I bought a 10000 btu portable from home depot last week. I know how an in wall unit works. Being that a portable unit is discharging air from the room does this air need to be scrubbed? On the back of my unit there is a 4" tube that normally connects to the window to exhaust.
If it has one hose then yes it is. It pulls room air through the compressor to cool it and sends it out that hose with the rest of the heat. Along goes plant aroma too. Return it if you can and get yourself a dual hose portable A/C.
You cannot scrub the output from those portables since the humidity is 100%. Carbon will become soaked and inactive. Best advice is to vent to a place where oder is not a concern or return the unit.
Thats a great point if true and I don't doubt you,are they made to function that way?I always kept my dehumid at 40% RH and figured the exhaust into the attic to be the same, although I havent a clue how they actually function, only to never ever use one single or dual hose with co2!
there has been alot of talk over the years about dual hose portable acs and the consensus seems to be that despite the dual hose, it exhausts 'dirty' air.
maybe, just maybe------you could shoot the wad and buy a carbon filter system, maybe. You will be a lot happier. You can recirculate the air in the room instead of discharging it. I have and do and it works just fine.
Put the AC unit in one room, and the run iso-ducts from the outlet of ac into the grow room. Keep the grow rooms exchange air apart from the room where the AC is, or build a ventilated box to put you unit in and at least cover up the coolers working in-/outtakes with the vented box. the gist on this thread and my own experiences w/ A/cs are just as posted above
1. the single AND dual designs are a security risk due to ODOR dicharge thru the condenser cooling feature ( exhuast hose ) plus these designs also send the evaporator drain onto the condensor coil to evaporate it and carry it out thru the exhaust air stream makin it laden w/ moisture and rendering any kind of carbon srubber useless. an inline UV /ion srubber IE; air tiger ETC. might work on the exhaust hose but risky with the electircs/bulbs in them suckers.
2. my experience with both the single and dual hose portables is that they also DO NOT HOLD UP for "constant use" they are a BAD investment for your cooling buget dollar IMHO!!!
i would advise "split style system" such as a "minisplit" made by folks like "samsung", "LG", "sanyo", "mitsubishi", etc.... these units run from about 600 bpones to about two grand depending on the size and brand choice. Pricey YES indeeed but they are VERY RELIABLE and will last for years and years if properly applied/chosen and installed correctly!!!!
if your budget is limited i would save(plan) for a split design but in the mean time u can use a "window shaker" unit in a box/tub with a dual hose setup.
this config is actually "ODOR PROOF" as long as u keep the "fresh air vent" closed i would imagine some good designs are posted here at ICMAG
dont spend the bucks and have failures like i have exerienced, read and understand this post and learn from my/our mistakes
peace!!
BUZZ!
