They're all a bit "energetic" for the first four years or so. I would find a Jack Russel Hybrid. Nice intelligent and very curious breed. Can be yappy in pure form.

my brother has a "chiweenie" , mini dachshund x Chihuahua. it was real chill until a month or so ago, now I want to step on it...another bud has a Chihuahua that will actually get up on the couch with you & zone out unlike most of the yappy little POSs. :)

ya my problem is most pocket pet dogs make me wanna punt their little asses..i realize pups are energized and an owner can influence how a dog is ..just wondering if there was some more relaxed than others...jack russels are real energetic I know that..had a friend once had some

The best all-around small dog would be the Miki. It's a rare breed that got its start in the 1980's as a mix of the best (health and temperment) of several of the small breeds but now breeds true.

They are very mellow, smart, loving dogs that are easy to train and love to please.

I have 9 of 'em!

I have neighbors who keep Westies. They keep their puppy-like behavior into adulthood. Very friendly little dogs. They like to play. Not neurotic and hyper.

Most small dog breeds were developed to hunt rats. They're always nervous and searching for something. Just can't relax. They were bred to be like that.

a neighbor has a Cavalier King Charles spaniel. gorgeous little dog, and a non-yapper to boot. it DOES want to be petted & lick you constantly however...nothing half a yellow valium wouldn't fix. :tiphat:

I'm fairly convinced that my next dog will be a small to medium size, a Brittany Spaniel is as big as I'm willing to go but would really prefer a smaller dog. I'll use petfinder.com again as they have a huge inventory from hundreds of rescue shelters.

I thought about a field-bred Brittany to hunt grouse with. everyone tells me they are pretty laid back dogs...

found mine & picked her up today, been on the road since 9am, clocked around 370 miles after a doctors visit then a long ride to pick up a mini dachshund, sweet little girl, first thing she did after coming inside was to mark her new turf :dunno:

even though I'd just brought her inside I'd realized she was too afraid of her new surroundings outside and wouldn't/didn't pee, I shamed her and put her in her kennel.

hate to start that way but rules are rules :)

pics to follow.......
