good question. I am korean and i would like to know.
the closest thing i know to a korean strain is the lavender. which part of the genetics is a strain called big skunk korean. but i never heard any info on that strain.
from what i remember reading the breeder of lavender went on a question and found many different strains from different areas of the world and made lavender with the big skunk korean strain. but iono.
well from talking to my dad about drugs in korea during his time makes me believe that there are no landrace korean strains. he told me in his days if u were caught with marijuana u would go straight to jail with no trial. thats how harsh the laws were.
I spoke with someone who was in korea for a long time in the military. He said he always use to get weed TO the koreans and they loved it, but I cant imagine where it came from?
Very strict. A Korean friend just finished riding out a 10 year statute of limitations; essentially a self-imposed exile, on distribution... he did not see his extended family for a decade. The jail term would have been far worse.
All right I talked to one of my buddies last night and he says that it's VERY rare for cannabis that is consumed in Korea to be grown there- more often, it is flown in from other countries, such as the US. He does not know of any native/local comm strains- anyone growing them is as silent as the tomb- but I've got another guy I'm planning on seeing in the coming week and he's more likely to have some 411.
Laws are extremely harsh. You can be imprisoned simply for having it in your blood. Not the ideal place to grow. That being said, I along with a few noble gardeners did our share to green up the place. Here are a few pics for you to enjoy.
I made a couple seed runs in 2007. Since, I'm by no means a hog I spread the wealth. Begining in 2008 there have been hobby gardeners throughout the penninula helping to green things up.
Unfortunately, the plants are not indigineous to Korea. Some were mixed seeds I brought along with me. And the slimmer ones were seeds brought back from Cuba.
However, if I'm not mistaken, I think I remember someone posting on reeferman's boards that plants from the Mazaar I sharif region made their way through Korea at one point in time. I can't confirm that. And as far as I the cultivars you are after... well they're in all probability not in existence anymore. That is if they ever were.
In any event, if your quest for indigienous strains yields you further insight please share your results.
Taking note on Korea´s, both southern & northern geographical location it would be akward to think there isnt any cannabis growing out in the wilds IMHO!
Of course we have even smaller amount of wisdom of the Northern part for obvious reasons, but im sure there are must be some tribe/village/community that grows and has been doing it for awhile
If not indigenous growing, then at least organized crime plantations...
Dont know about Korea´s that much, but the image I have got about the countrys is that you can stay quite easily above the law with right connection & $$$$$ bill ya´´´!
Stinkyattic: Great to hear your friend is back and is still living, that said, no one can put pricetag on the lost freedom
I wouldn't be so worried about that: I popped his Lavender seeds recently...all germed with no problems....alot faster than some other strains I might add....really vigorous.....and rapid growth so far.
Most of the cannabis in Korea probably comes from Japan, especially those areas overrun with wild "chronic" hemp that consistently tests at 3.5+% thc (if you think that's low, take into consideration most hemp plants produce 1% thc or far less.
This kind of strong wild weed would probably be the only stuff that could survive in Korea, considering the government's scariness, they'd need a strain that wouldn't require tending & care, just seed a few patches out in the boonies so they can come back 6 months later to see what happened.
