Malawi Greenhouse Organic

Dehumidifiers saved my grow. Had to get that out there as this is my first greenhouse grow. There is frequently heavy, humid fog that makes everything MOLD. I have never thought that a pure sativa would be affected by mold but this climate is just so damp. Plus the greenhouse makes it even more humid. I have 2 dehumidifiers running anytime it fogs or at night when temps drop. I was experimenting with SCROGing an outdoor plant. Not just supporting, but real SCROGing. Letting the plant never get too high over the screen. The results weren't that great FOR MY SETUP. AND LAZINESS.
As for the Malawi. 3 females out of 6 seeds. I decided to SCROG the best female(F1). Second best(F2)got the tie down LST treatment. 3rd plant(F3) got to grow naturally. Here's some pics

FINALLY GOT IMAGES TO WORK AGAIN.
F1(SCROG) filled in nicely. Looks good during veg but flowering was overcrowded. Too much leaf overcrowding buds.

F3 getting taller

Malawis are looking great. I tried my hand growing out some Swazis back in 2012. They were started a bit late, and they were barely beggining to flower outdoors with the first snowfall of the year. Def not something I could run outdoors. Ive had great luck with African seed co Durban Poison, would like to try the malawi. My understanding is that its similar to swazi.. is this true? Perhaps Id have to try them indoors.

Now things are getting interesting. I'm very surprised at the resin production especially F2. They are really nice frosty looking plants. Very good buds. Not too leafy and covered in resin that's sticky and smells of fruity vitamins. I like this strain a lot. I feel it will have great bag appeal due to the frostiness and not too leafy for a sativa.

F1 pheno has large sparse flowers. Resiny, these babies are large corn kernels. Low yielder but my favorite smoke of the 3. Can't really say why but I like it.

F2 is a winner. Most resiny of the 3. Smells very strongly of kids vitamins. The high is also the most potent. Lethargy can creep in near the down. Best overall I think.

F3 is really special. It has thinner leaves than both others. It's a late finisher and still needs a couple weeks perhaps. Nice smell. Like F2 but more vanilla scent. Or mandarins. Sweet citrus. It seems leafy but may fatten up and be even denser than F2. I like the high on this one so far. Still to early to really say though. I'll have a puff tonight. Or vape I should say.

On one hand cannabis definitely not being an egotistic species would thrive amidst thick vegetation, on the other hand being crammed plainly calls for mould...
Scrog is supposed to be a practice to make up for lack of space and it would work perfectly alright were there proper ventilation...
Nice healthy plants by the way...

More pics
F1 SCROG full of buds. Notice how leafy though. I believe it would have grown much better if I had LSTed or just let it grow natural.

F2 leaning over. Some buds of these are sagging heavily. This one packs on resin.

F3 standing tall in its natural state. It might have fallen over if I didn't tie her up.

Exactly. I love SCROG indoors. Just not for me in anything large. Too much time I've spent tucking heads only to realize my other plants seemed to do better for way less work. SCROG is a must in certain situations.

I have little experience with sativas in general so I'm not knowledgable enough to say. But I can say it's excellent stuff. I'm high right now and feel euphoric. Bout to go dancing off this. Feels like my insides are getting massaged. Or like I'm a warm swaying waterbed. I feel heavier in a good way. Like golden syrup, my body feels thick and heavy and vibratey buzzy like a warm bumble bee vibration. Breathing feels good. No paranoia. Great great I just feel great. My gums are tingly. I vaped some of F3 and I think I like it more than F1. Super good.

F1 screened bud

F1 bud leaning outside the screen. Kernel sized flowers and sparse bud towers. Very different structure than the others.

F2 bud leaning and fattening up. Theses buds a fairly easy to trim.

F3 is not ready for her closeup. She's still fixing her hairs and putting on gloss.

beautiful plants!

this year is quite dry for me, but otherwise im facing humidity like you. could you tell me how big your greenhouse is, i mean space and what kind of dehumidifiers you are using? thanks.:tiphat:

Hi and thanks for the compliment. My greenhouse is bigger than I need since I'm also growing veggies. I'm not sure of the exact measure but it is too big for what I need. My advice is to make a small greenhouse so that way it's cheaper to dehumidify or air condition or vent the air. Make it just big enough. I have 2 large dehumidifiers and it still isn't enough. Think grow tent sized. The only reason I'm using a greenhouse is the cold, fog, and rain. Humidity is challenging. And dehumidifiers are expensive to run. I only started using them cuz I got mold aka bud rot

Thanks for the thread bagada :) Much appreciated.

You are right, greenhouses in wet areas can suffer important mold problems unless they are correctly ventilated and you are growing strains with certain mold resistance.

Your Malawis are working great in early October, very big healthy plants forming lots of big colas. I'm glad you are happy so far with their resin production and aromas.

Wish you the best for the rest of the flowering!

far beyond driven...
respect bahada,
it looks like a dream... all this nice bud's are forming...
and then this potent weed... must be a nice odor in the greenhouse!
well because of humidity i would cover the ground with foliar and let only openings for the plants... here they do it also with tomatoes... works well in all stages...
happy grown'

Hi I have to say that the mold I'm experiencing is no reflection of the genetics fault. Where I am living is mold HEAVEN. It is a combo of daily cloud fogs, sunny hot heat, and cold humid nights. This is not typical HAWAII weather. We live in the clouds. I'm sure Malawi is much better suited to a sunny dry climate. Even the tomato leaves are molding for no reason. It's a shame since I also get INTENSE high altitude sun. I've been sunburned up here in 10 minutes during noon. I'm guessing the intense sunlight increased resin production on these Malawi. They are "commercial grade" sticky. F1 and F2 are very easy to trim. These buds are fat for a 100% sativa. Mostly flowers and only thin leaves. The smell is very decent. I actually smell mango, citrus, and some skunkyness in the stem. Sour smelling right now but as some cure I think it is turning "peppery" and spicy. Time will tell. These are some of the fattest buds for a 100% sativa. It would make a great commercial strain if not for the long flowering. I am being patient yet can't wait to smoke some fully ripe Malawi.

Here is a pic to show even my young tomato plants are molding on the leaves. I have never seen this happen on such a young, robust, uncrowded plant. In that case I would say the Malawi are doing well considering the mold is not spreading quickly and is only on about 1% of the buds. If it were spreading quickly then I would harvest already but I seem to be gaining quality with time. The branches sag more and more. Maybe tomorrow I will harvest some of the riper ones.

Here's a group of F2 buds with no mold. Looks ripe enough to harvest.

An older tomato leaf covered in mold.

Here's the top cola of the F3. Notice the 2 buds near the bottom of the top cola. I'm considering harvesting this one tomorrow. It's not close to ready but I don't want mold to spread.

Some early harvested F1 bud. Still very frosty.

Any opinions an experience with mold are greatly appreciated.

Dubi, thanks for the great genetics. I'm surprised that my Malawi are experiencing more fruity smells. Not very "loud" smell but very nice. Mildly vanilla yet citrusy. I keep thinking of orange cream bars. Some are getting a spicy edge as they sit in jars. Can't wait to find out how the smells mature and change. I love the smell of a spicy well cured sativa. It makes me think of some strong magical herbs that a wizard might have. Very different from the fruity intense aromas of some indica strains. Thanks again and glad to say I trust your genetics.
