Looking for landrace / origin info on high Beta Caryophyllene (peppery) strains.

My most favorite taste and smell in the cannabis line is that peppery taste and smell. I believe that is from the Caryophyllene.

Leafly has a search engine that searches by terpene and with Caryophyllene checked it showed some familiar names. Girl Scout Cookies, Wedding Cake, Gelato and Apple Fritter??????? WTF?? Really?? Hot fuck, what have they done to cannabis. Fucking breakfast cereal names. LOL

OK, rant off and back to topic. I went to seedfinder.eu and traced those strains and the history of most of these strains is pretty much all over the place.

Anyway, I have read more than a few places that Caryophyllene is more predominate in Indica than Sativa. True or False?

I also read that the Eastern strains have more Caryophyllene terpene dominance, specifically India. True or False?

I see these names over and over in the linage charts. OG Kush, Big Bud, Cherry Pie, Northern Lights. I have grown all these, except the Cherry Pie and none had that peppery taste.

Just looking for any info you might want to share on the subject.

Thanks

ACE Seeds Malawi and Malawi hybrids like Zamaldelica.

And for New Caledonia they say "very high content of beta-caryophyllene". Haven't tried that one yet.

Some Hazes also have a peppery taste.

Sometimes I feel like that peppery burn is actually just high THC though.

β-Caryophyllene (Table 2) is generally the most common sesquiterpenoid encountered in cannabis (Mediavilla and Steinemann, 1997), wherein its evolutionary function may be due to its ability to attract insect predatory green lacewings, while simultaneously inhibiting insect herbivory (Langenheim, 1994). It is frequently the predominant terpenoid overall in cannabis extracts, particularly if they have been processed under heat for decarboxylation (Guy and Stott, 2005). Caryophyllene is common to black pepper (Piper nigrum) and Copaiba balsam (Copaifera officinalis) (Lawless, 1995). It is anti-inflammatory via PGE-1, comparable in potency to the toxic phenylbutazone (Basile et al., 1988), and an EO containing it was on par with etodolac and indomethacin (Ozturk and Ozbek, 2005). In contrast to the latter agents, however, caryophyllene was a gastric cytoprotective (Tambe et al., 1996), much as had been claimed in the past in treating duodenal ulcers in the UK with cannabis extract (Douthwaite, 1947). Caryophyllene may have contributed to antimalarial effects as an EO component (Campbell et al., 1997). Perhaps the greatest revelation regarding caryophyllene has been its demonstration as a selective full agonist at CB2 (100 nM), the first proven phytocannabinoid beyond the cannabis genus (Gertsch et al., 2008). Subsequent work has demonstrated that this dietary component produced anti-inflammatory analgesic activity at the lowest dose of 5 mg·kg−1 in wild-type, but not CB2 knockout mice (Gertsch, 2008). Given the lack of attributed psychoactivity of CB2 agonists, caryophyllene offers great promise as a therapeutic compound, whether systemically, or in dermatological applications such as contact dermatitis (Karsak et al., 2007). Sensitization reactions are quite rare, and probably due to oxidized product (Skold et al., 2006).

Ace seeds Thai, golden tiger, Thai dominant phenotypes. I have a very high caryophyllene male growing now.
Black pepper, mustard and vinegar. Like a funky spicy potato chip
IMG_20230929_212722.jpg

The key to terpenes is how they are paired with esters and aldehydes and thiols. Thiols ad important savory/musky/funky/spicy smells, esters add sweet and floral/tropical smells that modify existing terpenes in certain concentrations they lower the threshold of certain terpenes to express themselves, it's true for wines and it's true for cannabis. The golden tiger has Malawi in it which boosts the rotting/myrcene and thiol content which work in tandem as THC agonists.

get yourself a terp sample kit from crybaby organics and you will see that everything you have read about terpenes has been nonsense.

almost all the terps you see on a canna test smell NOTHING like weed.

weed smell comes from the compounds provided in the kit that are NOT terpenes. you and I have been reading stoner nonsense for too long.

