Making seeds from Ace FEMs

Hi Dubi! Thank you very much for your detailed and thorough response. There is so much (mis)information out there regarding fems and selfed plants, and it is very confusing to the average amateur breeder/pollen chucker looking to make some f2s or hybrid crosses.

What has been your experience in the male/female ratio when creating F1s or subsequent F2s/Bxs using a mother from a fem/self line and regular father? Is the ratio of males a "trait" that is passed down from fem/self line or father that varies as all traits do within the species?

I truly appreciate your time!

Dubi as I deeply respect you as grower/breeder I would expect some numbers to suport your claims. Maybe Im to femofobic, so only populations above few 1000s will give me green light :tiphat:

EDIT: I must dust myself with ash a bit..I didnt knew fem seeds are now much more reliable as before 2007/2008 when most were produced with hermies..dwarfs and hermies gave bad name at begining when unstable genetic was used to create them...
Regulars are still only option for me, as I enjoy playin with crosses etc. also you get more seeds for less money! Hey I found very few males in my regulars lately..out of 11 seeds I always get 8 to 9 females ;)

You are welcome WaterFarmFan,

Cannabis plants (from regular/standard seeds) define their sex when they reach their sexual maturity (after aprox 3-4 weeks of life for indica and indica dominant hybrids and around 6-8 weeks of life for the more sativa or tropical sativa strains).

Environmental variables affect a lot the female/male ratios in regular seeds when plants are reaching their sexual maturity.

Environmental variables that produce higher male ratios in regular seeds: very cold or very hot temps, excessive N feeding or unbalanced feeding, very short or very long photoperiods, lack of light intensity, when many plants are grown in small spaces (overcrowded gardens), erratic photoperiods, when plants are root bound due use of small pots at the time the plants are reaching sexual maturity, lack of proper ventilation or air renovation in indoor growing, and other stresses like excessive pruning, improper foliar treatments, damage in the plants, etc ....

Do the opposite to get higher female ratios: provide your plants enough space, proper constant temperatures (around 24ºC), proper balanced feeding, good ventilation, planting the seeds outdoors in its due time, etc ...

Usually tropical landrace sativas produce very high female ratios, sativa hybrids produce high female ratios, and sativa/indica and indica hybrids more normal (balanced) female/male ratios.

Hope it helps with your doubt.

i,m of the same belief , but other breeders believe sex is predetermined from fertilisation/ pollination

is there anything to back this up dubi

Sorry to resurrect this 4 year old thread but I am having trouble finding trustworthy answers for this doubt I have.

When reversing a clone with STS to make fem seeds, does it make any difference if the original clone came from a regular or feminised seed?

Hi Magoluci,

It doesn't matter if the goal is to produce fem seeds, at least under my experience. As i explained in this post in this thread:

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=7752675&postcount=20

what really counts is that the parental plants you are using to produce the seeds (whether they are regular or feminized) are sexually firm, hold the qualities you are looking for and blend well together (based on traits of the offspring). If the seeds are regular or fem is secondary.
