Andrew Wood
In 1983 Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard joined a band known as Green River. They came out with a total of three EP\'s, then disbanded in 1988. Steve Turner(former GR guitarist), and GR vocalist Mark Arm formed Mudhoney, the definition of grunge which still exists today. Stone and Jeff joined singer Andrew Wood to form a new band called Mother Love Bone. While Green River had been more punkish, MLB was much more oriented towards classic rock. They rocked on for a while, writing loads of songs. With a record deal secured, they were ready to release their first album, Apple, in 1990. Noone knows if MLB would have had as profound of an effect on music as the grunge movement, and we never will, for just before the release of Apple, Wood overdosed on heroin and was found dead. The album was eventually released, but it found little success as the singer was no longer there to help form their sound. Mother Love Bone was disbanded. Stone and Jeff kept on playing, and eventually joined with other musicians to form a band that would go on to become the biggest in the world: Pearl Jam. Soon after, Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell went to Stone and Jeff to ask them about recording a tribute. They accepted, and together with Eddie Vedder(Pearl Jam), and Matt Cameron(Soundgarden, Pearl Jam), they created the album Temple Of The Dog. It was named after a line in the MLB song \'Man Of Golden Words\'. It enjoyed success, and the members went back to their respective bands. Later on, a new record label put every bit of Mother Love Bone material they could squeeze into a single disc(77 minutes), and released it as Stardog Champion, named for the second track. It included a song from the Singles soundtrack, Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns. It was originally simply Crown Of Thorns, but was combined with Chloe Dancer to create an epic.

Hopefully Andrew Wood and his old band will someday get the respect they deserve, but not anytime soon it seems.

Rumoured to have sold his soul to the devil for his musical ability. Looked like a devil too, a rep he carefully massaged and managed.

Still holds the record for hand span on a violin. Could play notes that are not physically possible for 99.99999% of musicians.

Physical freak, combined with musical prodigy. Awesome combo.

There exist written accounts of Liszt concerts, where he'd emerge on stage to throngs of screaming women, sit on his bench, and remove his gloves, one finger at a time. He'd then toss the gloves into the audience, where chaos would ensue. Beatlemania, anyone?
Yup. Lisztomania - he was the Elton John / Tom Jones of a simpler time.

Roger Daltry played him in Lisztomania, a movie by Ken Russell. It was crap.

Paganini apparently had a 17+ inch thumb-to-little-finger span, and could fret ALL the positions on the violin without moving his wrist or hand.

On March 19, 1982, the band was headed to a festival in Orlando, Florida, when they stopped at the owner of the bus company's house, Jerry Calhoun, in Leesburg, Florida after driving much of the night. The driver, Andrew Aycock, took Rhoads and hairdresser Rachel Youngblood on a flight in a Beechcraft Bonanza he had taken without permission. Apparently, during the flight, an attempt was made to "buzz" the tour bus where the other band members were sleeping. They succeeded three times but the fourth time it went horribly wrong. The right wing clipped the right side of the tour bus by accident and crashed into Jerry Calhoun's nearby mansion completely destroying the front. Nobody in the mansion was hurt. Rhoads, age 25, was killed instantly, as were Aycock, 36, and Youngblood, 58. It was found later that Aycock had some amount of cocaine in his system; Rhoads's toxicology test revealed no illicit drugs.

Randy's funeral was held at the First Lutheran Church in Burbank, CA, where he attended as a child. He was interred at Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino, California (where his grandparents are also buried). At the time, Randy's mother was living in Burbank. The Rhoads family and many fans gather there on the anniversary of his death as well as his birthday to pay tribute and celebrate his life.