Beta-caryophyelle isn't the pepper smell and orange and pine are about the only ones that smell like the name sounds. the weed smell is from other compounds, see for yourself.
www.paraphernaliasocialclub.com

one of the freaky things was the compund that brings the carrot smell to haze, it was a powder. smelled just like every Nevilles...

looks like the expansions are out of stock but the 63 terps are available.
Screen Shot 2023-10-01 at 11.23.54 AM.png

it's the ketones, aldehydes, phenolics, aldehyes, sulfur compunds that make weed smell.
the terpenes tell a much smaller story.

smelling the large kit they have was one of the best weed education things I've ever done in the 52 years since I started smoking.

caryophyllene is the only terpene which activates cb receptors too. It can function as a secondary indicator of potency for this reason.
For ex chen91 which was thx champ for a decade has tons caryophyllene

t's also present as the 3rd highest terpene in NYC brown haze types.

Myrcene/ocimene are 1/2 in both black and brown haze.

But brown has high levels of carolyohene 3rd black haze puts out more pinene.

Another factor to consider is carolyohene oxide. This rare terpene is only found in long flowering hazes
. Over the course of long bloom the carolyohene starts to oxidize. So we can use the plants conversion ratio to oxide as a measure of production capabilities.

Carolyohene and humulene are locked in a 2.5 to 1 ratio due to their synthase enzymes so where one is the other is sure to follow.

Khalifa Genetics' 80's Durban Poison Description

Logo Khalifa Genetics Khalifa Genetics 80's Durban Poison
80's Durban Poison

Place of Origin: Durban, South Africa (29°S)
Outdoor cultivation: Hot to cold climates
Yield: Medium to high
Flowering Time: 12 to 14 weeks
Aromas: Strong peppery aromas with a tinge of passion fruit
Effect: Enhances creativity, suppresses appetite, long-lasting

80’s Durban Poison From the north coast of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
Legendary strain from the northern coastal belt of Durban (South Africa).
Every individual has heard of the infamous Durban poison, well known for being a pure potent Sativa. But where does this strain come from? There are many stories around the origins of this African bush cannabis that nobody can actually place or prove. What we do know is that these genetics are worth saving, be it for preservation or hybridization this strain has it all.

Near Extinct Species
Our friend Ryan, passionate strain hunter from South Africa, obtained some old seeds from his dad’s best friend. That friend used to grow and sell Durban Poison back in the 1980’s. While going through the storage area of his house, he found old seeded Durban Poison buds. He then immediately gave the seeds (about 200 in total) to Ryan as he was aware of Ryan’s preservation work at the “Love Of Landrace” collective. Being over 30 years old, only 20 seeds popped and only 13 were able to break the ground.
This 80’s Durban Poison is therefore the real deal as it has never been hybridized with any modern strain. Growers can expect to see plants being very different from the Dutch Durban Poison.

Growth Pattern
Coming from a very humid area, the Durban Poison offers great mold resistance. Being very hardy and vigorous, it is also extremely pest-resistant.
This strain stands tall and wide, boasting a height of 4m (13ft) with branches reaching out in a creeper like structure. During flowering this strain gives off strong aromas of pepper with a tinge of passion fruit. Like most African Sativas this plant thrives planted in plain soil at the beginning of the spring season and has a flowering time of 18 weeks outdoors. The branches have small popcorn fox tailing buds leading to a large cola at the top of the branches. Due to the size of this long flowering Sativa you can expect high yields of a pure quality African Sativa.

Effect
80’s Durban poison is a mind numbing Sativa that enhances creativity and suppresses appetite. It lasts longer than your average smoke and boasts a THC reading of 16%.
Clear-headedness, creativity and also slight anxiety are the effects reported by most users.

Sandalwood

@Piff_cat has some strain work on this one? I think
Howd that church project come along NYC piff ? You were in a thread like that IIRC

Sure do wish that I had grabbed some of haze crosses that Sam did, along with some of the Pot of Gold.
Can't help but think that I would find some of the smells and flavors I long for within them.
Feel like I have been more than blessed with strong cannabis. At this point, I long for what I recall
as special. Such as the Blueberry that went in the Blue Dream that felt like it was the most prolific cross
that had ever been. Man that stuff felt really special, I sure did like the effect, flavor, potency - it had it
all.

Piffcoast first released terpene tests for black haze redline and brown a year before first piffcon.

