Synchronize two hard drives?

This is my situation -

I have an external drive and my laptop. There's a folder on both of these that are similar. I add to my laptop and I wanna back up on my external drive. So I end up having my laptop with the most up to date info and my backupdrive that I have to update.

Is there a program that will synchronize a folder on two drives so I don't have to copy the entire folder every time?

I should've noted that you should set this up for a time when your not active on your machine or it most likely will cause problems with the backup.

what you're talking about is raid (redundant array of inexpensive disks) level 1 which is called disk mirroring. It's easy enough to do during install; post install is a bit trickier, but not bad. What OS are you running? Windows XP? Take a look at this:

win xp but one is a laptop drive in my laptop and the other is an external hard drive. all i want is some kind of palmpilot-type synchronization ya know?

half lotus I dont think its a raid option ....is just a sync app thats needed. You could try something like allway sync or second copy. Second copy gives you a trial period after which you can't change your synchronization settings but it still runs what you have already setup.

allway sync I can't vouch for although the name is familiar enough that I think one of the guys I work with uses it.

This method may work. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1646&page=4

I can't see why a usb drive would not be a suitable destination. For the destination path, if e:\foldernameonusbdrive doesn't work you may need to use something like \\mylanipaddress\e$\foldernameonusbdrive

where "e" is the usb's drive letter so change it for what your laptop tells you the usb drive is. the $ just sends you to the root folder on the e drive.

Heh, how can free not be worth it? How can a stable OS not be worth it...

linux is free, unix is not. as far as stability goes, it's all relative to what you want to be stable.

personally, i like to play games, a lot. i spent over 12 hours trying to get a UT2k4 installed under linux and it still wouldnt work. can hardly call that stable, since it wouldnt even run.

stable and secure for servers and networks, sure linux is great. but linux certainly isnt for everyone.

Yes, Linux is lacking in games support mainly because of publishers writing for DirectX vs OpenGL - but then, we're coming along splendidly under Wine, Cedega & Win4Lin

Not being able to play WIndows games on Linux doesnt have much to do with stability though.

Personally, that's why I have consoles :)

I've never tried raid with an external (usb) hard-drive before; but do it pretty much daily @ work (2 internals) and it works well; also I do it mainly on SCO, I'm not much of a windows fan.

As far as the gaming goes; like mark said why not just buy a wii or something?

Re: linux being difficult to make a transition to... not so much. Get ubuntu and read the manual; you'll be well on your way.

that link I sent for the sync program should be what he needs...
