Maple leaf indica....Selection for medicinal use

L

longshot

Hello all,
I am just embarking on the selection process with 10 different maple leaf indica females.

I'm hoping to find something that helps a good friend of mine with her illness; Crohns.
I've no idea wether MLI is a good strain for this ailment or not, it's just a starting point for me. Anyone with any experience...please chime in.

I'm also hoping for a nice bit of trim for some late night hash for me!

Ok. I started with 1 pack of seeds from sensi seeds, via DC. 15 seeds came in the new bubble pack. I germinated them all together with 100% success.
I ended up with 11 females, 3 males and 1 was culled by the dog. One of the males was a bit of a mutant and was culled. One of the females was culled by pure neglect on my behalf.
Once sexed, cuttings were taken of everything and we arrive at something like the point I am at now.

I am currently 6 days into 12/12 with the first 6 females.

This first shot is from just over a week ago, 2 days prior to switching the photoperiod.

Whats your setup? Lights, pot size etc...

Best bet is to keep a mom of each until you can finish em up and smoke em all..

Thats when you should pick your keeper..

For medicinal purposes dont look for yield, appearance or smell.

Smoke them all and most importantly have her smoke them and see which is the best for her.

Then you can SOG that clone over and over and she will have the meds she deserves.. you too :)

Hi OGBluntman420, thanks for stopping by.

Whats your setup? Lights, pot size etc...

I knew I'd forgotten something!
The plants are currently inside my heater.

Ok, I'll elaborate!...
I am running this box to keep the temps up in my other box during the lights off period. Mel Frank told me to do it. This is a quote from The Marijuana Growers insiders guide circa 1639 (ok it was 1989 but it seems like a few centuries ago now!)...

"The best way to heat a garden is to add more lights. Watt for watt, lights and their ballasts radiate nearly the heat that electric heaters do."

So anyway, the lamp is a 250w hps. The pot size is 4 and a bit litres (5l water bottles with the tops cut off); that's about 6" wide by 9" deep. The soil in the pots is a fortified recycled organic mix. I water with rainwater.

Smoke them all and most importantly have her smoke them and see which is the best for her.

Now this is the bit that worries me slightly. She has only been smoking a short while and is not really used to decent home grown quality weed. I'm not sure she'd be able to identify the best one for her. I will definitely have her test them for herself though.

Thanks for your advice,

How would this be with backpain? Have a family history of major back issues on the maternal side.

Hi Nepthaze, thankyou for your interest.

I'm not sure how effective MLI is for back pain. I suffer myself with occasional back problems so I'll be able to give out some info at a later date. Meanwhile, anyone with any experience, please feel free to pipe up:)

In all honesty I've no idea how effective MLI is for any illness. I just picked it as a starting point due to its pure indica pedigree and its good reputation as a strong smoke.

Sensi seeds say this about the strain:
A most interesting Indica strain with a long history brought out of the Afghan mountains just before the Russian invasion. For some, this precious strain will have a whiff of familiarity because it was used as an important building block for some of the most famous varieties of today. It's a compact powerful plant with wide fingered leaves and a very sweet Indica Maple aroma.

And from their website...
Maple Leaf Indica is the same as it's always been - a hybrid of Afghani cultivars.

Like Afghani #1, Maple Leaf is a made from old Afghani lines that are from different gene-pools but have a very similar overall appearance.

This kind of crossing results in hybrid vigour and very uniform plants.
and...
She's a straight Indica, so she's compact and fast. Grow her to about half the size you want her in the end, then induce flowering. She will gain the rest of the height as she flowers.

Powerful Indica stone, but not head-destroying like some Afghanis - ML's effect is sweet and warm.

Among the best smell and taste of any pure Indica in our collection (IMHO), ranging from syrup-sweet to pineapple.

As mentioned earlier, anyone with any experience of MLI, either from a medical or a growers perspective, do please chime in:) Any comments are welcome.

MLI was a very good choice. Zepp himself said MLI was one of the most underated strains ever and he said most people dont know how much its used for breeding. Good luck bro, if i could buy any seeds it would be the MLI. Peace.

Thanks, that's good to know T.dot.Toker, your input is appreciated:)

I found a couple of other interesting notes over at sensi's site...
As I understand it AK-47 - a pure Afghani hash plant with outstanding resin production and an exceptionally fast flowering time (hence the 47 part of the name) - was around since the Eighties.

The 'AK' is said by some to be a reference to Afghan Kush, ie from the Afghan part of the Hindu Kush mountain range or (meaning almost the same thing) a kush plant from Afghanistan.

The two meanings tied together very well as AK-47, since this was a strain that was brought out of Afghanistan around the time of the Soviet invasion, when there was a huge excess of that particular gun in that particular country.

There was also a fear that the ancient cannabis traditions of Afghanistan were in danger, so quite a few treasured strains (that normally would never have been allowed out of their circle of cultivators) to leave the country for the sake of preserving them. Maple Leaf Ind. is descended directly from another one of these strains. If you read the very old Seed Bank catalogues (1985), you can find a direct reference to this.
and...
The "Maple Leaf Wilson" reference is from the 1989 catalog page 8 listed under "Original Afghan Mix" 50 seeds $150

Original Afghan Mix
This seed line comes directly from the collection of the late "Maple Leaf" Wilson, reputedly one of the first collectors of true Afghan seeds. He was called "Maple Leaf" because he grew some of the first indicas that had been seen in America, and their broad leaves could only be compared to maple leaves. Our Afghan Mix was propagated from his original stock, completely unselected, therefore possesing all the variety that existed in the original gene pool. Due to extreme variation that exists between the seedlings, this mix is recommended for serious breeders and collectors only. Sold in a special breeders pack of 50 seeds.

