Is there such thing as popping seeds too early for outdoors?

I belive you that. and makes sense inside. but outside it's different story. my experience is that the amount of sunlight plant receives is most important thing especially in late flowering. roots need to support the process of course. in short growing season from june to end september, I'm pretty much sure untopped plant would yield better than the method you mentioned.

check out 'the growing large plants oudoors' thread, Tom Hill mentions prunning in one post only and doesn't even touch on topping/yield thing. plant will yield as much as envirourment (sunlight/water/nutrients) and genetics let. I'm not saying training won't increase the yield a bit in some instances but it can also lower it sometimes.
