I was originally pulled into the world of anime through TWO movies :

The obious ones : AKIRA & NAUSSICCA valley of the wind....both these movies are amazing, Princess Mononoke (not my fav but good), Metropolis was ok (i own on dvd) I haven't seen that movie tekinkonkret yet ..heard it was awesome

ill try to be breif since my experience is limited, but i hope to find experts in this genre and hopefully can help me weed throught the thousands of animes out there and help me dig up good ones right up my alley...here is what i like and ive seen :
Vampire hunter D(most of the series)
Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2 : i think i saw the first anime series but im not sure which ones exactly(id like some help to know wich ones im missing(or which ones are worth watvching)
Im a huge cowboy bee bop fan(and i own the movie dvd, and season one on DVD), ive cued up the 2 and third etc season on blockbuster and plan to have the entire if not almost entire collection.(does anyone have any cool suggestions for cowboy bee bop es-que animes??)

I was really inspired by the comics and anime movie of naussiccca i found the story line exceptional and the anime was top notch! i love world war II style anima with tanks and bombers in anime style..but with a modern twist! i love sci fi and love the robotech style stuff(not a fan of dragon ball Z stuff or anything that is RPG related or has game cards). The vampire stuff like van helsing and others are coo....but thye have to be exceptional!!

Can someone give me a few suggestions? and ABSOLUTE classics i might have missed??

This thread is not to start beef, simply add your 2 cents and DO NOT troll others...those posts deemed aggressive and of a trolling nature will be dealt with. This is a peaceful civilized thread and please do nto TURN itpolitical!!

Avatar: The Last Airbender is technically not anime(it's an anime-western animation hybrid), but I've watched a lot of animation and can say it's the best thing to come out in years, perhaps this decade, anime or not.

As for "real" anime, here's some suggestions:

Samurai Champloo-similar to bebop, not as good, but very entertaining, as long as you ignore the "main" plot. The sort of anime you watch once.

Kino no Tabo/ Kino's Travels-a quaint anime about a bunch of wierd cultures a traveller comes across. First 10 min of episode 1 is boring, but after that it's really capivating.

Just about anything by Studio Ghibli, but I'd recommend Kiki's Delivery Service first, because it has the least amount of wierdness for a Ghibli movie.

Basilisk-Truly a great anime; it got me back into anime when everything else was sucking balls. Sort of a Romeo and Juliet type story, but with ninjas that have supernatural powers. Amazing action scenes.

naruto and naruto shippidun
bleach
samurai champloo
devil may cry
dragonball z
LOL avatar is the bomb too
cowboy bebop

I second Samurai Champloo, if you liked Cowboy Bebop it was made by the same producers/directors (you should also see the Cowboy Bebop movie if you liked the show). There's alot of good stuff in anime if you're willing to dig through it all. It depends on what genre's you like. Based on what you listed, I could guess that you like something a bit more serious; I would then cross Naruto, Bleach, or DBZ off the list. The Ghost in the Shell movies are worth watching (both of them). I'd also recommend the Kenshin OVA (3 episodes), not the series. Gungrave was also good, in a Godfather-esque way. Now, there's an underrated show called Monster, that's pretty much hit or miss crime drama - but it's one of my favorites so far as serious anime goes. If you're willing to suspend your disbelief for a bit, I recommend Death Note. There's too many to list.

Now - if you want an absolute mind **** :jump: you should watch Serial Experiment Lain, or Texhnolyze. That would either make you incredibly confused for the next couple weeks, or incredibly depressed if you "get it". But on the bright side, you could then be a self-proclaimed seasoned pro of anime, because I guarantee no one that likes DBZ can sit through these... :muahaha:

What else... oh... if you want to see the craziest CGI you should watch the first few minutes of Karas. Appleseed movie has some good scenes too (it's like a worse Ghost in the Shell with better graphics, similar story).

Did you see they are making a live action Akira movie? It'll be a while though, they just hired a director.

I never really dug anime. At least not when my buddy Joe made me watch it with him. I have an open mind to ANYTHING, so I tried watching some anime. I was pretty stoned, but if my memory serves me correctly the title of the movie was ninja scroll, and I remember some bitch got ****ed by a tree and some guy made out of rocks. Something like that.

My 11 year old son watches Naruto, and I must say it is the worst shite I have ever seen.......

Shitty, choppy low FPS animation, ridiculous and repetitive plot lines....bullshit I say.

Warner Bros cartoons, Ren and Stimpy and the like kicks Naruto's goofy ninja ass any day.

Exactly, genkisan. From what I hear, the manga (comic book) of which the show was based on was good, but the producers were money-grubbing whores. They added in a bunch of unnecessary plot lines, repetitive action sequences, slow stares and reactions (see DBZ). There are even episodes where the same 3-5 minute sequence appears 3 times in the same episode. There was the same 10 minute flashbacks on "Sasuke'" past in at least 5 episodes. I have never seen a worse attempt at creating fillers. :bashhead:

In my opinion if you want to go better than Naruto (same genre), watch Bleach, or Eureka Seven, or Getbackers instead, to name a few. Good old classic American cartoons like Family Guy, or Ducktales, are fairly entertaining, too. lol

I'm down with some anime...

Anything Miyazaki has touched is worth at least one watch, even if it is aimed at the kids.

Ghost in the Shell and Akira are modern classics, definite musts.

Metropolis was pretty cool, and Steamboy was average.

I love the new Appleseed, the hybrid style animation was sooooooo sick...

Series are cool too...
I love Bebop, & Samurai Champloo is a worthy successor.
Speed Grapher is dope, and Death Note is pretty cool.

I've become adept at reading subtitles and watching the shows at the same time.
Takes a little practice...

Series
Trigun- Guns/ Space Western/Comedy (you'll get into this one if you liked Bebop)
Elfen Lied- Blood/Sex/Action
Speed Grapher- Sex/Greed/Action
FMA- Alchemy/Action/Comedy
FLCL
Basilisk
.......

Movies

Graveyard of fireflies
Paprika (My favorite an assault on the senses, in a good way.)
Origin (Intro is bomb, good if you liked nausicaa.)
Goblin cat (Underrated) Animation is in the style of the Edo period.
Howl's moving castle
Barefoot Gen (WWII)
Perfect Blue
Voices of a Distant star
Princess Mononoke (Tight if you like nature)
......

P.S The plot of Tekkonkinkreet wasn't cutting it for me, saw it blu ray, visually I'd give it a solid 7. I Don't watch Naruto but episode 133-134 are worth watching, visually outstanding.
