Poor kids :( cant believe CHILDREN are going hungry in our rich countries. I would have given the poor kid a free lunch too.

I already donate to food banks whenever i can. I implore you to do the same if you can afford it

The truly FUCKING SAD part of this story is:

The cafeteria in that school most likely throws hot lunch food away on a regular basis. Having worked in a school cafeteria before, there is ALWAYS waste..... The one I worked in had to throw the food in the Garbage (I couldn't even take it home)...imagine throwing 20lbs of burgers in the garbage weekly...and repeating that 5 days a week just changing the main course.

Worst was working for a crown corp.... I threw 50lbs of ribeyes in the garbage one day (100 8oz steaks)...

I always thought Futurama was just a funny made-up cartoon, but it seems that cartoon and some other fantasy jokes are more like the guides our "rules" makers are going by sometimes.

Godamit, I want the royalties and residules if they are going to copy me like that too.

If I was in that woman’s shoes I would have done the exact same thing. How old is a first grader…6? She was supposed to give the child a bun with a slice of cheese and a carton of milk…sounds like jail.

When I read that I thought, "Hey, if that is gubment cheeze then it's all good then anyway." ;/

I wonder what mental giant thought that was at all good for anybody but the fucking system.

I know, just sic Michele O'Bama on their ass. She'll straighten the whole thing right out.

That is just fucking tragic that is their "policy". WTF is this, an orphanage from a Charles Dicken's novel? "More please suh". This is 2015? In a "free society"? Richest country on earth? Who do they think they are kidding with that shit? Fucking tragic.

Very good debate.

I don't have a horse in this race, but I have seen hardship
and know the difference between a hand out and a hand up.

As far as the lady getting fired, the result will be debate, which,
as seen here, can often provoke heated, emotional responses.

So how do these institutions deal with the obvious problem of the hungry children?

Rules are debated, and compromises decided upon.

Usually without a shot being fired, however magnetic the target may seem.

In this case, a hungry child gets a cheese or turkey sandwich,
washed down with hormone laden mass produced cow squeezings.

Four times, after that I guess they just euthanize him or her.

As for the bilious rantings of some in this thread, wow,
I mean its like a yahoo news story comments page in here, lol.

I'm not sure how it works,But I know that the county I live in worked a deal so not one student has to pay for their lunch.

So how do these institutions deal with the obvious problem of the hungry children?

It varies, I know that in the area my mother lives her church has a program where they help the schools provide free meals to needy children. They even continue to help during the summer break.

In discussing this issue we must try to remember that the schools and their policies are not the villains. Federal, state and county funding for schools have been drastically cut back as governments try to balance their budgets. As a result schools have been forced to make cuts of their own, such as dropping things like physical education. Art classes, music classes, etc. They've also taken up passing the financial responsibility to the parents by requiring the parents to pay for field trips, buy more of the school supplies, etc. If a school makes a policy like the one described in this story it's not because they're cruel, it's because they just don't have the resources. If they wanted to be cruel they could just tell the kid "tough luck, don't forget your lunch money next time". Also the story indicated that they give the cheese sandwich and milk 3 times for free before they charge the parent. So clearly the schools are trying to do the best they can.

I agree that the firing of the woman who gave the free food was wrong. At the same time I recognize the schools position. Rules aren't just made arbitrarily, there are reasons for their creation. In any other job a person would be fired if they decided to take it upon themselves to reject the rules and follow their own game plan.

I don't think anyone blames the people who actually work in the schools. I actually student taught and subbed a lot here in FL. I dare not say exactly where.

It always bothered me the administration building in this county is absolutely, by far, the most modern, well equiped, huge beautiful building, way better than any of the schools here. Their facilities are immaculate. While the school I student taught in, then subbed in the next year, is old, run down, (remodled 2 years ago finally) and was federally subsidised with free breakfasts and lunches for most students. Because, at one point, I believe it was about, 73%,maybe it was as high as 83%?, of the students came from homes that the income was below the poverty line. Most times a lot of those kids didn't eat at all, unless it was there. We lost those federal subsidies the next year because that home poverty level went down to only 67% of the kids homes. I forget the magic cut-off number, might have been 70 or 71%. But I still had one homeless kid living in a car in one class I subbed in that second year. She had lice in her long beautiful hair one day and the other kids totally freaked out. She ran out after I told her to go see the nurse. The look on her face was totally crestfallen or something. Totally defeated. Terrible. I felt so bad for that poor kid. I still get upset. But I had to be there for the rest of the kids, so showed no emotion. It was pretty tough sometimes. Whatever, sorry.

I subbed at other schools in the county after that too. But that admin building was by far the best. I got asked for particularly by name, a lot to sub. I 'spose I was just a glutten for punishment.

But that school I first worked in had it the worst.

Almost all of those underpaid teachers had to spend their own money on supplies sometimes just so they could do their jobs. It was expected. Meanwhile the superintendent gets a new leather chair every year so his ass is nice and comfy. So tell me about it.

I grew up in central NY state. Very different there. The teachers are underpaid there too, but at least the school board members don't drive Cadillacs there.

But this is FL, that tough middle school I taught in is in a really impoverished area. I expected shit like that there. The race riots, excuse me, gang fights too. Yeah, it happens. Even now. But that elementary school where all this is about is in progressive CO, in Denver for christ sakes.

I don't exactly know their problems, nor care much about any of it anymore really. All I really know is that it is all FUBAR, and getting worse too, if you can believe that. But I was just speaking from my point of view of here in FL, and from what I know. The education system is a shambles here, that's all I know. But shouldn't that be our first priority anywhere, educating the kids who will run everything tomorrow? And I don't know how it might be at all fixed either. But I do know excuses and blame assignment will do absolutely nothing. We are way beyond that. And I also know that anyone who says they know where the problems are, doesn't, including me. It's systemic. But the biggest problem is at the very top.

But I do think a change of policy might be called for there in that case.

'Scuse me, I guess you touched a nerve.

That's very good.

Many countries provide free college education too.

Well and good... however county does not necessarily a country make...

Although in thisyere Yooknighted States it's pretty much the same difference.

I suppose funded education and healthcare should probably be out of bounds in the "rules" department.

We certainly shouldn't have healthy educated citizens around...

They'd just pose some kind of French Revolution danger at this point....

I watched a news story about this, there are 3 levels of lunch available depending on income, level 3 is for any child w/o money and no access to the level 1 or 2 programs.

Level 3 is a fast food style burger bun with a single slice of american cheese on it, cold of course. that may satisfy some of a students hunger but is not nutritious as stated in the OP article. So not only is it inadequate as a meal it must also be humiliating to eat in front of classmates, in my estimation a double fail results in a distracted student not keeping up in their lessons.......

First off sorry for touching a nerve, I had no way of knowing it would be such a sensitive thing for anyone. Let me say though, stop apologizing for being able to empathize and have feelings, that's how humans are supposed to be.

Fixing the world from what has been done to it by man, is going to take generations. So always Education should be within our top priorities because it will usually be the next generation that will solve todays problems.

Yet somehow we are always hearing that they have to cut funding. Which is unusual knowing that most states that have gambling or lotto got it approved by the people by claiming a percentage of the money it made would go to things like education and maintaining roads. With the money those operations make (lottery and gambling) Schools should be top notch with smaller classrooms, meals, supplies, even things like laptops for every student, should be paid for. Teachers that have a passion to teach and the ability to inspire their students, rather then someone who was willing to get the certifications to teach just so they could have a job. (which is not meant as an allusion to you).
