sure, it's what you want them to do, protecting the family. but it would be nice if you could train her to only go into defense mode when the family is being attacked. but i know how it is, not criticizing at all. some dogs just have certain ticks, can be very hard to change their habits.

Sorry Gauis old mate but are you suggesting letting a vicious dog attack another dog and its not able to protect itself ???,,,
so if family are attacked then it can steam in but its not allowed to protect itself as in what happened to our dog,,it didnt ask for the said staffie to tear into her and had to protect herself,,,,s2:tiphat:

I know people automatically blame the animals when stuff like this happens.

I personally blame the owners.

EXACTLY!!

I prefer dogs over most people, but dogs do what dogs do; alpha, beta, what ever.

When a dog screws up, it's -almost- always a result of an owner not taking responsibility. In many cases I'd advocate for bending that cane over the owner's head/body, rather than the pup's. Of course, that potentially carries more severe consequences, despite the real justice in it.

But in a pinch, when stuff needs to happen quickly, sorting out who shares what in the way of responsibility takes a back seat.

Recently had two LARGE reddish tinged tan huskies (may have been part m'loot) enter the driveway in our rural area, like they were on a mission. Never seen the 2 before. My wife was in the rather lengthy driveway with her poodle, near the vehicles, when I saw the two, and they were headed toward my wife and her dog like sharks. I'd guess them to have been between 75 and 90 lb. dogs. Her poodle weighs in at all of about 15 lbs.

I hollered in my most aggressive voice, telling them to "get!" in a tone that I think carried the soon-to-be-lethal warning I meant to impart, and they heeded the sound of it, hearing the seriousness in my command, as the next sound was going to be a 10mm.

I wish owners would consider what risks they leave their friends open to when they fail to provide responsible constraints in ownership.

don't you consider your dogs part of the family mate?

i think you are not getting what i'm trying to say. my pets are part of my family and for sure i'd be happy for my dog to protect any member of the family, including my pets. hope that clears things up, lmao....

April is staying in the animal hospital tonight in an oxygen chamber on pain killers, being monitored just to be sure but they think she will be ok. I feel terrible I didn’t act quicker and her leg got bit but they checked and that’s seems to be the worst of it. A few punctures from claws but no sign of internal injury.
I’ve been very upset about the dog. I hate that I hit him. Maybe I could have wrestled him I don’t know I hope he’s ok. I used my crutch because that’s what I have to hand at any given moment. It’s not like I planned it. He didn’t look like he was hurt. I blame the owners for not keeping him out of my yard. They live a few doors down the street. When they came to get the dog the woman was carrying a mallet.

Thank you everybody for kind words, April needs the good vibes ;)

damn i didnt realize it was quite that serious. poor cat, what a thing to happen. i would be very upset with the dog owner, he should pay all the bills for both you guys medical care and he should do it while apologizing profusely.

As an owner of a Cat and a Dog, this sorta thing terrifies me on more then one level.

I live on the edge of a national forest and we get all the animals.

They don't leave notes saying, "the mountain lion ate the female cat, and the fox got the chicken".

Anyway had 2 cats and 1 chicken disappear in short order about 3 weeks ago when we had a mountain lion sighted in a neighbor's backyard.

This morning I was just up on the roof lifting the base of a new chicken coop up onto a new foundation, 9+ feet off the ground.

I'm learning to be strict with the animals. 6 PM rolls around and the cat comes indoors, whether he likes it or not.

Glad your cat will be OK, Spav.

I don't think you should feel badly about having to force the dog away. You were in a justifiable defense mode, and dogs can be -surprisingly- strong.

Entering into an animal attack like that without something to put between you and the pup can cost you severely. As it was, you stated you were bleeding by the time it ended. You may want to have that looked at if you haven't already. Seriously.

All in all, I'd say you did the right thing with what you had..

Had the owners been on-step, the whole thing could've been avoided.

