is a 4" Elicent fan big enough to vent a 400w grow tent?

and are carbon filters all they're cracked up to be? My buddy is thinking of starting a grow but needs to be fairly stealthy... Hes wants to set up a 2x4x7 foot grow tent with a 400w- he already has the elicent fan which is really nice- hopefully it will be able to keep the temps reasonable

IMO not using a carbon filter is just asking for trouble, unless you don't care about the smell of growing pot wafting throughout your house and all around the neighbourhood~ That is definately not stealthy ;) ...

If you're hanging around here, you need a scrubber!

Before I came here, my grows were sad and puny (plus the old garage was better vented) so I didn't have to worry. Since coming here, getting decent beans and growing techniques, the stench is through the roof.

thanks for the input guys- my friend is definitly on the right track. He just got a 4x12" carbon scrubber with 4 pounds of carbon- do you guys think this will be good enough?

ive got myself a 4x4x8 grow tent and a ~ 5inch fan and im not quite sure its going to be enough, i believe the lamp pete is using operates at a much lower temp than conventional hps lights?

At any rate i think you are suppose to vent 3 times the amount of your grow space every minute, for me thats around 200cfm and the 5incher i doubt would be good for half of that.

also "whatever" how much airflow would you need for an 8 inch carbon filter for it to be effective?

If your in a high humidity area you will also need an ozone machine. When the humidity starts climbing the smell starts leaking, making the carbon filter less useful.

I know, it happened to me.

No way. That 4lb will barely help you out. Look at how many cfm's it's rated to. You will need at least 20 pounds and 40 pounds to do it right. Plus, if you get a 40 pound filter it will last you at least 4x longer than the little 4lber.

If the problem is fitting it in your space, just run your exhaust out of the space and into the filter. Make sure you pre-filter the air so you don't clog the inside of the carbon filter.

Well, he got the

"Hydrohut ELF" filter

CFM : 150-265 cfm Weight: 5.5 lbs Flange: 4 inches Diameter: 6 inches

20-40 pounds!? well he'll only be running about 150 cfm with the 4" elicent. I see larger carbon filters, but they are intended for HIGH VOLUME of air flow. Are you sure about your reply VerdeHombre?

There's some good info in this thread- i didn't realize that humidity plays such a big role in the effectiveness of carbon- good to know. Thanks guys

daum those things are expensive stop by home depot or lowes and scoop up a Stanley blower for 40 bucks and its got a 3-setting speed control on it.

I'm positive.

Those elf filters will work for a little while(in veg) but once you start getting some potent smells, it won't be able to filter them out especially with the type of odor you will produce with a 400 watt. Also as Trancr said once humidity builds up, it will be even harder to contain odors. One thing you could do is still use it as a pre-filter and still exhaust into a bigger carbon unit. It will also keep the noise of your fan down having it on the intake.

That is not going to help you bro. I skimmped on my first couple harvests and could catcha woft of my trainwreck from more than a coupl houses away from 3 plants under a 400w.....no joke. I threw about 6lbs of carbon on it and it made a dent but I still wanted to throw a dead skunk somwhere on our street....

lets say this about carbon scrubbers

you can smell some veg plants not even a foot high from another level in your house if your moving them around

remeber you will get use to a smell so don't get caught off guard

My scrubber is working like a champ. It's WAAAAAAAY overkill, it's a 6" inline rated at 424cfm(loud) pulling air out of my cabinet and pushing through a big 2 foot tall scrubber with around 15-20 lbs of carbon. Because my 6" was so loud and I didn't need it's full power I bought a speed controller for it and that worked really well for taming the noise. I made the mistake of buying a cheap router speed controller first which made the fan humm something fierce, then I bought a variac speed controller and that killed the humming from the fan. I have it "dialed in" at about 55 volts and that works perfectly for me for odor and noise control. Oh, my cab is only about 11 sq. ft., yeah the 6" was overkill. Just my 2 cents
