Just got Vortex 6" for my 2'x3'x4' 400W cab

Hey all, I have a Hydrofarm aircooled 400w with I believe a magnetic ballast (says 60 Hz on the specs sticker). I'm still in the middle of building my cab. I ordered a Vortex 6" fan for my cooling, I plan on running it off a fan speed controller. I can't decide how I want to hook everything up. The Vortex is going to be physically large for my space. I'm thinking of cutting a hole in the top about 7" and mounting it with the flange sticking out the top. I'd then hook a home made carbon scrubber to the outside flange and run a 6" - 4" reducer hookup to my air cooled vent.

I should add that below the flower room is a veg room with 27w x 6 CFLs with 2 comp fans pulling air over the bulbs and passive intakes going up to the flower room.

What do you guys think of this idea? Is this going to be cool enough for my babies?

Thanks IC

if it's the 449cfm fan, i think it will do it regarding air movement, but you may have to get a smaller fan to aircool the lamp, it will generate a lot of heat

I use only the Vortex 6" to cool my 430 cab that is the same size as yours. You'll be fine.

I don't think you'll need another fan.

I run a 6 inch and cool a 600 and 400 hps through 6 inch hoods no problem

What do you do about the sound? I just got a 4" Elicent and it's LOUD!

you could build a small box around your fan and insulate it I think in growroom design it has a thread or 2 about it I hope that helps

Also a solid state speed controller will slow it down and thus make it more quiet. I didn't do this though. I think that the loudest thing about these fans in the whooshing intake and exhaust air. I put another carbon filter on the end of my exhaust just to silence that air as well. Get the rushing air sound as far away from your cab as possible, and if you can't then try and muffle it with another carbon scrubber.

The main point I am curious about is if I have the 6" (yes that is the 450ish CFM model) hooked directly up to the 4" flange on my air cooled reflector (w/ glass). :)

Fan speed controller is definitely in the works for this setup.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

I'm doing a 400 watt Cermaic Metal Halide bulb with a 24 inch umbrella reflector inside of a 31D X 33H X 36W I have a Speedster, 4 inch fan /scrubber combo coming this week and a 6 inch 440 cfm fan just in case. CMH Bulbs put off a lot less heat. I should have everything set up this weekend, I'll see what kind of temps I end up with on a dry system but, the cabinet is designed to pull air off of the floor and around a 30 gallon res tank and exhaust into another room.

yea i think you a little over kill but maybe thats just me i use the 4in vortec in my cab which is 2ft x 2ft x 4ft and i run my 400 in there just fine just 2 degrees above ambent so i couldn't imagine the 6in not being strong enough

That's promising for me to hear, I just got my ballast and refelctor and started settig up my new cab......the whole time thinking, maybe I should have gone 250 watts....
