Rick James & the pizza!

Rick James & the pizza!

For a few years Rick James (rockstar) was a convict at Folsom. When the 3rd watch Lieutenant found out he went and asked him "Are you really Rick James? Sing me a song.
His response was "I'm a pro, I don't sing for free!"
Lt."Well how much to sing a song?"
"I haven't had any pizza in a long time"
The next evening just before final lockup, the Lt had a small pizza delivered to the front gate (it was not uncommon for a shift of staff to have pizza delivered), and went & got a guitar from the band room.
Like a scene rght out of a movie, Rick James performed a 3 or 4 song set from his stage show, while about 200-300 convicts hung on the cell block railings. By all accounts he "Killed it"! To a standing ovation!

Well, no good deed goes unpunished & one convict who didn't get any pizza & didn't like the Lt, turned him in. It's against the rules to give a convict anything.
At first they fired the Lt, but I did see him back a few months later, demoted to a rank&file officer!
Carefull who you share pizza with!

That's life in Folsom prison

Unfortunately not. Actually quite the opposite.

I believe, one day, one of Bubbles new celly's did try to stab him out on the yard.
But, the gun tower officer had no choice, celly had the knife & was the agressor. Officer shot the celly!
Bubbles healed up quickly from the knife wounds

The Black Hands!

The Black Hands!

The gun tower officers are a different breed at Folsom. Because they actually have to do their jobs a lot (like, daily!) & the roofs of the cell blocks looked like swiss cheese! There were shots fired every day, someplace at Folsom.
Some of the tower officers are quite reviered & feared by the convicts.
One officer was specially feared & avoided, they called him "The Black Hands"!
He always wore black leather gloves & would sit just inside the tower window with just his "Black Hands" sticking out. He had such a keen eye & was such a good shot (and to hear the convicts tell it, a cold blooded killer!). If they had anything planned for the day, & they saw the Black hands, they called it off!
The "Black hands" are quite a deterrant to crime at Folsom

Tested every day!

Tested every day!

You get tested every day by the convicts.
They have nothing better to do.

Tough to make it 25 years, with the constant stress!

The annual staff assault rate at Folsom is 30%. There is about a 1-in-3 chance each year of being assaulted by a convict.

No I didn't see the Rick James show, I heard about it from about 4 or 5 different convicts & one officer that were there.

P.S. I do believe Bubbles survived his time and was released, he's loose on the streets of San Francisco!:

Merry *UCKING Christmas!

Merry *UCKING Christmas!

My first Christmas Eve working at Folsom I was still green, I decided to throw caution to the wind & bring my crew, Christmas cupcakes!
I brought cupcakes for my whole 40 man crew.
I would stand at the entrance door to the factory each morning & take their ID cards & count the convicts.
That day, I put a small table just behind me & set the box full of cupcakes on it.

The first convict thru the door that morning was the forklift driver. He spotted the cupcakes and said "Wow, are these cupcakes for us?!"

I said yes, Merry Christmas............

He reached down and scooped them all up and walk on!

I was astounded! I didn't know how to react to something like that! I just stood there.
For the remainder of the day, every time I saw him, he had a cupcake in his mouth.

That's when I first realized they live in a different world, Merry *ucken Christmas!

3 weeks of retirement!

3 weeks of retirement!

About 6 or 7 years ago I had the joyous opportunity to attend a good friend & co-workers retirement party after a long carreer inside the prison, having narrowly escaping several serious incidents. It was a great day!
Unfortunatly, I attended his funeral 3 weeks later!
He enjoyed only 3 weeks of retirement. Stress has it's way of catching up with you!

Life's too short people!
Live a little for yourself, every day, you never know how many you have left

Prison guards shoot two inmates during Folsom riot

Prison guards shoot two inmates during Folsom riot

This incident happened a couple months ago, but I'd have to say it sounds like the work of the Black Hands

This is life in Folsom prison, I'm so glad I'm retired from all that sh*t!

December 7, 2011 | 4:05pm

California prison guards Wednesday shot at least two inmates at a maximum-security facility near Sacramento as officers tried to quell a riot involving some 50 prisoners, officials said.

In all, at least nine inmates were taken to Sacramento-area hospitals for treatment of stab wounds, gunshot wounds and blunt-force trauma after the melee erupted at 12:30 p.m. at California State Prison-Sacramento in Folsom, about 20 miles east of the Capitol.

The condition of the injured inmates and the cause of the disturbance were not immediately known, said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The cause of the disturbance is "under investigation," Thornton said.

Sgt. Lavance Quinn, another prison spokesperson, said the incident occurred at Folsom's main maximum-security exercise yard. It was quickly contained by guards using pepper spray, rubber projectiles and Mini-14 rifles, Thornton said.

