Looking for an 18" wide-spectrum bulb...

Hello!
I am curious if there is such a thing as an 18-inch, wide-spectrum light bulb available. I'd like to attempt growing things like onions, celery, and ginger indoors, but those Aerogarden kits are expensive and too small to grow the things I want in my kitchen. I have counter space under wall cabinets that can accommodate 18" light fixtures underneath. While that size fixture is available, I can't seem to find plant bulbs in that size that are suitable for vegetable growth. The one I did find seemed to indicate it is only meant for keeping decorative houseplants alive.
Any links, ideas?
Thanks!

Depending on your budget you could get an Amare Technologies Solar Spec 100= $265

Too much?

Buy a 2-4 bulb vanity fixture (~$20) + led globes @ $15

Mix cool white and warm white

If you had $220usd to spend IMHO there is absolutely no better fixture/lamp than the 315w CMH series (http://advancedtechlighting.com/cdmmw.htm)

- Very close spectrum to the sun
- Lowish power
- Lamp is roughly 30cm~ i.e. 12"

Only downside is that if you're in 120v land you'll have to run a step up converter which shouldn't be too much of an issue acquiring one from amazon/ebay/etc

Good luck on your garden :)

Thanks for the suggestions. We just spent a bunch getting my closetdreams set up, so I'm looking for low-cost solutions for this fleeting "entertainment experience" in the kitchen idea. I found cheapie 12" grow lights that fit in some under cabinets fixtures that were already in the house. I've been putting sprouted wheatgrass there for the cats, and am experimenting with regrowing onion and celery cores. The wheatgrass usually did well, but it had a short lifespan due to me using growing methods for people who plan to juice the grass, and of course, the cats enjoying it.

This is the counter/cabinet space where I'd like to put the new fixture for the veggies. I have a large, shallow, circular planter - but need a light fixture that won't be too hacky looking. This spot is a very visible place in my house, and I'd rather the planter be the center of attention. Which Is why I thought a plain ol' flourescent stick fixture and a grow bulb would look best. It would hide under the cabinet and give plenty of room for the celery to get tall.

Hmmm. the pictures didn't post. First time I've tried doing that on in these forums. I'll try again...

This is the celery hearts sprouting under the 12" bulbs:

Hope it worked this time.
