OK gang need your collective wisdom

OK gang need your collective wisdom

I am going to move my op into a 24K square foot greenhouse and we are putting 100 - 50 gallon smart bags in their for an early crop. I need supplemental lighting, I've seen others do it with CFL (T-5's) we believe the 100 bags will take up about 3,000 sq ft...

MY QUESTION - Is their a way for me to calculate how many T5's I need to just supplement 4 hours of darkness (2 in the morning...2 in the evening) until late March?

Thank you

Mega :tiphat:

Instead of T-5`s that`ll die quickly guaranteed from outdoor exposure to the elements , hang 430 watt MH bare bulbs wired to heavy duty Intermatic outdoor irrigation timers , and calculate watts per sq ft exactly like you would for inside growin........but....

Yas could probably get by with waaaay less lumens since all yas`re tryin ta do is to extend the photoperiod and keep from triggering hormonal changes in the plants while preventin em from spittin pistils too soon.......

Glad surgery went well and hope the holidays find yas in good spirits mega........Holler if I can help Bro......

Peace.....Freds......:ying:.....

How long how high how wide is the green house? Cost

Maina...I don't have "exact numbers" and we will still be 70 days later starting 200 more plants so I expect to use about a 14" wide by almost 100 - 150 feet long side of the GH to run these in.

OK so your saying I should use 430 MH's ok......those can be had..I also think your spot on with WAY less lumans than the "normal" calculation calls for..that's kinda why I'm asking Fred......it ONLY is "SUPPLEMENTAL" lighting just to not get the plants hormones messed up....I need about 2 hours in the AM and 2 in the PM until late March, we are planning on planting by possibly 3rd week in Jan to 1st week February depending on how fast the money guys move.....BUT I have to have all contigencies taken care of so when I get the green light we are "elbows and assholes" into this thing with my partner who might have to jump on a plane and get his ass here PRONTO lol!

Thanks mang....I may have to PM you directly as this thing goes forward...if your ever in Cali...I'll have about 200 - 300 bows to smoke you out in 4-5 months!

And the 1st thing my "boss" wants to run is 250 Girl Scout Cookies......(I'm also going to start some "Dirty Girl" seeds to go on a pheno hunt for the perfect Dirty Girl!) LOL

8 bulb T-5`s are 432 watts and are directional as in X amount of horizontal footprint , as to where bare bulbs hangin give 360 degree coverage regardless of the diminished lumens finally decided on for as yas said just "supplemental" lighting to extend the photoperiod and prevent triggering hormone responses in the plants till they get big enough for mother nature to take care of the veg process.......

Best start bustin some beans if yas need 250 clones that root and grow similarly in plant structure my buddy......Tempus Fugit and all that other profound bullshit.....

Good luck Bro.....Freds....:ying:.....

I'm probably the least qualified guy to chime in here (at least based on experience), but I've got to imagine you don't need the full horsepower (or cost) of HIDs to supplement lighting just enough to sneak some daylight on either side of the sun..

I'm imagining a string of trouble-lights, almost -- picture the lights set up around a roadside christmas tree lot.. ?

I've got to believe that the lumens from several CFLs ought to be adequate to keep your broads from doin' the sexytime thing..

Maybe not.. ? But I finger it's worth an exploration before dropping potentially unnecessary dough on a slew of HIDs..

well EVERYTHING is on for a decision today. My boss is negotiating for the 54K square foot greenhouse today.....I just sit here waiting for a phone call, if it goes I could be living out of a motel room (until he get's us a trailer or house to rent) and my partner will be on a plane flying out to Sacramento International Airport and we get BUSY!

I hate waiting.................... :clock watch:

Oh Happy New Year everyone, please be safe and have a "designated" driver or get a taxi if you choose to drink tonight, wouldn't want to loose any good friends, be safe and have a great night!

I agree that a bunch of cfls ought to be able to keep plants from flowering, though I doubt they will contribute much in the way of growth. I know I've read about guys keeping their outdoor in veg with only a few cfls. If you want ideal conditions for growth before and after daylight, its gonna take a lot of wattage in such a large space.

I'd tend to agree, you still save on having the lights on for the full 12-16 hours or so for indoor grows. So I'd still shoot for 50 watts/sf in a greenhouse. If you want to flower during summertime guess you'd also need to make a light tight covering for the greenhouse. The cfls would be a stop-gap measure but not optimum.

We did NOT get the Chico greenhouse....really disappointed.....looks like the "other" dude that was in their initially had "right of 1st refusal" written into his contract and he "nixed" the deal.

We are looking at Santa Barbara, San Diego and I am now thinking of going back and just trying to "boot strap" a small acre or two for me and my grow partner...instead of this huge insane greenhouse thing..of course I am just feeling tired and down at the moment....

Anyway......onward into 2013.....something will develop!
