That's a great question goat cheese! Hmm after several attempts at answering I get a TILT regardless of which angle I try to attack it from. I'm at loss. I'm not sure why! It's easy enough to see the difference between Sam's Skunk#1 with his clearly defined perameters and goals and Toms lines with TILT TILT TILT TILT! As soon as I wanna say Toms goals are not clearly defined I glitch! His goals are clearly defined. He might not try to steer it other than away from sexual instability but I imagine he has a pretty clear idea of what he would like to see in the next gen. Even if it's only to maintain a certain amount of variability. Which seem like it might be much harder to do imho. And isn't selecting the group to be bred, even randomly, count as a selection? Huh...wha!?!?

Does a line that's inbred to produce uniformity deserve to be called IBL more than a line that's inbred to maintain variability? Or visa-versa? Does IBL have to mean anything other than the line has been inbred?

I tell you what though, I'm more than a little nervous speaking on either Sam's or Tom's breeding practices! looking stupid isn't that big a deal but I prefer it be a surprise! Haha

I was raised to take things slow, go with the flow and to shut my fkn mouth when I don't know. I clearly don't know,So.........

Good question though goat, You got me stumped!:tiphat:

Tom had a thread (sticky) in his forum, before it disappeared, about a Deep Chunk seed run. I believe it was from 2008 or 2009, possibly the last seed run he did. From my recollection it was an open pollination consisting of 144 females pollinated by 20 males, the seed was harvested and mixed well for the offering, and was said to be a preservation run.

Not sure how many of these runs he did prior but I don’t think he ever added other genetics (outcrossed) and it’s probably not known what was done to it prior to him obtaining it. I believe he felt it was a land race. The other variable is how many did he start with in the first place.

He did mention about culling a few plants here and there, mostly duds, runts, intersex, etc. (can’t remember the criteria exactly) and in a sense I suppose you could call that some selective pressure. But the main point here is he wasn’t trying to lock down traits, he was trying to preserve as many alleles in the line as possible.

If Hazeman made seeds from seed from Tom, calling them F2, at least you know what the path is. What you don’t know is how many plants he worked with and what the selection criteria was.

I may have saved that thread somewhere but not sure how I saved it. I’ll see if I can find it.