Yes i feel bad that the owner let the whole thing arise. I bet the zoo keepers who have to shoot lions because some asshole broke into the enclosure, terrible, but they have to do it and I had to stop him or my cat would be dead probably. Its just horrible anyway I look at it and Im grateful things didn't turn out worse. I just have claws scratches and grazes from falling over pretty much. As soon as I started using the crutch to beat the dog, I fell on the concrete and had to resume beating from a kneeling position. The third blow made him yelp and run off.

I appreciate all the replies :thank you:

W

Water-

I wouldnt worry about the dog spaventa.
You showed the dog who was alpha and im sure it respects you now.
Thats how dog packs function.

I've definitely killed a dog for less no remorse whatsoever. The way I see it, if a dog is out of control it's only a matter of time before it kills someone, but to each his own some feel bad about killing animals meanwhile I was hunting at about 10 years old.

Its society

Its society

walking dogs is accepted as norm in your country
They live in your house
get put in a cage buy many.

Im in a 3rd world country

observations

Dogs here have territorys and are smarter cos the less smart 1 didnt get to breed and 2 got killed or starved.

Rare to see a dog walked on a lead because of territory

So there are scent designated areas boss dog main area has over time accepted some dogs in smaller areas within his area, process consists of domination and acceptence.
mostly the accepted dogs have a shop house = roller shutter mom n pop type store the dog gets accepted gets fed sleeps outside protects store and kids
Also is expected to support the boss dog main area if another male trys take over.

Its the whole society effect ,cops here will spend hours talking a nutter down /hostage situation ect they shoot at very last resort.

Buddhism prevails.
The temples have loads of dogs.

One of my neighbors a few blocks over rolled up in front of the house and told me his next door neighbors dogs got loose and ripped the other neighbors cat in half.

I made sure my cats were inside and then the dogs ran up in my yard and went after my neighbors cat who was just hanging out in the yard. Lucky for him he was close to a tree, because they went at him hard.

I ran over to chase the dogs off and one turned on me. I stood my ground, drew back my fist and got ready to pop him in the snout. Then the dogs got distracted and ran off. Good thing too, they were both Rottweiler/Pit mixes and they were huge and all amped up. I woulda got fucked up, but I wasn't going to let them shred my disabled neighbors cat. He's a dummy, but he doesn't deserve to be ripped apart.

I never seen a cat go up a tree that fast, and he wouldn't come down for a while.

Its really a shame when this kind of stuff happens. I've got a Staffy x Rotti x Huntaway (NZ Sheepdog) and it's the most wonderful dog I've owned, partly because when I got him I was living on a horse farm so he learned how to deal with other animals. He's shit scared of cats because the farm cats were much bigger and meaner than he was for a good year and he hates horses cause he's been kicked after thinking it'd be fun to chase them in training. Other than that he's never harmed a fly, but does get pretty agro if the cops or animal control comes around, dogs seem to have that sense about them.

When I was young we had a rescue Neapolitan Mastiff who we had to put down in his 18th year of life due to the pack mentality they get at times. Was the best and most loyal dog until his final years. We'd actually gotten a couple cats on our property and the dogs had been fine with them for a few years, until one day. Something happened and they turned on each other, the 3 dogs had chased the cats up a tree and one cat thought the only way to get out of the situation was to jump at the Mastiff's face. This didn't go down well and while we should have taken notice at that point we didn't. Later in the month, with a number of other dogs in the area, our Mastiff brought home one of the neighbors calfs, dead, to our front door. At that point we knew it was time, was one of the hardest things I had to do as a kid, but it was necessary. Sadly a lot of people don't realize this these days so what happened to you and your cat unfortunately keeps going on. Sorry you had to deal with that my man.

How is the cat doing? They can turn real nervous after something like this happens.

A cat of ours was grabbed by a small dog once. She needed stitches and some jabs for infection but she was never the same again. Really scared all the time walking around on her belly. Wouldn't let any of us touch her. After a couple of months she just didn't come home. I don't think she felt safe here anymore.

Ive always owned staffs and cats, we have one of each now.

Of course I hope you're well too.