So, My question about the current "Maple Leaf Indica" available from Sensi is this...Is this strain originally from the above mentioned collection?
The question at the end of the second quote remained unanswered, dissapointingly!

Good morning longshot!

Very interesting project you have there! Maple leaf has been my favourite indica for years. I tried her when sensi offered her in their catalogue in pure form, about 5-6 years ago.

I emailed sensi and they replied that MLI was a 3 way afghani cross derived from Wilson indica genepool. They grew like pure indicas but the colour was lighter than their Afghani 1.

The first maple i grew had an incredible quality of aromas. She was so stinky that a gramm bud hide in the bag would smell miles around. It was incredible tasty. Some kind of deep skunky smell (deep part of skunk 1 smells but not skunky at all).

I didnt grow MLI again but the MLI clones i recived later where moe high yielding but less quality. I dont know if they were bad grower selections or if the quality of the line decreased .... I havent done a selection again recently. Should be very interesting to check what is sensi offering now. Thanks for the great thread! Im curious to see them flowering and hear your smoke reports. Good luck on the grow! dubi

hey there longshot!

The MLI is a very good choice. one of my fav' strains out there!
I grew a cross of MLI (MLI x Buddahsister) both indoors and outdoors.
grows super sticky smelly buds. good yield.
It had an AWESOME smell and tasted of sweet candy / maple / pine hash
about the high - I found the high to be pretty damn potent! very indica body high, makes you feel really good and munchied! each bowl smoked hits you as strong as the first one, and you find yourself soaring high :joint:
I would also suggest harvesting the MLI a bit late than usual, to give it that extra body stone touch, ya know?
as for killing pains with MLI , I grew this strain for my good friend who suffers from MS (multiple sclerosis), which involves lots of pain and discomfortability all over your body..
he said the MLI really helped him to relax and feel his body less in pain, above that he was able to get up and walk around (slightly dizzy when he over puffed lol) , which usually wasn't so easy for him to do so.

I think its a good med' strain. but from what i leared medicines are medicines... everyone reacts differently to meds, so your guy may really like the MLI or it may not help him too much at all. the best way to find the best med is to grow out many strains and test them all - then selecting the best effecting strain.

here's pics of the MLI x buddahsister:

exactly, there's 2 awesome older threads on icmag about mli, for anyone curious or looking for info you should look them up. one is from zepp and i forget the other person but they are actually the ones who turned zepp on to the mli.....i wanted to order it a few times also but i haven't for some reason.

Good evening all:)

Firstly, what a fantastic response! Thankyou all so much for taking the time to drop in and offer kind words and great contributions, it's appreciated.

dubi, great post, excellent info! I guess that pretty much clears up the unanswered question! Thanks man!
It also ties in with the variation I'm seeing in the plants. I've got two distinct phenotypes and possibly two others, though they may just be variations of the first two.
My pictures are not the best (I'll try harder next time:D) but plants 2,3,5 are virtually identical. Most of my plants seem to be this phenotype. Plant 4 is the other distinct pheno. I have one more female and a male of this sort. These ones have wide pure indica type leaves that seem a little lighter than a classic dark afghani....
She was so stinky that a gramm bud hide in the bag would smell miles around
I've got my fingers crossed! If that turns up I'll have to select it for myself! Plant 1 looks like a slight variation on the main phenotype and plant 6...hmmm..It's one of a kind at the moment. It certainly looks like a fairly pure indica anyway.

Zion, great pics! She looks pretty:) Sounds a tasty smoke too!
I'm really pleased to hear the strain is working as a medicine for your friend. It has given me great confidence and I now have a very positive vibe towards the plants:D

Time2Unite, thanks for the pointers. I've been busy with the search function and I found zepplindoods thread you mentioned:click here . No pictures though? Maybe just me?
I also found a nice smoke report:clicketyclick
Now this qoute from the second thread is interesting...
She grew quite normally up until the third node, after which she turned quad, putting out 4 leaves at each node.
...This is what I culled one of the males for!

Take care,
lonshot

Hey,

Your MLI leaves are thinner than ones SWIM has seen. Because of that, they might go longer than 45 days. I am utterly surprised at Sensi and happy for you for the great germ ratios you got.

K+ for the happy greens, yo.

i know i'd be keeping one of them fat leaved pheno's, it will probably be the most heavy hitter too...i'd be looking for the most indica thats forsure.

did u keep any of the males or did you cull them all?

I have wanted a maple leaf indica since i first saw her online, I believe around 1999...
But that MLI looks amazingly like a strain of mine I call Stinky...
Even the budset is similar... Strange....
Good luck in the med search, Im on one myself.. Endless medsearch.. Been what, about 3 years of testing everthing under the sun.
You'll find her the perfect medicine, then you'll start craving variety.. Off you'll go to search again... And before long your hooked..
Welcome aboard longshot, to the med train...
Id give my nuts for A pack of those seeds described here...

"Our Afghan Mix was propagated from his original stock, completely unselected, therefore possesing all the variety that existed in the original gene pool. Man oh man alive.......
