Does anyone want to point out the difference between civil war and revolution?

Does anyone want to point out that citizens made it inside the Capitol in numbers large enough to have overwhelmed the security there??

People died and nothing but disaster followed.

I disagree. Mainly because anger is not a base emotion. Fear is a base emotion. And fear is the root of anger. And there are those who have used and continue to use fear as a motivating driver of anger. "Fear these people because they are doing X and Y!"

I would say fear and greed is what drives any war machine.

Only in the modern world. Up until just recently wars were fought because people wanted other peoples stuff. Other reasons too, but expansion was huge.

Depends on your definition of modern I guess.

Do you include Hitler in modern? What about the Civil War? The Revolutionary War? French Revolution? War of the Roses?

All of those are examples of fear being used as a tool to drive war. Fear of something being taken away, or of some perceived advantage, or threat of being destroyed, or their children starving to death. All it takes is a small group of individuals (or in some cases, a single individual) to convince a large group of people to fear another group of people for some reason. First you point out differences. Then you vilify the differences. Once you've started the fear, it will perpetuate and soon turn into anger all by itself.

Fear has long been used as a driving force for war. And greed. But Wait! There's more!

In general, large groups of people aren't greedy if their basic needs are met. Greed comes from very small groups of people (or individual) wanting something they don't have. And small groups of people generally don't have the ability to take something that doesn't belong to them from a large group of people. Like land. They need to somehow convince a large group of people to help them take what they want. Name one thing better than fear to drive a large group of people to do something they generally don't want to do because they don't need to do it.

You’re right about needs being met. That’s why war always follows famine.

I use the term modern to describe post Industrial Revolution time period.

Now that most people’s needs are met we need whipped up in a fear frenzy to act. Having all of the needs met is also when society can get really weird.

Starving people in the desert aren’t typically worried about gender studies.
