months ago i bought a 300 x 800 sok...connected it up to the fan to try it out but had probs with it being too noisy ...then grow plans changed(didnt move house) ...and where i was growing the fans was way to noisy....so i never got to use it realy...the otherday thought i'd ask at the hydro shop about getting my fan noise down ...and mentioned i would be using the sok(bought from them)...the guy pointed to the corner and over and over said bring it back....a pile of the soks where there that had been returned and they wernt selling them no more...ppl had too many issues with them and humid grow areas and smell not being covered up at all...said if i add $60 more i'd get myself a carbon filter...wich is what i was going to buy in the 1st place and got talked into the sok...grrrrrr....but now i find i need neither due not to have a grow anymore and probly never to be growing again?... just getting a refund now so worked out in the end i guess.HH. =]-~

sok is great for a small grow, infact i wouldn't get anything else as it is so cheap and lightweight, easy to move around and no mess.

for anything over say 2kw, get a can with activated carbon. bigger is better.

Though, Northern Farmer claims his 50kw comercial crew switched to the sok and says he can't smell a thing. So, maybe they are running like 10 bigass soks(?)

Hi all,

It's roughly Day 33 and I think it's time for an update.

I'm beginning to doubt the power of the OdorSok. Obviously it's much later into flower and I think I'm beginning to smell the plants through the scrubber.

Yesterday I removed it and tried to dry it via a Blow Dryer on hot, thinking that my humidity ( 65-70% ) was saturating the Sok and causing it to work less effectively. I swear this morning it smells like it's even LESS effective than before I dried it.

I'm starting to worry that this was a waste of money on my part, but I guess someone has to test stuff out for the benefit of the community. I will keep my nose to the test and see if it anything changes.

I was hoping it would last at least though the end of flowering, but I'm not sure it will happen at this pace. I'm doubling up by using some leftover VaporTronic discs, but they don't seem to last very long in a high air exchange setup.

I will keep everyone posted..

Hi my fellow ICmaggers,

It is day 44, and I figure it would be good to update you on the progress.

One variable I forgot to mention, was I recently setup a small rubbermaid mother/veg cab in the same room as the flowering cab. What I didn't think about, was the lack of odor control coming from the box. I also didn't think VEGGING plants would be so smelly.

It made it really hard to identify which odor was coming from where, and I think that may have been the problem all along. So a few days ago, I installed a small, small carbon scrubber on the veg cab and I noticed the overall odor was reduced by at least 50%.

I still smell a faint odor of "skunkiness" from the OdorSok cab, but nothing like it was previously. I did order some activated carbon in hopes of making a DIY filter to do back to back testing vs the OdorSok.

So while it's not filtering 100%, it does seem to do a decent job with stinky kush plants in flowering. Unfortunately anything less than 100% is a risk I'm not willing to take.

I will keep everyone posted on the progress.

Hey man, try throwing the thing in the dryer for 15-20 minutes. The guy at the hydro store in my city says its a must with odorsoks. 15-20 minutes in the dryer every 2 weeks keeps it working great according to him. A couple of his customers took his advice and then told him later that it kept the odorsok working perfectly. Worth a try anyways.

Stinky,

I will give that a shot next time as soon as I can. I'm gunna build another DIY scrubber and do a back to back test. Thanks for the info tho, I really appreciate it. I have a feeling most hydro shops around here don't have enough experience with them yet.

Nothing beats a good carbon scrubber in a semi-sealed or sealed room. I have a Can 100 scrubber matched to an Elicent 200B fan with a semi-sealed room. I can't smell a thing from my 28 really stinky strain of A47 being lite by 4 - 1000 watt hps. I have tried everything minus the Odour Sock and this works the best hands down. I think everyone should go over-kill on smell control and try not to worry about the money so much. It is mandatory to kill the smell 100%. Smell is the second leading cause to getting busted next to rats - but I am sure you all know this already. If you don't say a word to anyone about your grow and you kill the smell 100% it is very unlikely to get busted. I like to sleep well at night, so I go over-kill on smell control, and that includes a larger than needed carbon scrubber. Sound like a commercial lol! Anyways, be safe.

Stinky,

I just tried the dryer trick and while I think it helped somewhat, it's nowhere near where it should be as far as effectiveness. This is day 50 and I can still smell a light skunky odor coming from the cab. Enough to make me worry that is. Looks like the OdorSok is a failure for long term scrubbing.

TGT,

I agree 100%. If it wasn't for my goofy cab dimensions I would have prolly bought a pre-fab scrubber already. But alas, I believe I have a idea for a DIY that should be able to work quite well ever under the stinkiest of strains and still be cheaper than a pre-fab to boot! Stay tuned for the DIY post coming shortly.

It's all good Stinky, I figure when it comes to something as important as this, we need to have real world tests and as much info as possible so we can make the best choice.

I relocated the OdorSok to the output of my veg cab to see how it holds up under way ligher conditions. My flowering box now has this: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=74922

Hope this helps some of you.

my scrubber has worked pretty well. i think the idea is to let as much air pass through as much carbon as possible. the trick that worked for me was using the 6 inch scrubber with my 4 inch vortex blower. it seems with cannabis(especially the more pungent varieties) a little home engineering will work wonders. my theory was that even though the scrubber was designed for a larger ventilation system, the scrubber has more carbon and lets air pass more easily. this means that i have the same amount of air passing over a larger filtering surface. sorry guys just thinking(typing) out loud. maybe this will help somebody out. damn im stoned :)

How long have you had it running Esco?

Now I have no experience with CFLs or major HIDs either. But I believed my sok was oversized just like yours is.

Let us know how it turns out!

Peace,

Does the material give up on OdorSoks or what? Why such a quick breakdown?

I'm guessing so, Chosen. They work great for the first 30 days or so, but after that, they seem to have a hard time keeping the odors at bay.

Honestly, for the money I spent on my DIY scrubber, it's a no brainer. You can build and refill once for the price of the OdorSok. I was just feeling lazy and kind of like a guinea pig for my IC compadres. As much as I learned from OG and IC, I figure I should give back ;)

Peace,
