leaves curling

got a problem with both plants, the leaves are curling inwards, they're still bright green and the curled edges are crispy, but not dead! thinking it might be heat (i only used 2 cfls on them a about 2inches away) i turned one off and moved the other about 4-5inches away. the tops of the leaves, near the curling have gone extra shiny, like they have been polished. unnafected areas are a matt green.

would just like conformation or any ideas whats causing it.

More cfl's is good. What and how much are you feeding the seedlings? Soil ph and what is in the soil? Directions for testing are below in my signature. Add other details to help get a better answer. I don't see perlite. That's not good.

well these cfls get HOT, you cant hold the tube cos it will burn you.

the seedlings have not been fed. the soil is compost from a 99p growbag. nothing added to it at all. ph not tested, but i have tested it in previous grows and it was acceptable. no perlite, i let them dry out then give em a soaking.

from experience plants dont need mothering. and atm im thinking ive had bad advice as to how much heat these can tolerate, cfls shouldnt be almost touching the leaves as when a leaf grows and touches it, it gets burnt.

Looks like some heat stress I have done this personally. At that age the moving of the CFL's will help. There does appear more than heat stress though. This is just a guess so check it out first. Do your plants have a phosphorus problem also?

well i looked in the sticky and none of the fert problems seemed applicable. and i did have the cfls very close.

the last time i grew, several years ago i never had the lights as close as this time. and i grew them from start to finish in the same type of compost, the only fert being weak tomato food once a week and i never had any problems with the plants at all.

well the 5 finger leaves have started so they'll be full size in a couple of days and hopefully with the extra distance from the lights i shouldnt have this problem again.

You are growing them in mud well outside their ideal ph range. They need soil airation in the form of perlite and you need to get a ph meter.

they have soil airation, this isnt mud and the pic was taken after watering. and ph will be fine for now, only when feeding will it need adjusting slightly as i use mild compost and mild ferts.
