Just say no to social networking!

The real fucked up thing - I'm now classified as suspicious by many entities precisely for my lack of a trackable online presence. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

Agreed. During the Aurora theater shooting the media made a big deal over the fact that the gunman didn't seem to be involved in any social media like Facebook/Twitter. A fact which they all too quickly used to paint a stereotypical picture of the assailant as the confirmed, loner outcast nutcase weirdo.

So just because I value my privacy very highly and feel no need to tell the world I ordered chinese take-out for lunch I guess I'm a loner outcast nutcase weirdo too. Wow, what a shock it was to discover that avoiding social media is so unconventional these days it apparently puts you on the short list with the likes of mass murders.

If anyone wants to build a dossier on me they're going to have to do it the "old fashioned" way by flat-footing behind shrubbery and digging through trash cans. Sorry, I'm not going to hand one to you online. If that makes me a weirdo, then fine. I'd rather be a shrewd "weirdo" than a misguided lackey any day of the week.

I'm a social person IRL but fuck social media online. The smartest move is to be as completely anonymous online as you can be. In fact you're not even reading this right now. Because I don't even exist. ~TheProf

All this intrusive crap is starting to really bother me. I have been involved daily with computers through work and at home since I bought my first Commodore 8088 back the mid 1980s, and once worked at a place that had a liquid cooled Cray, at that time purported to be the fastest computer in the world. But the industry has just gone way downhill both criminally and commonly intruding on strictly personal data. That's also the apparent future of computing, to just get worse, threatening us with all this stupid cloud shit.

All that is especially bothersome to me because I was taught privacy was one of the main parts of liberty we enjoy as Americans and worth fighting for. Turns out to be complete absolute bullshit. As a disabled retired 20 year veteran, that's quite a jolt to realize that now.

I am seriously considering just backing away and turning on the machine just to pay bills and check my email. It'll be tough because computers have been a large part of my daily life for 30 years now, but I want my freedom back.

i just deleted my facebook, i don't use it all that much, but still worried about any exposure.

now if i can just talk myself out of my 'smartphone'.

that's a tough one...

I set up a facebook account years ago and the very first thing that happened is a ex-GF wanted to friend me...I immediately abandoned all social networking from that day forward...and so glad I did

Facebook is for lonely, needy people looking to belong to anything. And the television is the "Liars Box." Look inward to yourself......there's the real prize! FH

I don't see how it is you feel Facebook, or any other social network, has "The amount of private information" you might believe. They don't have my social security number (374-59-8834) or my medical history that shows I had a sex change in '68. I'm not too sure they (social networks) even know that I'm an Eagle Boyscout, which is public information. Unless you are insane enough to publish your personal information on the internet or any other form of media (film, photograph, recording), how is it they found the information?

Oh yeah, I forgot. You can't post anything on the internet if it isn't true.
