LST training in detail. Why bushes are better

Hey I think I found a great product for this type of training. Check it guys. I got it at Lowes for like 2 bucks and you get a hundred feet of it. Its like those ties that you twist up a bread bag with...

wow yea lets keep this thread going nice plants everyone, once again though I have a few questions.
1. Is there any advantage to training the main stem versus leaving the main stem in place and training just the branches? If you get my drift?
2. Is LST good to do just by itself or is it better to LST and say prune your plants also? Which techniques combined with LST yield the most basicaly? Or is LST best just by itself?

Lol sorry if there n00b questions but thanks for the help guys.

Deff do some picks(maybe even a grow dairy(there very handy))
ITs nice to see diff ways of LST(And tie down methods(Like the guy who hooked up some nuts to the end of some wire(Handy))))Saw another guy ages ago who was useing bottles/cans...And he would fill the cans until he had the results he wanted(again clever)
Nuts on a wire? Heh, you mean like this....

Keefnuts

Make the wires any length you want, set the nuts on the dirt, or outside of the pot on the table. Easily moved during training too. I've used them a lot, and I find them really handy.

Bonsai growers use a special aluminium wire which is nice and fat (so it doens't bite into the stem), comes in many different thicknesses and bends easily - it is far softer than steel wire it is loads easier to work and remove afterwards. If you are after a very accurate training, it is perfect stuff.

LST Gone Wrong

LST Gone Wrong

I am growing C99. My plants are about a month into veg. One of the plants started getting tall and lanky. It was about 12" taller than the rest of the plants. I decided I would try and LST the tall bitch. So I tied some strings to her and pulled her down a bit. Things were going fine. The top shoot started to bend towards the light and the fan leaves levelled off so that the top of the leaf faced the light. Well I came into the grow room tonight and noticed the top of the plant wasn't pointing in the right direction.

Upon further investigation, I noticed that the plant bent at a 90 degree angle. I quickly found something to splint the stem with and tied it above and below the bend.

Here are some pictures of the damage.

You can see in this picture how the top of the plant was begining to grow towards the light.

Here is the picture of the bend

So my question is, should I take of the splint and allow it to heal at the 90 degree angle? (Like supercroping) Or should I leave the splint on and allow it to heal straight? This all taking into account that this was the plant that was stretching.

Your help would be grealy appreciated.

I think what youve done is tried to bend a bit too much too soon, and its"Creased"... Id splint it to grow straight-wont take more than a few days to heal up with a big knot in it, then you can try again...... massaging the stems before you bend is helpful, sort of taking it between ur thumb and forefinger and VERY GENTLY rotating it back and forth in ur fingertips, you will feel it start to get`easier, thats when you should bend IMO.....
you could do as you said though and splint it at 90 degrees, just make sure the crease isnt cutting off the phloem and xylem(the water up and down pipes inside the stem) if they`are bady crushed the top of the plant is fucked basically and would be better being taken off and the plant babied to help her through the shock......
Be lucky

Yep thats what i seen(good idea)

SteveO
Yep those ties i imagine to be good(I was worried they would create a paper cut effect(The thin plastic edges(know what i mean?)

The stuff i use is like that(comes on a reel),But the plastic coating is diff..It is a smoother plastic covering...Also slightly more rigid...
Hard to make sense,Can see in one of my pics tho(the green plastic wire)

I was also wondering, you guys, is it possible to get a couple ounces per plant using this method? I'm kinda confused as to when to start flowering these babies, I'm just not sure what kinda of yeilds I can get off of a certain sized plant. I guess we'll find out...:)

There's mine, that picture is 23 days from showing above the soil. I think I'm going to go to 12/12 sooner than I planned, I just gave them a half strength feeding of veg nutes and some tricarboxylic acids, and it might be their last feeding in 24/0. I'll probably do one more veg fert after they go 12/12, and once they start showing buds I'll start up with the bloom schedule.

nothing but crushing a few stems...and speaker wire to tie her back and down....may bee that doesnt pass for low stress training.

Great stuff! I have been trying to find some pics and info on this kind of plant training.
Has anyone had success with about 1' of grow room from tray to light?
I am trying to find some info on successfully growing in a 4' tall space. My ebb & Flow turbogarden is 2' tall or so and my light drops down about 1' leaving me 1' of growing space for the plants.
If anyone has had success or has seen another thread where someone has documented thier success growing with hieght constraints please point me in the right direction.
I have a good idea of what I'm doing but this is going to be my first grow and experience always counts for more than reading alone.
Thanks.

I guess you could classify scroging as a Low Stress Training, but when i think LST, i think tying down the plant.

Ive done both, and i definitely like the lst better. a Scrog in a cabinet application is especially frustrating, because the screen will probably not be modular. I can remove my ties after the buds have started to pack on a little weight. Now its just a regular bush.

I just found an interesting gremlin, Scrogging is not high stress, so i guess you got me there. :sasmokin:

Thanks ShroomDr! You really whipped that bush into submission. I like the way you kept it flat. I think that is exactly what I am going to do.
I was debating between the scrog and the lst method. I think with LST I will have more control over the spread and height.
Also, Props on the stanley fan mod. I know you said it was pulled from elsewhere but thanks for sharing that knowledge.

Again, Thanks!
