Medical grow plans..continuous..using air layering

I live in michigan we are allowed 12 plants per patient.....

Im going to design a grow around these plant numbers.....

The new take with this grow is how I plan to use air layering...

===============================

Let me start at flowering and work backward.....

I plan to use 2 x 1000 gavitas...

4 plants in 20 gallon smart pots..... they are 4 weeks apart

when 2 plants start... the other 2 are 4 weeks

I plan to use gorilla glue.... 8 weeks is sufficient for this strain...

=================================

In veg..... under 1000 mh.....

2 plants in 20 gallon smart pots..... 4 weeks total....

2 plants in 8 gallon recycle bins 4 weeks total....

2 plants in 5 gallon buckets .....4 weeks total

Thus every 4 weeks two new plants in 20 gallon smart pots are readied.....

12 weeks is more than sufficient to veg a well trained plant....

I also plan to keep a mother plant...... but used much differently than others use her.....

The mother plant.....

she will be in a 5 gallon container....

My plan is to use 2 opposing nodes....... for all the growth......

The top is pinched the two opposing branches growing.....

Once they have 2 nodes they will again be pinched .......

until I have 8 tops....... these will be allowed to grow to the outer perimeter......

then upwards... This mother will have 8 branches that extend mostly equally to the
perimeter of the container.....

at some point the stems will be pinned to the soil.......allowing the branches to grow upward......

When they are large enough I plan to air layer the branches......

The air layering......

I have done quite a bit air layering..... but only a couple with cannabis.......

This is a far more structured effort.....

There are a few examples here on this site....others on utube.....

My air layers will be pretty good size..... and about a 1 inch ring is made in the stem....

IMO all green material must be removed......

In my experience air layers is much more consistent than cloning........

When the green layers are removed the plant resources created in the leaves cant get to the roots.....

while the white inner core provides water and nutrients to the layer......

The nutrients get backed up where the ring was cut.....the roots will form on the cutting side of the ring......

I plan to use....rapid rooter plugs....and a plastic wrap..... so I can see when roots form.....

Most people are delighted to see roots....almost always within 14 days.......

cut the stem ..... and they have a new plant.......

I plan to do somthing a bit different....... I plan to remove the plastic wrap......

Use a beer cup...... and clam-shell the cup around the air layer for an additional week or 10 days......

at the end you have a well rooted .....and large clone........

ready to go..... in my case directly into a 5 gallon container......

Another advantage..... you can actually begin training the cutting while still on the mother plant

to help it on its way once it is independent......

My plant count is then

flowering

4 @ 20 gallon smart pots....... 2 per gavita 1000

Veg....

2 @ 20 gallon smart pots....4 weeks

2 @ 8 gallon .....4 weeks

2 @ 5 gallon....4 weeks

1 @ 5 gallon ..... mother layer plant.....

11 plants.....

I would not be inclined to call a plant thus created a new plant....until it was severed from the mother layer.......

Im currently in the process of swithching over to this system......

I will over the next couple months creating a couple very well trained moms.....

Moms who will be trained specifically for this task......

I invite comments and opinions.....

I only post this to provoke some thoughts especially from medical growers.......

I said before I would be uninclined to call something that is created this way..... a plant until it is removed from the mother plant......

Since the is about the law...... here is some.....

The Ninth Circuit has long held that “marijuana cuttings must have root formations to be considered plants for sentencing purposes.” United States v. Robinson, 35 F.3d 442 (9th Cir. 1994). The Court held in Robinson that “ntil a cutting develops roots of its own, it is not a plant itself but a mere piece of some other plant,” and adopted the rule that cuttings are not "plants" unless there is readily observable evidence of root formation. Such readily observable evidence of root formation requires “observable roots or root hairs,” and not merely a structure or swelling from which roots will emerge.

They seem to be saying two things....... that for the cutting to be a plant......

it must in fact be a cutting....and have roots.......

My contention is....that until this air layered plant is removed from the mother air layer.....

it is not a plant legally.......

This in fact could save a couple weeks to a month vs a small clone.......

The potential to create a 12 inch layer I think is very doable.......

I suppose what this suggests....... Is which would you prefer???

on day one of its life as a plant......

a small traditional clone.....

or a very well rooted 12 inch hulking air layer as its day one as a plant......

The plan described is only the initial plan.......

Im hoping by creating large layers.....the veg time can reduce the veg time to 8 weeks.......

I suspect I will find this to be true......and still be able to fill my 4 x 4 double screens....

4 @ 20 gallon smart pots....... 2 per gavita 1000

Veg....

2 @ 20 gallon smart pots....4 weeks

2 @ 8 gallon .....4 weeks

4 @ 5 gallon ..... mother layer plant.....

the second roll thru I plan to remove the 5 gallon veg stage.....as above

That now makes 8 plants.... and I would carry 4 moms...... built for air layering....

After all they say....variety is the spice of life.....

Have you picked strains for each yet? W 4 moms you could have an excellent variety.

3 at this point......

gorilla glue.... won the michigan canabis cup last year

death star....finished second......

and I plan to pick up at least one more clone OGKB 2.0 from chunky pigs.....

he will be at our cannabis cup in august.....

Im not sure on the other as yet......

my original clone from death star and glue are finishing in about a month.........

smelling interesting so far.....

I did just buy a camera..... and plan to demonstrate the air layering moms to produce monster clones...... lol.....

DOnt hold your breath..... I only have small cuttings atm....but will be making moms from a couple.....The initial training for the moms Ive done before.... just for scrogging....

it will be similar for making moms as well....

The reason Im posting..... I dont see a lot of risk....and I like the concept..... maybe someone else would like to take the concept and run with it...

I also realize the logistics of this..... involve a number of months.....

Looks like a good start, I like you thinking on air layering, though it might be wise to consult a professional. What makes sense to us isn't always legally kosher.

There is actually nothing here I havent done....

I just have not done this in a way that puts the pieces together......

If anyone is interested......

Its all about the mother plants..... grow out a mom this way.......

give it a shot......

Its really the same training I did for my current GG plant.....

the plant was spread to the edges.....then allowed to grow up.....

take one branch and do an air layer....

easy stuff.....

I suspect its a vastly underappreciated technique...

I appreciate the caution..... one of the reasons I posted this....was to see if anyone disagrees with what a plant is.......

Im a good reader and googler....lol.....and I suspect this method sort of falls thru the cracks.......

This is a comment on a lawyers web site...

Question: I was curious about becoming a caregiver. The marijuana law says you can have 12 plants per patient. My question is what is the definition of a plant? Is there a certain stage of growth or is even a seedling considered a plant?

The Michigan Medical Marijuana Act is blissfully silent as to what is a "plant." We actually have this question come up a lot. For example, is a dead plant a 'plant' (most cops say "yes"). Is a cutting a 'plant?' A general rule of thumb that we suggest, is for a cutting or seed to be considered a 'plant' the stalk must have some type of roots. A seedling or cutting is considered a 'plant' the minute it develops roots, even the almost invisible white air roots.

I dont believe roots forming on different parts of the plant..... qualify.....

All these things start with cutting...... until you have done that....its not a separate plant....

If anyone disagrees and has a ref.....or not......

what do you think???

Here is a great thread ..........

Its actually amazing..... and why this technique hasnt caught on??????

you tell me.....

When you read this thread..... You can kinda see what I mean.....

when I say monster clones......

Really....

If you do it right....you are virtually certain of success......

The threadstarter in the above thread...IMO....is a visionary..... he also talks about plants not being plants until they are cut from the mom......

Read his thread very carefully if you are interested in the concept.......

I have just started my journey...... do you want to play too?????