Quinn said a couple of prison guards who responded to the incident suffered minor injuries. But "none of the injuries were as a result of an inmate-on-officer assault," he said.
Thornton said officers are allowed to use deadly force when it is required to prevent themselves or others from being physically harmed, but the shootings will be investigated to make sure they were justified.

The prison has been placed on a "modified program," which means that inmates have limited movement and are essentially confined to their cells, officials said.

The facility is primarily used to house about 2,800 maximum-security inmates serving long sentences and those who have proved to be difficult to manage at other institutions, officials said.

Baja Stress Relief

Baja Stress Relief

For many years (& up until all the violence in Mexico started a few years ago), we would take long vacations, beach camping in Baja. My attempt at escaping & relieving some stress. We tried to go at least twice a year
I have a 4x4 truck & camper & carried 2 kayaks on top. We would explore back roads all over Baja, & we camped on many secluded & remote beaches. Found many great camping spots.
The lobsters were so plentiful we practally lived on them. My buddies son caught some big bugs freediving from the yaks
I sure miss those trips!

Baja fishing

Baja fishing

The fishing was really good down there also. We would fish from the beach or the kayaks, but if we happened to reach Cabo or La Paz, I would rent a boat & I could go after bigger fish
I sure miss those Baja trips!

Pacman!

Here's what the Folsom Prison License Plate Factory looks like inside. This is where every California license plate is made.

Convicts embossing the plates on 150ton presses. You wanta keep you fingers out of there!

Take a guess why the convicts named press #2, "Pacman"?

Greystone Chapel

Greystone Chapel

Here's a shot of the main yard at Folsom.

The building to the left is the Greystone Chapel that Johnny Cash sings about in the song "Greystone Chapel".

The building up high on the right, up on top of the hill, is the license plate factory

Johnny Cash
Greystone Chapel lyrics

(Glen Sherley)
Inside the walls of prison my body may be but my Lord has set my soul free
There's a greystone chapel here at Folsom a house of worship in this den of sin
You wouldn't think that God had a place here at Folsom
But he saved the souls of many lost men
Now there's greystone chapel here at Folsom
Stands a hundred years all made of granite rock
It takes a ring of keys to move here at Folsom
But the door to the House of God is never locked
Inside the walls of prison my body may be but my Lord has set my soul free
[Guitar instrumental]
There are men here that don't ever worship
There are men here who scoff at the ones who pray
But I've got down on my knees in that greystone chapel
And I thank the Lord for helpin' me each day
Now there's greystone chapel here at Folsom
It has a touch of God's hand on ever stone
It's a flower of light in a field of darkness and it's givin' me the strenght to carry on
Inside the walls of prison my body may be but my Lord has set my soul free

The Intergated Yard Policy

The Intergated Yard Policy

Sometimes the best ideas on paper, just don't work out as planned.

A few years ago, the good people in charge of California Dept Corrections thought they had a great idea, "Let's intergate!"

They penned the "Intergated Yard Policy" aka the Gladiator days

This policy was supposed to improve life in the prisons. It requires the convicts all be released at the same time on the yard, despite known enemies. Before this, staff would keep known gang members off the yard at the same time. We all knew this was a bad idea from the start.
What resulted was a blood bath!
As soon as known gang members see each other they attack. The fights were guaranteed. The poor tower officers were required by their Post Orders, to shoot.
I know several tower officers who transferred away from gun tower assignments because they got tired of shooting inmates each day. Day after day after day. It was "ON" as soon as they opened the gates each morning. The bodies were dropping every day. The officers say it was "shooting fish in a barrel"!

So much for "Grand ideas"!

Here's one of the few articles I could find that mentions the Intergated Yard Policy. They've done a good job of keeping this fiasco quiet.

doublejj
P.S. Please note; the only ones ever brought to trial were, line staff!

From a paper by Corey Weinstein, MD,

California's Integrated Yard Policy

"Between 1988 and 1995, CDCr ran a program called the Integrated Yard Policy. Rival gang members were deliberately mixed together on exercise yards. The prisoners had to fight, and fight well or be punished by their own gangs.
When the fights occurred, guards were required to fire first anti-riot guns and then assault rifles at the combatants. At least seventy prisoners were killed and hundreds wounded. The program of beating prisoners down into the concrete with gunfire resulted in bigger, stronger gangs with new martyrs and heroes.
This mayhem and violence was added to the prison social system by departmental policy. No CDCr official has ever been held accountable or even assigned responsibility for what was know as the "gladiator days". The Line staff brought to trial by the U.S. Department of Justice avoided criminal convictions by proving that they were just following orders."
