Is Thailand the New Weed Capital of the World?

The only problem with Thailand is the jails are full of prisoners doing very hard time for little drug exposure. You have guys in there doing over 10 years for small amounts of contraband without the hope of being released. Thailand has a hard-on drug policy that sucks and the only reason they legalized weed is that their tourist industry has suffered so badly from the covid pandemic. The country is in bankruptcy compared to what it used to be like before the pandemic. I will stay the f__k away from Thailand because its not worth the trouble.

there is no trouble any longer for toking or growing weed there now
and im not sure the country is bankrupt by any stretch ,
sure some tourist destinations and businesses affiliated with those suffered greatly ,
just like the rest of the worlds tourist destinations ,
but thais are resilient people and they know how to do it hard and how to tighten their belts when the need arises ...
for sure legalizing weed will bring new tourist booms ,
for many its like a dream come true ....
It's all a money thing and since Covid, they went bankrupt and fell apart all of a sudden with no tourists. No one buying their street food or expensive hotels or whores. It looked like a ghost town everywhere. Out of nowhere Boom legal weed. After locking up way over 4,000 people for even small amounts all of a sudden it's Ok. F___ them!!!!
I have dear friends still spending time in their prisons for stupid stuff. I will never go there or recommend anyone to go there. Those freed people that went to their prison are damaged and no one can take that back. My opinion is to stay away from that country.

the war on drugs was not started by thailand ,
they are simply another victim of it,
it was/is well known one has to be careful of drug use there ,
if one intends to imbibe,
their laws are quite tough, but its no secret ...
at least now there is some freedom for cannabis users ,
btw , they did legalize for medicinal use before covid,
so recreational use was the next step ,
im sure the tourism aspect helped though as you say ,
but its a step forward no matter the reasoning behind it ...

Heard they are recovering from covid shutdown. They love rich chinese. They (chinese) dumped billions into a cruise line port and casino in Sihanoukville cambodia, which is not far from Thai border.

I'm toying with the idea of retiring to Thailand at some point, especially if the laws remain somewhat liberal around cannabis. Will wait and see, but even if it was just medical it would suit me.
Beautiful country and climate (for those that love heat like me). I think I could live in some parts of Thailand quite happily, not Bangcock. It's not just the cannabis, but the culture, food, history, temples, people. There's some good Tai Chi schools as well, which I am quite into.

Id argue that Berlin will be the new weed capital and Barcelona if you like the sun. Icmag cup was her in bcn this year and the samples were really amazing, out of this world hash.

What criteria might we use to consider a city or a country (nation-state) a capital of weed? In my view, Barcelona is close, but cannabis is not legal here, but merely not persecuted by authorities (traffickers may find themselves incarcerated by the Policía Nacional).
I have not been to Thailand, but somewhow I am inclined to think it could check more boxes than Barcelona. It has gone through a proper phase of legalization, it has a centuries old cannabis tradition, and it appears to have ablend of both the old and the new. We, tropical people, are friendlier too and, at least I would like to think, most of the time we are so eager to embrace people from completely different cultures that we tend to give without expecting anything in return. We invite people tour homes, we give them free weed and food, but we only ask for respect in return.

I could be missing from a lot of things though so I would only say that in my experience I would not think this city would qualify under my standards as the capital of weed. Under my standards, the place would have to be much more open, be sunnier but also have more rain (like tropical places do), people be friendlier and less judgmental, have a non-transactional vibe to them (non quid pro quos), and have a lot of legal dispensaries and social open-aired events where smoking and comsumption are allowed. Who knows how this place might look like and where it might be.
