I've Got Worms ! !

Must admit, fishing is one reason I am getting worm bins set up other than for the castings and organic recycling.

gotta love organics

gotta love organics

Awesome information, Johnny. Unfortunetly, IC doesn't have as much of a 'pure' organic following. Glad to see you're compost bin went well this summer.

It was most amusing to read everyone's niave, gut-reaction advice on this stuff. Especially since it seems that very few of the responses came from experienced composter. It was most entertaining when you actually discovered it's usefulness.

One of the most consistent misconceptions I've found on here is that no one believes that there are cheap, extremely stable organic buffers which can be made from natural household ingredients. Therefore, everyone spends lots of money on PH up and down.

Mainly, as long as you're not feeding the compost anything you shouldn't be (which you aren't), then all that thrives should act in symbiosis with its enviroment.

Sure, all sorts of insects which we don't love could find a spot to lay their eggs, but unless you've got some crazy nematode issues, it most likely won't affect your grow.

Just curious, but what's your PH after 'cure'?

The last batch i did, the PH was about 6.7. I have a cheap PH Probe that seems to be pretty accurate as far as i can tell. I add such a mix of stuff to my compost it would be hard for it to get to far from 7. I'll tell ya for sure in a month or so...

I was chuckling reading some of the posts as well, but its frustrating when you can't find info on something. Shit, even the Three Little Birds didn't know what the hell it was. I ID'd the larvae by pure luck. I'm super stoked about them and they give me even more of a reason to recycle stuff, food items especially. They eat everything so damn fast that nothing gets a chance to start stinking.

I add a Chitin Based root knot nemocide to my compost along with other goodies to attract as many predator nematodes as possible. My state has very sandy soil and nematodes run a muck and wreck havoc.

Hopefully it'll be cured quick. I could use it right now if i wanted to, but in gonna give the eggs a chance to hatch and the rest of the larvae a chance to crawl out. This compost is so much better and richer than any store bought compost i've ever seen. You just cant buy great compost.

Nice to see someone look beyond the ick factor, and get some great benefits from doing it.

They're like my little pets....i always have something to feed them or i find something. I didn't have anything the other day, so i was kinda curious to see what they would eat. I grabbed my 1200 fps pellet gun and went Cuban Tree Frog hunting. I got four big fat guys and threw them in my compost pile. Within fifteen minutes there were larvae crawling in there mouthes and gnawing on them everywhere. I think they were quite happy......but it gave me morbid visions of me dead in my yard with these things crawling out my eyes and ears and eating my brain.

I'm 99% sure they are Soldier Fly Larvae. They are all around my house now....they buzz in your ear and are big and loud. Most people would think it was a wasp, but these don't sting. I've contacted the local extension service for a professional ID.

I'm now 100% sure they are Soldier Fly Larvae. The horticultural agent couldn't identify exactly which Soldier fly it is as there are 245 types in North America, but she said that i have a very useful yet ugly friend in the compost pile. They are the only thing that can take the heat of a compost bin in full sun here is the South. Well see what happens as fall approaches....
