leaving lights of for 10 days

I have a rather small grow box. It is 5 cubic feet and I run between 150 and 250 watts of light. Right now it is just two 42 watt CFL and one 50 watt HPS. I have 10 plants each in ~about 3 liters of dirt. I dare say they almost drink a gallon a day at 12/12. I plan to rig up a gravity fed system with two 5 gallon buckets on top of the box and a system of fish air tube hosing and valves to deliver the water. It may just be a continuous drip, or I might make some complex contraption involving a digital timer and a water pump and a system of safeguards to prevent flooding. Once I finish my lighting system, I will have 3 x 50 HPS in DIY cool tubes with another 98 watts of T5. (2 x 460 nm 24" bare bulbs hanging in the under story and a 24" purple bulb shinning down from above with a reflector and a 24" 420 nm actinic shinning down from above with another reflector). I expect my watering needs will be about 2 gallons a day. I plan to add a dehumidifier long before that and perhaps recycle the water from this into the gravity feed system. I'm not sure if dehumidifier water contains lead so I'll need to get it tested, and if it does; I'll need to add a Culligan filter between the dehumidifier and the 5 gallon bucket. If that doesn't get all the lead, Then I suppose the dehumidifier will just drain to a bucket or pump into the bathroom sink. All this just so I can leave them for 3 or 4 days.

Now for option #2
1) replace HID lighting with a few small CFLs. (like one 42 watt 2700K for every 400 watt HPS)
2) water plants liberally before you go.
3) minimize ventilation and maximize humidity.
4) hope for the best.

Now that I've said all that, just reduce the lighting and rig up a drip system. Keep the plants at 12/12 and reduce the wattage of lighting, but try to keep similar color. My idea is that they will just think it has been cloudy for a spell.

the timer would allow you to turn your lights off for 12 hours and will then turn them back on for 12 hours, automatically. Therefore, best insurance you can buy. Right?

Yeah, even fish need timers.

Yeah, even fish need timers.

I don't know why, but we did it manually for about 15 years before we put our fish tank light on a timer. They like it. They get about 14 hours of light year round. They will not eat after the light switches off. One time, I just left em for a 4 day trip. Poor fellas. Their light had switched off for that "day" by the time I got back. It took em about 20 minutes to wake up to the point where they were interested in food. And they were starving! They get fed twice a day now, ever since. The "automatic" fish food feeders don't work that great with flakes. Goldfish pellets, sure. But yeah, timer and light are the 2 essentials for clandestine indoor grow ops.

Hi new to the forum and read your post. Get a timer like everybody has suggested for the lights. Then consider the best way to keep em wet for the time your away....

Do your pots have holes in the bottom for drainage? If so invest in a childrens paddling pool or something similar and fill it with enough water to just below the correct ec level. Better then leaving em in the dark, the root system can feed from the bottom of the pot.

Just an idea never tried it but I remeber my parents leaving houseplants in the bathtub with water in when we went on holiday as kids.

All the best,

SM

Just use enough light to keep them alive. Maybe put a small fluorescnt or incandescent light in there to keep the cycle going. Just enough light and they will just chill while you are away.

I didnt bother reading all the other posts on the 2nd page but i would advise using fluoros for those 10 days and keep about 8 inches to a foot above your plant and make something were it waters your plant automatically if you arent already using a hydro system, this shouldnt hurt your buds, because i flowered my plant and decided they were too spindly and veged them again under 24/7 for 2 weeks and just ended up taking clones and they turned out perfectly healthy. Whatever you choose good luck.
