July plantings ?

W

wegobigupnorth

It's funny reading people freaking out asking if July is "too late" 75% of my crop goes out in July as I grow in more urban spots where growing 15 foot tall trees would be seen and ripped off (or worse) too easily.

as madtrapper mentioned, to plant in the corn which many do around here you have to wait until after its sprayed plus if you put plants in early they would tower over the corn anyway. I don't usually do a ton in the corn as kids literally go around through corn fields looking only time I been ripped is in corn but I still always do it because it's sooo easy. I carry a bunch of inch tall seedlings and a trowel in the dead of night. Cut down 2 or 3 corn stalks loosen up the dirt with trowel and pop the plant in. I average 3 ounces per plant like this never get less then 2 and all of them are planted outside after July 10th I keep putting certain strains out until August.

Side note: When I was a kid I found tons of weed in corn fields and even found one crop because I saw a guy run out of a corn field in the middle of the day and jump in a car and being a young kid I was curious as to what he was doing. I was not ripping just a kid. If you want to plant in corn choose a field that punk rippers can't easily access. I've seen them climb trees on the edge of the field to get a view from above. It is crazy easy to see weed in corn from above esp if you got a big patch in one spot...spread em out.

I do have another question in mind about all these holes I am digging and late plantings. I know that bigger holes always give me bigger yields, but i'm telling you if you only knew how many holes I have dug this year, it would surprise ya, but its getting tiring. Yet, i'm not going to give up, I shall keep digging those bastards!

What I was thinking though, since the beans just now germed and sprouted and I will be vegging in a controlled environment for about 3 weeks before setting out which will be in July, do the girls still require large holes to yield say between 2-4 ounces a piece? I figure since their life will be much shorter planted late compared to planted early (April and May) the root system would not fill out as much. So would you think holes about 1 ft wide by about 1ft deep would be plenty? Or even smaller? For a 2- 4 oz yield that is. I have been digging holes about 2 to 3 feet wide by about 1 to 2 feet deep. This would help me a lot if it would work.

Just to clear it up lol, I know it will work, but is it probable to reward my goals?

Rule of thumb has always been 1 oz per gal container that`s dirt grown , so I don`t see why yas can`t pull 4-5 oz`s out of a cu ft hole.....now...

That is if the plant`s maintained and if the hole perks/drains when it rains.....and for the record I used to set out plants every week-2 weeks from last week in march till mid july for insurance against predators 4 legged as well as 2 , and the late plantings always purpled up with all but no chlorophyll left in em by end of cycle....

As you`ve seen above , some plants can get 6' tall and wide if decent size when transplanted late , cuz the minute they go outside they`re in stretch mode and will blast off for at least a month strain dependent , so know what you`re planting for security reasons....

I`ve got an old head buddy that won`t plant until mid july and lives in a cow pasture that backs up to a tree line of 1000`s of acres of national park land where the sun comes up literally on the extreme left of his property , and sets extreme right for true east-west tracking with 14 hrs direct sun....aight.....to make a long story short....

Right at the treeline he uses a mantis tiller to break up the dirt he`s been growin in for yrs with clover cover crops planted after harvest every fall with added amendments , and in 1 fell swoop he plants 1000 1' fully rooted cuts 1' on center that ends up 2-3' tall and looks like a hedgeline from the air , and blends in with the rest of the weeds backed up to the treelines as well.......perfect camouflage....and again......

Once they make it through the first couple frosts from being planted late , chlorophyll degrades and blends em into the surrounding "fall colors" for even more camouflage from the air.....

Does real well and has for at least 20 yrs I`ve known him, but he`s. a hermit , lives in the mtns , and literally only comes to town for supplies maybe every 6 months.....anyways....

Just thought I`d throw that out there for folks to ponder , cuz in non-med states , stealth means wealth , and trust 2 people......you and yourself....

Peace....DHF....:ying:....

funny I have allways used the 1 oz a plant when i do a guestamate of what the harvest may be like been running 1000 per yr for along time now....1oz per plant seems app for a finish in my area with my type of plantings.I also agree I trust 2 people in this room me and myself and you I not so sure about..lol
Now on the corn planting if we could just get a few rounds in a few of them planes rented out for crop dusting and the pukes with sat phone gps pics we might just be a lil safer in the corn do you realize 20 yrs ago I harvested 95% of my corn crops...I gonna get my bud a upgrade from the .22 he has been blasting at the planes.. to a 22-250 after he drops a few they might slow up..Cheers

Think in my area it will be a good year for mini clones. i would probably only need 3 gallon grow bags

These are three of my biggest growers in my baskin robins of strains..
thought it would be neat to see what one outdoes the others.

I live in south hemisphere 20 *s and grow sativas, i have sperience starting in December and january ( the same as juny, july in north hemsp).there is an extreme difference between a plant which started on December 25 , and which started on January 15, the first yield is arround a pound and the second is a maximum of 7 pounds.

I'm far north, 47th parallel north and I've planted in July before. yield was okay at best for outdoor in my opinion. . Ended up with 3-5oz dry, per plant.

great thread and even greater pics.

No matter what I learn something new each time I log onto the OD forum. I didnt know there were guerillas that only planted in July vs putting a 2nd crop in July. So cool to see all the different growing techniques.

I only did late season minis once. I used a cold frame to start seeds around june 15th to put in the ground 2nd week in july. It was the same cold frame I used to start my May 15th planting.

I cleared small area of 5 ft tall native veg and dug 6inch dia x 8 inch deep holes. Planted two plants per hole and pulled the males of course and harvested 1 -1.5 oz per plant.

Only did it one season because I put almost the same amount of work into it as my may15th planting maybe more. I didnt see the math because I was pulling 1/4 - 1/2 lb in the earlier ones.

I was wrong because i see now it depends on what works for in your situation. Corn makes sense if you dont have to water a bunch. Late makes sense for security reasons too. Weather is more favorable too.

I repeat great thread.
