a CFL bulb has 2mg of mercury in it.

your standard incandescent light bulb, with no mercury in it, causes a power plant to release 10mg of mercury into the air during its very short lifespan.

you guys should do some research before you start freaking out about everything, you silly pot heads.

This may be the wrong place to type this but what is the difference between a normal bulb, HPS, and a CFL?

Would it actually be better to grow with CFLs?

you just made up some random numbers.. anyways your argument doesnt work because even though incandescents might cause more mercury to be put in the atmosphere, thats not gonna cause brain damage like breaking a cfl in your bedroom will

I did a search after he said that and read somewhere that all lights give off mercury through electricity except CFLs only give it off when you dispose them, so their long life is a good thing.

I must admit (proudly) that I've never broken a single CFL or tube fluorescent bulb, ever. I'm always far beyond careful when handling anything glass.

So I should be worried about the cfl I dropped and broke in my bedroom 2 months ago?

Thats the argument for everything that pollutes.

"Theres already millions of polluting SUVs polluting our air on the roads... what harm can my hummer really do?"

Take out your family going 15 mph while blasting techno and unable to hear the screams...

Chatting on the cell phone helps.

Speaking of SUVs and I dont mean to hijack the thread, but it started out as a vehicle for peoplw anting a sporty look..so mainly for young people. Now theyre mostly used by housewives and corporate dads/grandpas.

So what do young people drive now?

Should us cfl breakers really worry in the long term? I mean WTF should i do about what has been broke right in my bedroom already? This kinda bothers me now.

I don't see how SUVs are sporty in any way lol. All an SUV is good for is snow imo oh yea and for people that like to go on off roading trails, but the SUVs on the roads don't do that.

SUVs are the new minivan, all I ever see are chicks driving them and talking on their cell phones, or it is the sports nut guys that can't drive worth shit.

Funny how the US pays the cheapest for gas yet everyone complains and drives their huge ass cars and wonder why we arn't going to be getting the nice fuel effcient cars from europe.

Young kids just drive civics and scions and whatever. Some are even lucky enough to drive their parents base model bmw...

I googled it, here is the copy and paste:

Actually, your greatest health risk is getting cut from glass shards. Because there is such a small amount of mercury in CFLs, research indicates that there is no immediate health risk to you or your family should the bulb break, especially if cleaned up properly. Please follow the procedure described below.

What should I do if a CFL breaks?

In the unlikely event your bulb breaks, be certain to sweep up - don't vacuum - all of the glass fragments and phosphor powder. Place the broken pieces in a plastic bag and wipe the area with a damp paper towel to pick up any stray shards of glass or fine particles. Put the used towel in the plastic bag as well. Like paint, batteries, thermostats and other hazardous household items, CFLs should be disposed of properly. Check with your municipal waste management program for proper disposal. If none exist, place in regular waste container. It is good practice to always clean up any products containing mercury with care and common sense.
