Is this the start of a pistil??

Another update... Haven't given up on this one yet!

I think I see two hairs too! Does each one have smaller bottle brush filaments coming off it like a moth's antenna? Those tiny hairs catch the pollen.

Go to the 99 Cent Store and buy a magnifying glass and the highest magnification pair of reading glasses they have. You'll want to get a quality 10x loupe but the reading glasses are always useful.

I have the same problem as you, really hard to tell the difference early on.
I do have the luck of having feminized seed I watched develop, and have plucked males, seeing the ball on a stick, a whole batch, matter of fact was male. I was not happy.
I agree the females seem more spear shaped. Wait it out, if you are still vegging you have lots of time.
You will see hairs w/o aid after 8-10 weeks. You will see the "calyx" form a ball at the end if its male.
I would get bigger than 10x, I am unsatisfied with a 30x, especially when checking for ripeness.
Take the male outside and let that boy grow. It has thc, let it grow big as possible, I dont imagine it would stink. Then cut it ALL up and make some butter. It'll get the job done

cheaper alternative if you live near a harbor freight. they sell real loupes for less than $5.

rofl @ all the n00bs who said "it's a male, kill it!" hilarity. how the fuck you gonna say it's a male when the preflower isn't even fully formed? lol
I agree, ere on the side of caution, I'd rather spend a couple bucks feeding a male the extra week, than to toss a female.
The noobs should be much slower to call it a male.
I personally wouldn't kill anything till I'm 100%, but that's just my noob opinion.

What kinda magnification they got at the harbor freight? any 60, or so? My 30x works well, but...more magnification makes it easier to see what is going on. I surely wouldn't get anything less than that. Got it off ebay, btw $5 w/ free shipping 30x 21 mm loupe

I'll have to check out the harbor freight loupe.

Are those "420 Scopes" any good? Reviews on Amazon aren't all terrible..

Also, thanks for all the replies. This is my first grow, still trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can!

To be sure you let the preflower turn into a flower. A male preflower will be kind of round or oval. The female will be more like a cone shape and go from wide base to a pointed end with not much sideways bulge. Once they have pistils sticking out it is a female for sure.

I try to sex them before I flower and put the likely females into larger pots but never just throw away male looking plants till they truly show sex for certain. That happens after 12/12 for a week or so.

Top of plant to look for preflowers, top 3 or so nodes.

Best scope I have is a 45x cheapy with LED. Costs less that $5 shipped on ebay. They have a shitload to choose from.

Buddy that is a GREAT tip on that 45x microscope, didn't know i could get a deal like THAT!

To the know it all questioning looking at the stalk, you look 4 junctions up from the primary set of leaves or 4 junctions up a branch from stalk to check for first signs of sex.

I looked at this thread 3 times and I don't see a pistil anywhere. I popped countless males this year and they all looked like that and I didn't miss any boys.

Sounds like its possible you could have killed a lot of females. Many times when pheno hunting ive found what i thought was a male to turn out to be female. You need enough time to see the structure either split open to reveal its pistil or for the ball to swell and become round or sometimes even droop. 2 solid weeks of flowering and its usually an easy thing to detect.

It's an interesting exercise to try and make your predictions as early as you can, go with your very first guess, and label as to sex. Then wait another week or two until it's obvious and see how well you actually did. Most times I'm right but often times surprised.
