I live in the mountains too, and any responsible parents around here would be smart and take care of a threat to their family. It's not any one human's fault that there are so many of us. It's wrong to hate a human for wanting to protect itself. The cat would kill you (or try) if it thought you were a danger to it or its cubs... Guess what, that's how the mop flops in the natural world. We are as natural as they are, and as righteous in protecting our kin as they are.
If you have no kids, you simply don't know what a parent thinks when he sees a large predator looking at his kids as they play. If you think you know what you're talking about, but aren't a parent, you're simply talking, talking, talking. Whoosh, hot air.
The most dangerous animals anywhere are parents. A mother bear, a mother cougar, a mother human, a mother dolphin, a mother chipmunk, a mother blue jay etc. If you are not a parent, you simply don't understand the impulse to protect (at all costs) that a parent gets. You can try to imagine what that feels like, but believe me, you can't imagine it correctly.
If I had no kids, the cat would be in less danger. If I run into a female cougar with no cub, I'D be in less danger. Same thing. It's a natural feeling only parents can tell you about. In this story, the KIDS are the variable, and a variable only parents can calculate properly.
That cat would have been in trouble if I caught it close to my kids. And I'd be in trouble if I were caught close to hers. That's fair.
.♠. said:I absolutely agree that it is not a good idea to feed wild animals at all, though I do have to comment that apples and hay (though not in bale form) are a part of an elks natural diet. Eating them is not messing up its natural digestive abilities.
Unless the elk around here are just unique.
Also if ya worry over a person shooting racoons why don't ya simply give them a couple heavy duty bungee straps to keep the lids shut. That method works around these parts anyway. And no more dead racoons.
It would take little effort to be part of a solution.
