John Prine; Soulful Writer, Musician & Vocalist

Thanks all. I'm chronically out of rep these days. I'll circle back for another strafing run later..

Yep, the cannibals frying John in the pan making no matter, as long as he's got his woe-man..

or Sabu visits the Twin Cities Alone. Maybe from the same CD/album??

I've been attempting to post one tune a day, and if he holds on as long as it takes to post his more noteworthy music, then he's got years ahead of him, at one tune per day.

There've been times I'm failing, but at least trying to make it one in the P.M., and 1 in the A.M. on those days when my self-discipline is lacking.

Couple times I posted a couple or more at once. I repented to the Cosmos. ;^>)

'Burn One with John Prine' is a Kacey Musgraves moment, and I hadn't heard it until the other day; hilarious intro when they're both on stage. All wonderfully nice, soulful-human folks.

Off topic, I saw a Brandi Carlile tune with Kacey Musgraves, about Kacey stealing Ms. Carlile's grandmother's wheel chair, racing around a casino in it (apparently a true story), thinking it was a loaner chair from the casino.. Like Prine, it's a treat listening to stories of people who get so much from an ordinary day. Life NEEDS that kind of magic, and sometimes it's not that it's lacking, but more a matter of how to see it.

Not an update, but an appreciation for the man and his incredibly beautiful, touching, empathetic work.

That was an article I'd not read yet. It gave insight to the past, younger Prine, who, when doing the Strawberry music work-shop, was asked about the history and lyrics to 'Hello in There', and he sort of joked it aside, telling folks it wasn't meant as an instructional.

I guess my initial read on that moment, versus the other (more honest/deeper?) commentary, would be that persons who write or speak from their hearts, often write or speak about things that, to discuss such things openly, or more in-depth, with strangers, and get into the meat of it, sometimes leads to melting down at times that others don't understand. (*Not that I'm projecting personal experiences or anything..:) )

At those times, making a wise crack, or letting it go as something more shallow, allows the maintenance of the veneer, saving the self and others from that quivering voice moment.

All in all, I'd take the explanation given in the article you posted, over the more contrite disregard and dismissal given at the Strawberry festival. .And I think Mr. Prine's lyrics reveal a deep understanding of the human heart, the Cosmic joke, and more, to the extent that I believe, or want to believe, there's THAT much more truth in the deeper commentary given, rather than the explanation of thinking of hollering down a hollow log after listening to some John Lenon, which was his brief explanation at the Strawberry festival. Makes sense now..

In any case, a very kind and beautiful article about Mr. Prine, and social isolation, again, ironically at a time when social isolation for those who previously were m ore into engaging in social circulation, is now a matter of policy and prescription.

So, "Hello in There.' :)

And stay healthy!!

He grows on a person, sdd. Then one day you find yourself dealing with crisis, or standing on the side of the road, or.... and singing his tunes.. Sometimes like a rainbow coming out after an intense down-pour.

I'll blow my limit again today. Can't have 'Burn One with John Prine' and not link to his classic, 'Illegal Smile.'

Wouldn't be right. :)

Relatively poor sound quality, but hey, he's got the entire crowd at Bonnaroo in 2010, engaged in a sing-along with a song that many of them weren't born when he wrote it... And he's just a-smilin'.... whether illegally or not. :)

Passed away from complications of COVID. Sigh "Angels from Montgomery", Mr. Prine. You gave us joy and provocative thought in your lyrics. RIP.

Celebrated as one of the most influential songwriters of all time, has died due to complications from the coronavirus, roughly two months after he received a Lifetime Achievement honor at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. He was 73 years old.

It makes me sad. I really loved his Music. Before years, i think it was KSP, told me, here on IC, i shall check him. He wrote something about "illegal smile" and i didn´t know the saying.

My wife and i often sang his Duett Songs, while driving in the car.
