I cannot sleep in silence! If I don't have a fan running, I have a little air purifier running on low. I can't stress enough how much the gentle humming helps!!

Reading helps me sleep too. TV does the opposite.

its not the silence that gets me but the noises interrupting it.
I sleep like a nervous dog, any noise and I awake.

green squall is right, fans are great for blending sounds into one hum.

Also, I try to be very aware of what sounds I expose myself to in the hour before sleep.

the kind of music they play when you are getting a massage works great for me.

not eating after 6:30 or 7, is important.

our internal clock is set so that our liver is detoxing around 3 - 4 am.
the longer you have gone since your last meal, the less work your liver will be doing at that time and the more likely you will be able to sleep through that period.

I focus my mind on breathing through my nose when I lay down in bed and this usually relaxes me and prevents me from thinking about anything else, and then I seem to just drift away... I disappear completely, and then awake in some bizarre dream hours later...
