Jamaican Landraces

most commercial growers grow mixed strains of all the same crap that has destroyed the landraces world wide these big companys who strain search and gift the growers with thier strains have pointedly tryed to destroy these gene pools once they have their greedy hands on them and you notice they never offer it pure to other breeders

Well said!!!!!!!

My understanding of this subject is that it was brought by the Indians to J.A. hence the word Ganja & also Collie (Kali) that someone else mentioned earlier.

Not sure about when Lambs Bread originated, i thought it was a classic Jamaican strain from way back when but thinking about it I can only really find references in Reggae from 1978 onwards. So now I'm not sure...is there any conclusive evidence that it was made by crossing with Dutch Genetics?

Big up

Island strains

Island strains

I've been down there like 15 times. i always stayed a month at a time. The rastas told me i smoke a terrible amount of herbs mon. Anyway I got to smoke some sativa that takes 9 months to get ripe. I always bought pounds while there to smoke. the grower kicked me a special bud because i'm a great customer and told me its orgin. He said the indians brought it to the island. He told me this is what bob marley smoked. High was trippy and lasted for hours. I also smoked lambsbread which is red bud sativa. I got some of the best high's i ever had on the island.

i've got Jamaican Lambsbread seeds , from a guy in france, who got them from a member of the Vibes Collective.... the story is the guy (member of the vibes collective) knew a very old rasta who had been growing the lambsbread pure for decades.... these seeds are only 1 generation away from the rasta's personal stock.

unfortunately the french guy is a fckin idiot, and sent the seeds with no cushioning, so only a few out of 10 are not crushed.

anyone know anything about the vibes collective? i've seen references all over the net, but it looks like i'm a couple years to late (the site closed a few years back)

i'd love to find the grower and ask him some q's about this strain...

EDIT --- this makes sense to me... almost more so than lambs bread being a specific strain ;
Jamaican Lambsbread is the second harvest of a plant, after the tops have been harvested. This is how it was told to me in 1995 by more than one Jamaican, when I first moved there. By letting the lower buds mature longer they obviously are more resined and heavier in the stone. It was rare because most farmers harvested their whole plants at one time. Of course this technique worked best with sativas.
I do love the shots of these Jamaican strains.

we used to run Jamaicans we got from bagseed down here but couldnt deal with the indecisivneess. They would start flowering than veg out for another 2 months. Never really go into full flower. Than there was a pheno we made seeds with and crossed it to a Sour diesel x DC and sent to a friend. The friend grew them out and crossed them to the Black.

They have a very dominating structure from what i've grown out in the crosses. The only difference is now they actually flower and yield large. They also maintain a lot of the original characteristics. Unfortunately theres no more seeds to work with except the black x jam since we ran the rest of them...

"The history "Lambsbread" dates back to the 60. It comes from the singer Bushman who was raised in a rasta community since childhood. She was already present in the community at its birth. At a concert in Martinique, he brought seeds of this variety in a community equivalent to the French island and has offered to maintain pure asking because it was scarce in Jamaica, even in communities . Then, following a story of friendship, I received seeds, reproduced and distributed..."

Land races are land races.

Land races are land races.

Hello all, some thoughts came to my mind.
Are the jamaican landraces really jamaican?

I dont know when the brittish brought the african slaves to jamaica, but they ended the slavery 1845. And then came the indian immigrants to work on the sugarfields.
The word ganja came into the jamaican vocabulary from the first hindu contractworkers.
And the brittish landowners grew cannabis for the workers, beliving it would make them work harder, and ofcourse the hemp was good for ropemaking and such.

Maybe jamaica had landraces before but isnt it possible that either the african slaves or the indian immigrants brought seeds from their homeland?

And if my theory is correct, then the landraces aint landraces arent they?
But what do i know ;)

Just being a bit curious.

Have a nice day ya'll and im sorry for any incorrect grammer and/or spelling.:tiphat:

after about 10 years of growing in only one region a cannabis plant will evolve it's self to grow best for where it is. so yes, it does become it's own land race.

Love the discussion, but i prefer to vacation there, seek out rastas, and sample the wares they smoke. Makes the vacation a real hoot. Love the red stripe, hummingbirds, and Bob Marley songs from Moma Marleys restaurant in Ochie. We can hear them all day at the beach at Sunset Jamaica Grande. Picked up some all natural smoke on the way up to nine mile from a farmer, loved it. Next trip to Negril we will visit Orange Hill again and stop for some red stripe and good herb. One Love Jamaica, we will return.

Boy, you're making me like call a travel agent and take the next plane to Jamaica. :tiphat:
Seems really like a place to be espcially for landrace stuff.

well.. but what actually ?.. seedsbank destroyed everything.. who's able to find true breed or land race today ?

Blue Mountain is a far dream..
