LST training in detail. Why bushes are better

I tie them down, pinch them & top them. They really love me.
I use the mini bungees to hold them down under my 400's.
I have 3 plants in bloom under an HPS.
Top left is the oldest with the forefront a week
or two behind & to the right first week.
All 3 were topped once & LST'd
The forefronts topped branches I tied in a loose knot.

Here's my largest bush to the top it's been in for 3 -4 weeks
It's had all 3 done to her pinched, topped & Lst'd.
& the forefront has been under the MH for a couple of weeks.

I started these on the bungee jewelry early
sometimes just hanging one off them coming
out of the cloning tray & into veg.

I have three vegging all tied back & 2 are pinched.

This allows me to keep under 15 plants
at any given time & maximize my space.

read this whole thread am intrigued but i was wondering......when you tie the main stem down can you just leave it there or do you have to rotate the tie around the pot?? just curious thinkin abt tryin this but dont wanna really screw it up only have a few plants...ne1 input would be appreciated

Some of the more experienced growers might find this unnecessary but if you're new to LST and are worried about snapping a stem with those ten lousy thumbs you have I recommend this. I just started using LST today and was a bit nervous of snapping my plants in two, but this made it easy. :joint:

First I didn't have any string, so instead I used this wrapping tape stuff. It's a lot thicker than string, about 10mm, so it's gentler on the stem. It's as strong or stronger than string too.

Secondly, I used paper clamps etc, and instead of tying the string to the pot I just clamped it on. So you can slide the clamps to different parts of the pot, and you can release or tighten the string really easily. This makes it incredibly easy to get the desired tension without having to retie anything.

Lastly, probably most useful for small plants when you just get started, instead of tying the string to the plant I just used two clamps and ran the string over the plant, clamped to both sides of the pot.

Hope that helps someone with as clumsy with their thumbs and as useless at tying (and untying) knots as me

bump, fantastic thread I just read every post. Can someone explain a few things to me, people have asked in previous posts but no answers.

1. Do you tie the plant around your whole pot so it creats a circle? or how do you do it?

2. I have heard allot of people doing this method in small areas with only a few plants. I will have high wattage and high plant numbers with no restricted height, would I be safer with lst or topping or even scrog to achieve the best yield.
Many thanks
JB

1. You could in essence, do a spiral if you lst in a circle pot and start near the edge. I use a rectangular pot for my PC cab grown, plant runs parallel to the soil. Got a nice 15 top canopy :)

***Jerry is right, DONT tie your string TO the plant. I cringe when I see this, its puts a lot of pressure on the stem, I prefer to use string and simply make a ^ over the branch and tape it down on two sides. This allows you to tape 1 side before lst, then holding pre-taped other end, pulling lightly as top goes down, you can stick the other end of string exactly where you want it without extra tension.

2. Im a first time grower, and I am very happy with the results in my extremely small space. I have seen huge commercial op pics on here with big-small sized screen over their plants doing the exact same thing, yeild looks top knotch. I dont know the exact benefits of large scale are, but I think if you dont wanna wait for the plant to deal with topping stress, and your lights are adequate, LST is all you need. A tip, get a lamp and put it on its side and get light moving through the side branches under the canopy. Makes my plant Extra Happy!

i guess i posted here already but i dont remember. the easiest way ive found is to loop the string over the branch then slowly pull it down and tie it off with whatever method you choose. in the past ive put screws into the lip of my pot and tied the string to a screw, other times ive gotten a thick rubber band and put it on the pot rim then just pull the string under the rubber band.

What about transplanting to larger pots when LST'ing? Should LST'ing only be done if the plant is in it's final sized pot or can you just undo all the tiedowns, transplant, and then re-tie everything?

You can untie it all, then retie when you transplant.. it's low stress mannnn :D

The only thing that might be hard is getting to the bottom of the plant with all those low branches ;)

Just undo your lst's for the first few days till you see the roots shoot to the bottom and back up. When you know shes happy just get right back in tying her down. Youll be glad you did :) Try to do it RIGHT before the transplant spurt! :)

Let me throw my 2 cents in. You can LST from seedlings. Do this by setting the seedling to the side of your floros. This way the plant is forced to stretch to reach the light. Kept up the plant will grow at an angle, making it easier to tie down as it gets bigger.

i started by tieing down my ladies, then after a bit untied them and put my net in, kept pulling them under the net as time went on...

now my 20 ladies pretty much filled up my room wall to wall (10 x 16)

im a first time grower. i followed this guide, and OTHER guides on here and this is how it worked out for me.....

bent over for the first time. maybe too soon.......but thats ok

shoots started growing into tops

starting to fill out. you can see the actual "top" bent over on the far right of the plant

transplanted.....filling out even more. just kept tying the top down every time it grew straight up again

getting bigger

fuller...

now....at 32 days flowering

look at the bush i grew!!! notice the ties holding everything back. the actual top is to the far left of the pic

at 35 days flowering

many, many colas

a great shot of the "skeleton" of the plant. LST is as easy as what you see here. bend her over and watch as the side shoots grow tall

im currently at day 39 of flowering. as you can see......ive grown a ridiculous bush with basic LST training. thanks to everyone for your advice
