LET'S CLONE IN DIRT, WTF!

Hi there Highcountry

Where I live, the humidity stays high all the time with very light winds, if any at all. When I clone, I get white mold nearly every time. So to combat it, there nearly has to be a slight breeze flowing across the cuttings. I see you mist 2 times a day and place a dome on them, that would be a breeding ground for white mold around here.

I took a few cuts friday and put them in dirt. they are in an open box on top of the fridge. 3 of them immediately (within 2 hours) limped right over, they are still that way, the rest look nice and healthy. Ive got them in mouth rinse cups with some drain slits cut in the bottom. The soil is mostly composted cow manure.

I have terrible luck with cloning, they take forever (over a month) and most just won't root at all. I've had decent luck with rockwool, but its such a pain to keep them moist, they dry out quick. When I use dirt they rarely need watering until they die.

At this point in my cloning career, I've realized my only reliable source of new plants comes from seeds. Which sucks, because they take longer to grow big and there is always slight variation in phenos.

Hi everybody

High Country, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

I use a very similar method for clonning fig trees very successfully. But as I am very shabby and stingy I use transparent plastic bags in order to keep high humidity.

I will try with my Sumatran Tuk-Tuk female that I am trying to clone now just in plain water.

Thank you.

Best Regards.

Good on you ahortator, keep it cheap, plastic bags work, some people hate domes, ask Freezerboy, he hates them, but I use them....go figure. Each to their own I guess. I think keeping those temps at 24C or 75F is the main thing....and trim those clones well....and don't play with them...give them time.

I like trying different cloning methods, some work, some don't.

I like to keep it very simple. you can't get much more simple than cloning in dirt, no clonex.

And look after your mums.

How about doing a control test, some with dome, some without. I've never had mould issues where I live in Australia, it's either stinking hot or freezing cold. But I can keep the air temps stable.

I muck around with cloning because the strain I grow is clone only, I never had a male. I kept a female 12 years ago and have kept the strain going, full on indica. She's gorgeous, full on female, never hermies, clones easily.

I reversed it with colloidal silver to get feminized seed and that is all that remains after a severe spider mite attack. So far the CS plants are true to the original.

So cloning is something I do and have no problems with...I have to...apart from CS seed. It's the only way I can keep this strain going.

I might just be lucky, but I reckon I could clone a match stick....I can get a flowering leaf to put out roots WTF!

Try a different method, experiment a bit and one day you'll get a 100$ strike rate.

Nice work mate, I just done a few clone experiments using different mediums... Also found soil cloning to be spot on with very little trouble maintenance free too!

Cheers

im ur biggest fan HC your style and dedication is great and that strain is pure love she keeps on giving its good to see how mother nature provides...

awesome job

cloning in dirt

.I used to have terrible luck cloning in the grow cubes and other things. I had some root powder I cut the stem at a steep angle then scrape the other side with the razor blade edge. get stem juicy then put in the powder. use the large party cups. I prefer clear because you can see how well you are doing.I use garden soil that has all the nutes you will need untill time to flower then I use the bat poop. My luck now is probably 85% . I have too many clones by the way.

great thread, High Country, thanks!

however, i gave this a shot with 24 clones and only 3 are alive. yea i cried. and of the 3, only 1 actually looks healthy. they all started dying around day 7 (7, wtf!)

they all started to turn dark brown, like rot. the only differences between our setups, that i see, are i used red cups instead of hiko trays since I couldn't find them & temp

it's been really hot here, like 90+, so my guess is that + the humidity of the dome (misted twice a day) is what killed them.

I made more clones & moved them to a cooler part of the house (70-80f), wish me luck

Yeah mate sounds like that high heat is what got your clones
Best of Luck with the new round :good:

very nice thread. i like coarse sand to clone, but soil worked well for u! surprised none succumbed to fungal or bacterial infection.

agar would be much, much harder.

b00m is right, those high temps will cook your clones in no time and it will be a horrible slimy death...sends shivers through my spine...poor little clones. Try and keep those temps stable and all will be fine.

This thread is inspiring to me, I've never tried clones so will give it a go. I imagine your nights get pretty cold around now do you have reverse cycle air conditioner for heating or some other way to control it? I know you said no heat mats so how do you keep it constant?

These clones were taken in early November. That is the lead up to summer in these parts and the temps are warming up. So basically I didn't bother with bottom heat. At this time my house is a pretty stable 24C or 75F so no need to heat them. In the middle of winter it's a different story.

Happy cloning jarmon.

I knew I was missing something, should have checked the date. Will try it in spring before it gets too hot.

Whats going on HC? Any grows in the works?

Kind of on hold at the moment. I'm working in an iron ore mine in WA and can be drug tested anytime. So at the moment I'm not touching the stuff. I get a week off every couple of weeks and come home for a bit of R&R. So i can do without it no worries.

Mind you I do have a little project in mind.

I tried all kinds of cloning and finally put some in store bought potting soil and they all thrived!! I feel like a pro now! Peace

That's great to hear...sometimes the simple things in life are the easiest. No need to over complicate the process.
