Making music when High(Jamming)

well,in my experience, there's no way I could play when high.Seems fine fine when you play and then the next day you listen to the tapes and DUH...
On the other hand,as a listener,I just love it...

My Grandpa played with some great jazz people back in the day and they loved the reefer, they were the bad boys of the era, but shit man those dudes foking ripped it!!

Amazing how music can be such an internal and external part of your soul.

I have been back and forth on this many times. I also think that jamming for fun is best when stoned. I also think that when I play stoned I come up with cool shit now and then .

The trick is to remember it later and write it into a song when I'm sober. That's what usually doesn't happen and why we have endless recordings of jams and jams. There are some jewels in there but Mostly its repetetive. Some soaring solos though.

POLL: I have jammed with my mates while stoned and sometimes a sober guy will try and join in. It never seems to work if the guy does not smoke at all. It sometimes works if the guy does smoke but isn't smoking that session.
That do you guys think about that?

I dont think that has anything to do with it, at least not for me. Jamming is like sex, it's best when it's with someone you know and trust, and feel comfortable playing with.

Im not to sure pot helps me physically play better, but it definately improves my state of mind for making music. Ive playes the guitar for 17 years now and have been an everyday consumer of marijuana for 14 of those years. I always prefer to smoke while i warm my fingers up playing little blues licks or strumming the beginings of a few songs. Usually by the time the joint is 3/4 of the way burnt up I am where i like to be at musically. I call this state "the zone". When im in my zone deeply I think of absolutely nothing. I play my guitar, eyes closed. If they are open, go ahead and ask me a question. I will resond with an empty stare not even recognizing the words that came out of your mouth.

Lately ive been putting Zeppelins Since ive been loving you and just jamming over it as it plays. Its a good long song to jam to.

i find when it comes to playing guitar that having 1 or 2 drinks under my belt helps to loosen me up a bit and get into the groove .... any more tho and it just becomes too much of a task and things just get sloppy
Rock on!

Interestingly enough in a book I just read about the evolution & history of Dub in Jamaica, most - but not all - of the heavyweight producers didn't allow ganja to be used in the studio proper. Which isn't to say that a session player couldn't fire one up outside or en route, but... the image I'd always had was of Dub studios being a sea of blue smoke. Apparently that wasn't the norm (with the exception of Lee Perry & a couple others).

Personally, I know the weed can definitely assist in listening to/appreciating music - but not always in making it. Depends on the people, the setting, the chemistry of the musicians, and a million other variables that are tough to pin down. Shitty/unoriginal musicians play worse stoned more often than not, IMHO.

In this super fastfowareded world theres no time to meditate and get that feelin... u know what ini talk bout, so Cannabis is the SHORTCUT! always great to play some funky rythm on the drums wile getting high, visiting the sky... well byebye

the "jam effect" is what skyrocketed my use of cannabis. My first summer of university my friend and I were blazed so we grabbed our guitars and all this crazy music began to form. Ever since then I have played guitar everyday. I'm sure you all can guess what else happens every day.
Peace. love and good smoke

being stoned allows for the release of emotion through actions and movement. Feelings and emotions are the response of our minds to the stimulation of the environment around us. In a quiet setting, the smoke pours to the heavens and the imagination (or ponderings from the soul) of the smoker travels with it. creativity in music becomes the sounds of our travelling soul. Cannabis is the key to unlock the gates of our minds and allow our souls to journey beyond our own capacity to reason.

I get high, and play rifts on my warwick 4 string bass. the low tones sooth the anguish that a lifetime of painful memories gives fuel to. Bass guitar is the blues man's guitar. low and mellow. but easy to travel on.

AWESOME THREAD!

I feel that music is the gateway to the soul, It reaches places inside that nothing else in this world can touch. For example now Im smoking and listening to some Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb. And Damn.... I cant explain it but.....Could I say it makes me feel comfotably numb. I know it sounds corny but I feel the music all through my body.
I cant play any instrument but really want to learn to play the guitar. I would love to be able to jam with like minded people I think thats so awesome. Great thread. :joint:

Gotta say I agree wholeheartedly with Pheno, a couple a pints of good beer and a joint and I'm ready to go. Since I'm a percussionist I feel throwin a couple beers in me allows my drumming to flow with the music more than just being a beat. But yeah I totally agree, jammin with your buddies smokin a couple of dubes is one great time!

rock on everyone!

by the way, if anyone here wants to post pictures of their instruments and check out some cool other instruments check out my Amateur Musicians thread! http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=80610&page=1&pp=15

I play bass ,and over the years i can honestly say. After jamming together with friends. My playing ability is hugely enhanced, when playing under the influence of Marijuana or Coacaine. On Mj it becomes incredibly creative,on Cocaine it becomes very tight ,and together.

Its like the difference between night and day...Great thread on a great subject...

Funny thing in the past..

Sly Stone from Sly and the Family Stone was famous for delaying concerts backstage ,..until someone brought him the drugs he requested,,,,Cocaine.......
Maby he was just an addict?

Sweet as thread bro!
I love token up and then getting into those 2 hour none stop jam sessions.
Last weekend I was just groovin away behind the drum kit and I suddenly realized I was singing, haha! My mates stopped playing and said wow that was fuckin awesome.
Yeah I know what you guys mean by how everything just flows in this creative energy, it's like being transported into another dimension where nothing else in the world matters but this beautiful sound dancing around you!
Music, I love it!

this has to be one of my favorite activities. there's nothin like jammin with your boys and smoke a doobie or a few. the music just sounds.. more intense. and i personally tend to pay a bit better attention to what my hands are doing on the guitar when i'm nice and high as opposed to sober.

Id just like to say that me and my friends have been smoking weed and jamming for about 5 years now .Its a process we know we grab are guitars
bongos etc go to a nice park sit on a bench roll up a joint as we sit back and take the beauty of nature in .The J gets sparked and it slowly goes in circles
Not long after I usually grab my guitar and strum a simple chord (having fine tuned the instrument before ignition)For me the guitar comes alive when im stoned I let the guitar tell me what to do i play the chord and find a rythym theres 6 strings on a guitar so you can make one chord sound very alive by
emphasing the different parts of the strings on the rythym. So once thats going i let my mind travel i imagine for example im on an old steam train
going through old school america maybe 5o years ago and the im seeing nice rolling hills and farms from the window the decor inside the train is all old school. And then i see this wise old black man with a top hat and a cane by his side he looks about 45-60 he looks sad (that chords strumming along and one of my mates maybe playing some gentle beats on the bongos and another some simple picking of notes on guitar)I imagine what this man may have expierenced what frustrations he feels with life .Then i start to sing
.Sing with passion and feeling emotion ,this balck mans emotion im the messenger from his soul to my friends playing and to those listening .Words just come ,i dont worry to much about what i say but how i sing it as long as you sing like you mean it its cool .Now things should be moving and from this point on its almost like were listening to a radio but were in charge of how it goes if that makes sense .
If anyone relates to this and jamming when stoned
Id be keen to hear your thoughts
Peace
Tricky kid

In a time like this i turn to my homie Landon and the mic and an MPC

tell it how it really is, and make it sound nice

jam on :smoke:
