While I am not very active on these boards, I have in the past been very involved in other online forums. Many of which I have seen transition from small forum only sites to expensive to run, all encompassing forums with galleries, chat etc. These are my opinions:

Sending in seeds for auctions isn't viable. How can you gaurantee that what you are bidding on from a member contribution is going to be what you get? I would like to think that everyone here is honest, but we know that isn't the case and can't be with the number of members. Their is already enough heated discussion about the lineage of seeds from REPUTABLE companies.

While I like the communal aspect of the idea, I believe that the security issues would simply be too great. I have too much to lose to send seeds across the pond just to be a member of a website.

This brings us to how can we bring in revenue to keep the site running? I don't have that big of an issue with the site being run for a modest profit, it does take work.

If seed sales through the various IC related venues are'nt enough to keep us up, what options does this lead us to?

Instead of making it a pay site, which diminishes our input and the free trade of information, I support the privitization of certain aspects of our site. For example, all users may have 10 pictures, but only Supporting Members would have access to chat, and their gallery space would be bigger. To be a Supporting Member, the fee would be nominal, say $20/yr or $50 for life.

Thats all folks.

Surely a yr's supporting membership online should cost approx. the same as a yr's sub (12 monthly issues) to the printed IC magazine?

Just an idea, although submitted a tad late...:rasta:

Peace

I think its a great idea, but I have a little bit of a twist on your idea. Since not everyone has worthwhile let alone known genetics to donate, I think members should have a few options as follows.

1. Donate a pack of seeds for auction ever so often which you of coarse would decide how often a pack needs to be donated in order to stay a paying member.

2. A monthly, 3 month, 6 month, 12 month paying memberships, with the prices being perhaps. $9.99, $24.99, $39.99, $64.99 maybe even a lifetime membership for lets say $250.00

I think there should still be limited access for free so people can get an idea of what the site has to offer before joining, also paying and/or seed donating members should be allowed to have an avatar thats more along the lines of 200 x 200 and 100, 150 kb memory wise.

Becoming an ICMAGAZINE (online) Subscriber.....Please Help....

I.C.Magazine online has come along way in the 4 years since it was launched here on the internet. We have seen it grow expotentially with many interested and interesting members joining us to share their joys in growing and using the plant that brings us together creating a community with a common interest.

As the site has grown so to has the costs of keeping it here for all to use for free. The server and bandwidth costs have now got to a level that I now find difficult to cover from my own pocket.

To be able to upgrade the site and keep it current and exciting with new features also requires funding to employ a technical professional to accomplish this...

So to off-set these costs I have decided to ask for ICMAG Supporters to subscribe to this site.

The ICMAG Supporters once subscribed will have the title 'I.C MAG SUPPORTER' next to their user handle (just like I do have now)... and access to a subscribers forum where upon the request of the subscribers I can make sub-forums for those that might want them for any particular related topic.....

ICMAG Supporters will also have the opportunity to aquire rare and unusual genetics in seed form thru special privaledges to purchase pre-releases and rare varieties from various breeders and these 'specials' and how to get them will be advertised only in the subscribers area......along with other offers not open to the regular membership.....Also each Supporter will have up to 1 whole gigabyte of gallery space....far more than the current 150 megabyte limit as a regular member.....

For many members the beauty of the subscribers forums will be that they will be troll free and a place on the site that you can get together with other supporters without the rude interruptions and interferances that we see on the regular forums from members that are just here to cause trouble and disscontent.......

So if you wish to help ICMAGAZINE.COM.....the best way to do it right now is to subscribe.......Subscription is completely voluntary and hopefully I can find enough of you willing to help out to make a sizable dent in the costs of keeping the site up and running and here for all to use.

Subscription costs will be $250 for lifetime subscribers membership... $100 usd for 1 year.....$75 usd for 6 months......or $50 usd for 3 months.........for conversions into other currencies go to www.xe.com ICMAGAZINE will accept any major currency.......

Please send your subscription along with your ICMAG.COM user handle (so that we can activate your subscribers account) to :I.C.Magazine, Unit#2. 22 Eden Street, Kingston-Upon-Thames, Surrey, KT1 1DN, U.K. (United Kingdom)......

*when sending cash or Money Order (only) for your subscription to ensure delivery please use an 'overnite' service.......if you use the regular post there is a very slim chance a letter may get lost......make your M.O. payable to 'ICM'....

....as soon as we receive your subscription we will activate your ICMAG supporters account.

Thank-you for your kind indulgence....

No one's asking anyone to leave the site sup. Just asking for those that can afford it to donate to help with the cost of keeping it going.....

less bs...more moderation...

I'm not talking moderation like you think of the moderation that we have here. I'm talking more about auditors that go through old meaningless threads and tag them for deletion. Admin could have final say in what is to be actually removed, but the auditors could do alot of the leg work. There are alot of trusted folks that would contribute to that cause. I sure as shit would. lol

if it's not mj related its deleted.

That solves alot of issues.

A paid members only area would be an oasis from the noise. There would still be the same number of members and posts, no increase in traffic or bandwidth really. Just a reorganization of sub forums.

Those that can't afford to pay can still have access to all of the information that is available now...

Those that can contribute by either buying 'x' amount of dollars worth of seeds through sb/sb or if you don't by seeds you have to send in a membership fee.

I'm all for that...

This is my favorite so far.

I have a few points of my own, pics are a valuable tool on this server even though I don`t have any lol.

JJScorpio is right, as usual, pictures take alot of bandwith, I would think setting a maximum sized gallery for new members and a full gallery and special forum priviledge for those who donate seeds or buy branded IC logo stuff or pay a donation.

The troll factor is why I like the segregated forum, it won`t penalize the broke memebers because they can still post some pics, just not a 50 pages gallery like some.

Also there are tons of useless repeat threads that each mod could file and filter to lighten the server load, I would be happy to participate at making that a reality.

I think the elemntal part of this project is A to fund this SAFE refuge GN and DG has provided us with, safe is sooooo important as we have seen with OG.

Second we can take it as an opportunity to weed out the useless multiple user name having trolls from the peeps here to grow, GROW being the operative word,

Peace
S

swampdank plans to donate just as soon as the funds are available from my financial aid check. how bout that? the u.s. govt donating to support as well. LOL! checks are issued in july, my donation will follow asap. i cant wait to have the logo under my name. good idea guys. just make sure ample time is allowed for everybody to round up the cash. im in. i love the idea of a serious forum for only supporters. i also think rez has a good idea with sbay priviledges going to supporters before the gen pub. back scratching works in all businesses.
