Malawi Style Cob Curing.

The rehydration experiment was a success. I figure it was about 16 hours that the slice of bread was suspended above the buds. After removing the bread the buds stabilized at ~75% RH and stayed there for 5 hours, at which time I cobbed the ounce up.

It's sweating in the dehydrator, at close to 104 F. I'll check it at 12 hours, because this delicious chemovar's buds are just slightly more dense than my Malawi was.

I'll probably say this again and again gentlemen, but thank you for the passion you shared here. I feel like I found a gold mine. :thank you:

Its something I believe in very strongly you will go on to make wonderful cobs in the future I am sure.
Once you get into the highs produced you will see why it is so special.
I looked in on your thread at the other place you are at.
You seem to have things under control and very motivated, there was nothing I could add so I didn't.
A bit like when you have a plant thats growing wonderfully without needing any fertilizer you just dont touch it.
Must respect my lady you have the passion to succeed in anything you do.

I'm humbled Tangwena. They asked me to start that thread because my passion draws the crowd we knew this deserved. And me? Hehe, good God, I'm having so much fun it's almost sinful. Lol!

You guys made it easy to learn and too enticing to pass up.

You can be sure I'll keep the threads connected. We'll combine our passion and fire up the world, one cob at a time. I expect you to live a couple more decades now. :eyelash:

anyone able to source organic non sprayed corn husks?? or is idea just not to use corn husk at all now?
Corn is only sprayed as a seedling (6 to 10 inches high)" and that's only to kill weeds trying to compete. Once corn gets going, it takes over and suffocates almost any weeds trying to grow so spraying is not needed.

I've been living rural most of my 60 years and have only seen a corn field sprayed for bugs (via a chopper) once, so you're pretty safe.

You may have missed this in the thread but you can use Banana leaves to wrap the cobs. You can get Banana leaves year round at almost any Chinese grocery store or market (Do you have T&T there?)

Corn husks freeze very well and don't turn to mush. You should still put the corn husks in a freezer bag, or a bread bag, for freezing because they'll dry out a bit via sublimation sitting in the freezer (aka; freezer burn).

remember pesticides are different then herbacides. thick corn doesnt choke out worms infact promotes them ;)

not only is there amounts, the most is on the husk... just fyi. and while small amounts your smoking them straight to ur blood stream. not through your gut which can destroys alot of them.. so even if classified safe amounts thats not amounts intended for smoking nore does it explore chemistry of vaporizing or burning those chemicals. anyhoo.

PLEASE DONT USE BANANA LEAVES! much much worse. plus as not intended to consume and grown in third world countries likely dont have to meet any standards.

I grow a 12x12 plot next to the garden and help the grandkids pick it, clean it then eat it. It's a summer tradition. But I'll be saving those husks this time. :tiphat:

You can grow sweet corn easy peasy. Just plant and forget. If you only have a small space, you can throw seeds down 8 " apart in a small circle the size of a big car tire and you'll have all the husks you'll need for a year. Once you get the corn, boil it to almost cooked, cut it off the cob with a knife and vacuum seal it. You'll be eating fresh corn next winter.

The banana leaves used are from spouts and not the full grown monsters you see in pictures. If that makes any difference. Still, good catch. Thanks.

I make sticky rice like you get with dim sum (most times it's wrapped in Lotus leaves). But like you said, eating it and inhaling it are two different things.

That's what I love about this place, people catch what you miss.

I just love the loosing your mind type high its so energetic and I can never stop laughing and taking the piss out of everyone real bring in the clowns stuff.
I had some at the start of a 5 hour flight across Australia it was a spectacular event I couldn't look at my wife without cracking up it was hilarious and took me back to my youth in Malawi when we used to score the laughing grass its one of my favorite highs.

Do the husks soak up the medicine and if so is it a good idea to cut up the husks and roll it up as a joint?

On a funnier note maybe the idea originally was to smoke the entire cob for a ceremony.

What about rolling in tobacco leaves? And even the canna fan leaves?

I am interested in understanding the burial technique as it is a great overall security measure. My guess is the cobs are placed in a strong clay pot with a lid maybe with some coals in the dirt to rob the dirt of oxygen long enough to perform the cure but not close enough to burn the product. The bark and husk would serve to aid in reducing the influence of heat.

