Is it possible to run 4 250w bulbs off of a 1000w ballast?

It violates code and should not be done. It might be possible but something tells me you'd probably need 4 ignitors, one for each bulb.

I would not try this, its a bad idea.

Not a very good idea, these are not incandescent bulbs with a stable constant voltage i.e. 120V. Even if it was possible, you'd have to decide whether the bulbs would be wired parallel or in series.

Where I agree its not safe & is defenatly against code ..... it could probably work with the old magnetic ballasts . i wouldn't try it on a digi cuz of the circuitry . but it could work with metal halides cuz they don't need an ignitor to fire the bulbs . just the coil & capacitor . HPS you'd have to put an ignitor before each bulb .
but i'll bet you this would work .

Lumitek even makes a 600 watt hps digital ballst 240 volt , that fires 2 600 watt bulbs at the same time . i've never pulled one apart or claim to know how its built ... but i doubt they have 2 ballasts in 1 enclosure .its probably a higher wattage single ballast with circuit boards for each bulb .
And phantom makes a 4000 watt ballast pack that runs 4 1000 watt bulbs .... but i know thats 4 seperate ballasts cuz you can have 1 fixed while the other 3 still run .

Go for it. Make sure that you mount the ballast near something flammable.

With any luck you could win a Darwin Award, and get published.

Best of luck!

Dan, double ballasts in one housing are pretty common for commercial/industrial fixtures. I would lean toward the double ballast idea largely because of the potential differences and the impact on the circuit from different lamp ages, different manufacturers and lamp variations, whether or not both lamps were present, etc.

Hey, Shithead.

Did you not read the part where I said 'I don't need one built"?

I dont think there would be any real bennefit over just running the 1 k IMO, but i think its sunpulse a has spliter setup that you can run 2 600 bulbs off a magnetic 1k

I'm in agreement with you IL .I personally wouldnt use it .But I'm sure stranger things do exist

Agreed.

Each lamp has a negative resistance characteristic. Which means each lamp needs it's own separate control circuit.

Catastrophic lamp failure is certain otherwise.

see i thought maybe this was possible because i have seen some people run 600w and 400w off a 1000w ballast.. ? together at the same time and everything
