I can understand historically significant finds. But, nothing of significant value in NY state can be kept. If you find precious metals in NY state that have little to no historical value on your own land it has to be handed over to the state. That is what I do not agree with. Even though we own the land and pay taxes on said property it still belongs to the state.

I feel the same ,its greed why they do it .

My comment about not handing anything over was to do with gold that no body has seen or even touched not artifacts ,i really couldnt care about thise id probably bury them again and leave it where it is

Also, be aware that sometimes good assayers, at least in Alaska, can often/frequently examine gold, and have sometimes a very specific knowledge of where it's from, based on purity and content. This feature has been handy when someone's been robbed for gold from location 'x' and someone unknown to the assayer, or even a known someone, appears with gold that matches that source.

Plenty of people love to buy gold nuggets so its not hard to move privately and you get a better price than 10% below spot price at gold buyers .

My younger son left me with a couple sealed silver bars, and I've told another poster that I'm waiting until something along the lines of another Hunt Bros scam arises, and the silver can fund my non-existent retirement account.

Though I suspect any such increase in value is apt to arrive long after my post-mortem date.

I've also got a few older worn silver eagle dollars and some Kennedy half-dollars (early mid-1960s), as well as desirable wheat back pennies I'm hanging onto.

Jewlery and watch makers will buy raw gold all day long at a good price, and tourist outfits running mining recreation sites that salt their sluices, too. There's some of each of those locally.

That was never going to end well .
Gold has been going up steadily of late .
Im holding out as long as i can before i cash in .

Nothing to worry about with my bottle tops and pull tabs. I'm sure my state doesn't want those precious artifacts. Keep finding treasure folks. I still get excited each time I dig a signal, even if it is only a penny.

Just did a quick google on Hunt
That was never going to end well .
Gold has been going up steadily of late .
Im holding out as long as i can before i cash in .

1977 in the Yukon (Canada) gold was pretty/relatively low, but that was a standard pricing back then. Then in `1979, gold shot up to over $900+ CAD, and there were folks running tailings piles from ancient mines and making bank big time.

Old fashioned claim jumping on Bonanza Creek back then and elsewhere, too. it was NUTS.

The campground across the Yukon River from Dawson City, YT at that time was loaded with heavy equipment operators pining for work, many not getting hired, and alcohol-induced fisticuffs ensued many times over.

Now, with gold (the last I checked) up over $2,500 to $2,700 USD here in Alaska a while ago, the old days are gone for now, and a little bit of gold is worth a fair bit.

I still have a good size jar of unwashed paydirt that a former friend in the bush gave me years ago from what was then a productive mine. Maybe one day when I'm bored and thinking about it, I can pan or otherwise wash that stuff.
