)I must grow NL #5 at some point in life. I've always loved the leaves, and every NL I've smoked was a very enjoyable experience

It’s a lovely plant, certainly. For sure there’s a great deal more to discover than meets the eye with this amazing plant. Thanks for dropping in.

30 days flower..

30 days flower..

Just a quick picture..
Still nothing much going on. Turned up the light even more, fed 4 tsp Epsom per 7 litres of water and added the normal bloom and organic pk booster.

Here’s a comparison of now and 7 days ago:

You can see they’ve lost a bit of lustre, although the lamp is brighter so that might have something to do with it also..

Slow going.... Probably looking at a 9/10 week finish.

They look beautiful and healthy. Nice work. You mentioned that they lack flavor, but I'm wondering if you can go into a little bit greater detail. For example, compared to modern day strains and/or strains with a noticable STRONG flavor/scent, I've always found Northern Lights to have a mild earthy/herbally flavor, on occasions some pine, but never have they been "loud". Is this what you're referring to? Or does your NL completely lack flavor, as I've experienced in other strains such as G-13, and the shitty M-39 beaster clone from Canada?

Regardless, once again beautiful plants, and I'm curious if you plan on crossing it with perhaps a different indica for hybrid vigor and to perhaps add some flavor?

Peace and Love,
Tetra

M-39 is not beasters

beasters is not a strain specific Its just crop pulled early w/little or no cure sent to commercial market

could be anything

M-39 is Skunk 1 x NL by SSSC

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was getting at regarding my own experience. Typical NL has, as you say, mild aroma and flavour - Piney, organic, earthy, mossy and sometimes woody phenotype depending. It doesn’t have a wow factor when you compare to other newer hybrids. And that’s fine, the Northern Lights seed lines are perfect as they are.

No plans on seeding any of the plants.

Cheers.

You are somewhat correct and somewhat wrong. Yes, beasters was a generic term for random Canadian bud making it's way into the US, but for a while there was an M-39 clone grown in MASSES by the Vietnamese. It was unmistakable. It flooded the entire states. There are many threads about it here, and on other forums as well.

I've said here many times, M-39 is a good smoke if grown properly. The hydro grows they were doing, and the brix, and kiefing the buds first, it was horrible. Very prevailant in the midwest, and unless you were buying in bulk, it was going for the same price as "real" dank, around 50-60 an 8th. Visually it looked great at first glance. Fat buds, dark green leaves, red hairs, but it had a hay like smell, virtually no flavor, and you had to smoke a lot to get high.

That is not opinion, or speculation, that is factual information.

Lets lose the association with the M-39

It was a long time ago

Folks are working with the M-39 making new hybrids

Maybe it was good to start with LED but perhaps it was utter foolishness too :D

I might hit them with a bit of grow next week. Fish emulsion might be better? I’ve never used it.. I try and feed with only plant origin based feeds and tend to stay away from anything of animal origin. Some might see this as being a bit narrow minded but each to their own ;)

Yes, you’re probably right, it can hold it’s own. As you and others have pointed out, the potency of most NL lines are very good. When it comes to taste and aroma it’s a bit lacking. Also there’s definitely quite a difference between varying seed lines. The seed line I’m growing is probably pretty standard NL. Other’s, including various NL#5 seed lines on sale at the moment, probably have a greater degree of variation and a lot more to offer.

I’ve actually got quite a few (maybe 100 seeds) of an open pollination of Bodhi’s NL#5 f3. Supposedly this was an old BCSC seed line from back in the day. I haven’t started to go through them but hope they might hold a few gems.

I didn’t take cuttings. Unfortunately I just don’t have the indoor space at the moment. During the summer I plan on setting some regular seed outdoor which I’ll take cuttings from.

Thanks for your thoughts as always :)

LOL. Foolishness, yeah, I have questioned myself in this same regard. Really considering a comparison run next fall. QB versus HID. But that would really cut into my space.

I never personally looked into it but years ago I had a friend who was really all about following Kyle Kushman's method. A vegan approach if I remember correctly. Similar, I think, to what it sounds like you're saying. I have always liked using fish emulsions for a hit of N when needed.

Sweet! Having those from Bodhi has to make you smile! I have been meaning for years to grab Dr. Atomic's and Peak's offerings but just haven't gotten around to it... bet you're right that there's some gems in those F3s. :dance013:

Any idea yet what you're going to run outdoors?

Your girls are looking GREAT! :woohoo:

A few pics..

A few pics..

Firstly, sorry for the shitty phone photos. Seems uploading to the forum also degrades the quality.. I had my camera stolen from a friends house a number of years ago and still haven’t replaced it.

The NL are doing ok. The next run will hopefully be a lot better now I’ve got more of a grip on how this all works again.

To me, they look a little under developed. They’ve been flowering 37 days so a way to.. For some reason I think the flowers should be bigger. Most likely I’m just impatient:D

Those look just fine for 37 days. They will still fatten up a lot. What sort of smells are developing?

I had a mid-90s NL that smelled exactly like fresh peaches. I miss that plant. I still have some hybrids from it, though.

The photos look good to me and so do the plants. :) The Nl I've run has had a similar look to that. Buds are not quite as thick on the outside but will dense up on the inside given some more time. Don't worry, the patience will pay off

Wow fantastic job Kalb! I was looking for some info on indoor soil and stumbled upon your thread. I happy to see you growing again and indoors no less. Your plants look happy and have recovered rather nicely since December. Buds looks like they are coming along and I love those sugar leaves...tasty! I'm subbed.

What sort of smells are developing?

When I open the tent, the smell is pretty mild. Green oak mixed with just a touch of citrus. It’s early days but I think the citrus thing will disappear soon.

If I move the plants around then it gets hashy in the room and the aroma intensifies. It brings out that heavy old skool myrcene smell that’s dominant in Dutch NL lines.

Definitely what I was expecting from this line. Pretty classic smell all round :)
