good trait gene to lock down bigger fatter bud formation

il try and carefully get all the doubles out seperatly and keep them in pairs, i can see a good few pairs in there. would be nice if each pair is a m & f of exatly the same phenotype

Yeah that is new to me.. I am sure some breeders have seen some stuff like that.. Cool.

or even if they were twins. two of the same female wouldn't be half bad.

not a update, just a sneak peek of the start of my 2010 summer greenhouse/outdoor auto grow.

I bolted 2 reflectors together to make 1 big one. i got 2 x 125w cfl in there (1200w equivilent?)

and i got 24 x 3l deep square pots with various auto flowering strains under it waiting to pop there heads above the soil.