This is ocimene as definitive trait sets NYC haze apart strongly correlated with cbga and thx. A haze plants ocimene content directly translates to haze church quality. The highest ocimene test result until recently w

as stoneguru silk s haze at .39 at first piffcon. But now I found Nigerian silk work beyond organics at 2 crazy high plants at .8 and 1.0 double the previous champ it's incredible

. 2 other terpenes are guiaol and alpha bisabol/santalene. Guiaol comes from pelo Santo very pine /incense. Theo create bisabol/santalene synthase enzymes in haze are identical to those found in sandalwood.

Colombian dom strains defo have the Spicy, black pepper

Also Haze A dominant varieties also , most Haze's have been bred away from that these days unfortunately but several seed companies including myself offer many strains with the Pepper and Spicy Terps.
Check out my strain Dankincense for any of you Pepper , Spicy Haze A dominant strain chasers and my whole line of Dankincense ( intense Pepper and Spices like the 90's). ( 50% off for any Icmag.com members who run Regular logs , 33% off for any members wether you post pics or not )

GSC and the desert Terps defo don't have the black pepper Terp 😆 , like chunkypigs says what you read online about Terps is normally alot of breeze ( these guys must have a incredible palate to find pepper in GSC etc)

The first blueberry i did was a freebie from an unknown breeder. Was exceptionally peppery and tbh pissed me off because i was expecting a berry smell lol. Dont lnow if was even real blueberry, doesnt seem like it when compared to the ones im growing now. Could be a different pheno tho. The effects were very pleasant and great for pain and inflammation

The Orissa gold from landracemafia had a fasciated phenotype with a bunch of ocimene and carolyohene. Profile is near identical to piff s2 clone.

The ratio of myrcene and ocimene can be influenced in ocimene favor. Keeping myrcene under .5 is desirable to avoid couch lock phenotypes. For example the first piff s2 test score from piffcoast had .09 ocimene and .9 myrcene but a sample this year same clone had .4 myrcene .25 ocimene .15 beta carolyohene. The cbga production also increased dramatically.

Genetics: Sri Lankan x original Thai (extinct) x Acapulco Gold x (South African x original Haze)
Type: 100% Sativa landrace genetics
Seed Type: Regular seeds
Flowering: 14 weeks
Yield: Good
Potency: High

With a cross of pure, legendary land-race Sativa genetics, M2 is the ultimate Sativa high reminiscent of the legendary landrace Sativas of the 60s and 70s. It is a perfect example of what a Sativa is supposed to feel like – energizing, social and intensely euphoric with no anxiety that is sometimes found in pure Sativas. M2 is perfect for the old-timers that miss those unmistakable, unique effects of the classic Sativas and for younger users that have not experienced the profound, blissful euphoria usually only found in landrace Sativas.

The most peppery landrace I know based from searches not growing is Khalifas Kerala Chellakutti, Hes out of stock but i asked and he should have next reproduction ready soon.

"Unlike many Kerala Cultivars, the Kerala Chellakutti does not have a fruity smell. The Aromas are reminiscent of a delicious blend of spice and pepper with an underlying Hazy flavor."

September 1st, 2023- Email: "To answer your question, yes, absolutely! We have started a new reproduction run almost 5 months ago and we are now almost done! This new reproduction has been a success so far and we were able to do it with many males and females in order to preserve genetic diversity.

The Kerala Chellakutti seeds should be available again in just about 1 and a half month.

Have a wonderful day,
Al & the Khalifa team"

Also look for varieties with big, long, and narrow leaves, they will have higher levels of auxins, which in turn result in generally higher level of sesquiterpenes. *This is purely speculation, and not scientifically proven information*

"Because both sesquiterpenes and auxins have tryptophan as precursor, there might be some degree of correlation in their levels. If the plant is actively producing a higher amount of tryptophan for sesquiterpene synthesis, this could potentially influence auxin levels and vice versa.

While tryptophan is a shared precursor, it's important to note that the specific pathways diverge after this point. Tryptophan is transformed through different enzymatic reactions and pathways to ultimately yield either auxins or sesquiterpenes."

When the plant transitions to flowering it has lower level's of auxins in theory having more avaiable tryptophan to support sesquiterpene synthesis.

I have this Orissa on the list on plants i'de like to eventually grow, such a unique terpene profile! look at how open the bud structure is , i've seen most strains high in ocimene exhibit a similiar open bud structure, might be something to that.