Oh, I am well versed in your Zam write ups; hence my excitement - I also have Panama there and a Panama/Malawi which I'll also cob. I am after the trip varieties!

Nice one my friend you will certainly find them in those.
I have grown Panama 3 times now and loved them all plenty strong enough.
The Panama x Honduras would leave Durban Poison for dead its that strong.
I am getting to love that stuff the smell and taste are so good even if it wasn't powerful. But its a rocket ride really trippy in higher doses.
But for loosing touch and not giving a hoot Zam is King.
I smile from ear to ear like Mick Jagger. I only need to look someone in the eye smile and if they even react I burst out laughing your going to have a ball.
I tried to tell my wife something but every time I looked at her and smiled I lost it again and again I gave up trying to talk to anyone.
Just put the sunglasses on, the ipod in my ears and took a flight in my head. It felt like I was on the nose of the jet I was traveling so fast.

Its really strange but the resin doesn't stick to the corn husk its as if its waxy or something.
You will find a joint lasts forever the compacted cob smokes very slowly and lasts forever. Usually a couple of drags is enough if its good weed.
I was always having half smoked joints all over the place.
In Malawi when they bury the cobs they used the dung heaps from the cattle they would line a hole with banana leaves and put the cobs in cover with more banana leaves and then the dung.
There were other methods such as between the thatch on the roofs of the huts and more I am sure.

Golden information. You are a true fella thank you Tangwena.

Composting dung will absolutely rob the area of oxygen, mask any smell, add weight/compression, and add a slow heat. :respect:

I will give this method a go when the season is up.

Here's a tip for those who don't have a vacuum sealer but still want to try cobbing - Don't try and get by with cobs just tightly wrapped Saran (PE) wrap instead of vac sealing them after the initial 24 hour sweat, it can work but there will be a chance of getting mold. So instead, use boiling hot water in a bowl to get very close to a vacuum seal on sandwich bag containing the cobs*

*Ziploc quart storage bags work good as they have a double seal. Place the cob inside at the bottom of the bag, 3/4 seal the bag then use a large spatula or spoon to submerge the bag, press the bag down from the bottom first and slowly submerge the bag from the bottom up. When you get very close to the seal, press both of the seals closed and then press hard again along both seals to make sure they are both 100% sealed and then dry the exterior of the bag and store it but of course still monitor it and to re-do this process with a new bag if the bag is not still tightly shrunken around the cob.

Don't try and substitute Saran wrap for an actual vacuum. The chance of developing mold, which can look like patches of a fine pale color powder on the surface of the cobs, will be much higher. I've make cobs with and without the Ghetto vac (hot water) method and the only time I got mold was when I just used Saran type sandwich wrap at week 3 ~ 4 of storing the cobs during humid weeks, I've never got mold when I've used the ghetto vac (hot water) method. Also note that out of the hundreds of posts in this thread from those who have tried cobbing with Tangwena's method I don't think there's been hardly any that got mold apart from me lol, so the chance of developing mold on your cobs is as small as getting it with other types of curing and storage (which equals zero if you follow Tangwena's instructions).

Once outside I pulled out a really skinny jay, it looked terrible, it was scrunched up in my top shirt pocket and was all squashed and bent, I originally rolled it just for myself for during or after the party. I apologized and said it doesn't look much but it will smoke slow. I went on giving them a quick rundown of cobs, the method etc as I straightened the skinny assed joint. They had the look on their faces that said "phuck! what a waste of time this will be..standing outside in the cold for one hit on a skinny jay made with crappy homegrown brickweed cured like blue cheese". Well, the joint got passed around 4 or 5 times between the three of us, they couldn't believe just how slow it burned and how many hits we got off it .....next day they both said it was a trippy riding home.

Ha Ha yes they last a long time a big joint will service a large group quite easily.
Keep up the good work spreading the word. I cant wait to show off my latest batch to my friends at my fishing shack in a couple of weeks ha ha.
I am going to light up that small fishing town, its so cool seeing all the heads wandering around the town on cloud nine its always pretty obvious to me who has tried them.
